Miami Beach has emerged as a major player in the arts and travel industry, recently recognized by USA Today as the nations top iconic waterfront and by CNN.com as one of five spectacular art fair cities in the world, ranking among cities such as Basel, Switzerland and Venice, Italy. We also remain on the forefront of some of the most important issues of our time. We are the first municipality in the nation known to incorporate sea level rise data into our stormwater infrastructure plans in an effort to protect our citys future from climate change impacts. However, to continue to compete on the world stage, it is critical that we progress with technological advances and provide modern amenities that are essential to sustaining our economy, which is based on tourism dollars. This is why we aim to revitalize the Miami Beach Convention Center the areas main economic engine into a vibrant district that will provide year-round activities for the entire community while bringing in at least $150 million more a year in visitor spending. As the single most important investment in the history of Miami Beach and South Florida this is sure to give us the competitive edge we need to evolve as a leader in the business world, as well. We want to ensure that our international city that we call home continues to prosper and make its mark as a one-of-a-kind tropical paradise that offers top-notch amenities and facilities in a laid-back atmosphere. In order to achieve this vision, we need your support. In the pages that follow, you will learn more about the citys sea level rise and convention center renovation plans. We live in interesting and challenging times where our children are faced with many distractions such as social media. The City of Miami Beach, in partnership with Miami Beach public schools, is helping youth focus on whats important by providing them a tool to succeed a planner used to organize and manage time. Each year, students receive a city-sponsored planner and are taught the important skill of time management. Its the best tool for organizing my sons assignments, said Heidi Tandy, Chair person, Committee for Quality Education Chair and parent of Harrison Tandy, 13, Nautilus Middle School student. Planners help parents or guardians express interest in their childs academic progress and support planning and organizational skills related to their studies. Miami Beach public schools place emphasis upon the value of students learning to plan, organize, and manage their time effectively and help them become responsible for their own learning, which is an International Baccalaureate principle, stated Dr. Alice Quarles, lead feeder principal, North Beach Elementary. Time management and related skills are consistently linked to student success in college settings. Every student must learn to plan for success, stated John Donohue, principal Miami Beach Senior High School. Miami Beach youth continue to be a priority for our community, as we strive to enhance learning opportunities.
Aprende a Planificar

If your children love the limelight, want to kick their shyness or just love a goodstory, Miami Beach is where theyll want to be this summer. From the Teen Club to Theatre Camp, Miami Beach is home to multiple summer and year-round youth camps that teach children the fundamentals of acting and choreography through movement, character-building and improvisations.
Were making actors of kids who have never taken acting before and taking care of a lot of social issues from motivation to communication, said Willy Priegues, a recreation supervisor who founded the Miami Beach Teen Club. These are skills that will help them become active members of the community. The Teen Club, which Priegues developed to maintain the communitys at-risk population
in a positive environment, has impacted hundreds of youth since its inception in 2005. Aside from the drama program known as the CMB Players the Teen Club offers its 300 members a score of educational programming and entertainment at city facilities. A lot of these teens come to the program to find a safe haven, said Priegues. The Teen Club acts as a second home to many of our youth.
The Teen Clubs CMB Players practice weekly, performing three free plays a year. Last fall, they performed the Broadwayhit Wicked. This September, Miami Beach residents and visitors are in for a special treat as the CMB Players present the rockin musical Grease. For those who prefer a tale as old as time, the award-winning Miami Childrens Theater will present multiple performances of the classic musical Beauty

and the Beast on August 9 and 10 at The Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road. This is the first time we will be in South Beach, so we wanted to pick a show that people love, said Tim Fath, director of the Miami Childrens Theater. Fath said they strive to keep children actors entertained by
incorporating theme days and karaoke contests, but they also require hard work to master the show in just four weeks. We dont believe the urban legend myth that kids are lazy, Fath said. We think they actually like to work hard and take pride in being part of a big project.

In 2012, when City Commissioners revisited the idea of renovating the Miami Beach Convention Center District, eight prominent developers stepped up for the firstrate opportunity. In November, Miami Beach Commissioners narrowed down the list to two finalists, asking Portman-CMC and South Beach ACE to draft competing plans.
Both teams submitted plans to revitalize the 52-acre site, which incorporates the 22-acre Convention Center, City Hall and nearby offices, area roadways and canals, and The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater. The district would also include the nearby Lincoln Road Mall, Collins Park Cultural Center and the beaches. Most aspects are quite similar in the team designs, which give the area an innovative, contemporary twist on standard convention arenas complete with a headquarter hotel, restaurants, shops, cultural and
community spaces, parks and greenway networks. In the past year alone, there have been numerous public meetings and opportunities for residents to weigh in on the project and examine each teams preliminary design. Miami Beach residents, tourism advocates, business owners, and hotel operators have expressed a deluge of support for the
renovation plans, which would generate a substantial economic impact to the community, and the entire region. The direct economic impact to the community is anywhere between $750 to $850 million during construction alone, Sklar said. Once the convention center is open, were looking at anywhere from $115 to $150 million in annual economic impact. You will have convention center attendees who spend $500 per day on restaurants and retail stores. So businesses in the community will benefit, too.
Dermatology Convention
Proposed funding sources for the new Convention Center project include $55 million from the Miami-Dade County Building Better Communities General Obligation Bonds, the new 1% Miami Beach Resort Tax on hotel room rentals, project generated taxes, and other project revenue sources. Morales has recommended limiting the amount of private leases on public land to 20 percent so an overwhelming majority of the district would remain under public ownership. This is a critical step in our future not just for Miami Beach, but for Miami-Dade County and South Florida, which depends on tourism dollars, Morales said. Thats why its important to us that the community come out to the public meetings and educate themselves on the significance of this project. You can find additional information, including upcoming meetings and design details, on our homepage at www. miamibeachfl.gov.

Yudy Pineiro their bike they need to follow traffic laws. A lot of times motorists get blamed for accidents, but cyclists need to use maximum caution, he added. You cant just run red lights. That creates a dangerous environment for motorists and cyclists. Like vehicles, bicycles operated under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substances can result in serious punishment. Bicyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic and use a lane marked for bicycle use when available. Florida law also requires any person under the age of 16 to wear a helmet. However, while bicyclists often are at fault for disobeying rules, its not always the case. In late May, a bicyclist travelling east on Dade Boulevard was struck from behind by a vehicle and transported to Ryder Trauma Center for treatment. Motorists have to afford cyclists the same rights, Overton said. Floridas Safe Passing Laws require drivers to yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and allow at least three feet clearance when passing a bicyclist on the road. Since most crashes occur at intersections, drivers making right turns should watch out for cyclists to avoid accidents. But left turns can be just as dangerous, which is why drivers should exercise the same caution as they would for any approaching car. In 2010, 618 cyclists were killed and an additional 52,000 were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes, according to the latest available figures from the U.S. Department of Transportations National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of those fatalities, 83 occurred in Florida. Miami Beach records show there was a total of 82 accidents involving bicycles in the past year. Fortunately, none were fatalities. Our goal is to make the city as safe as possible for all of our citizens to move around freely and avoid as many accidents, Overton said.

protect the city from climate change impacts. The City is also collaborating with our regional partners, explained Betsy Wheaton the environmental resources manager, through sharing expertise and resources we will continue to build and strengthen our Citys resilience to climate change. The Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact is an on-going collaborative effort among Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties to foster sustainability and climate resilience at a regional scale. In 2011, the Compact released the Regional Climate Action Plan (RCAP) to create a framework to guide climate adaptation and mitigation policies. This is only the beginning of the conversation, said Saltrick. And we will continue to lead the dialogue for addressing the challenges presented by climate change and sea level rise.

Yudy Pineiro Healthy dunes are a critical component of coastal communities, serving as a habitat for native plants and insects and a feeding ground for migratory birds. They also offer storm protection to upland properties and reduce the impacts of erosion by trapping and stabilizing sand. Knowledge of their importance has become more apparent in recent years, making them a priority for habitat conservation initiatives. Dunes serve as our first line of defense against storm surge acting as a buffer against damage caused by waves, said Betsy Wheaton, environmental manager. They are vital to all the properties along the beach. Without them, they would be more likely to flood.
function of the dune. These habitat restoration efforts are conducted through volunteer events with local non-profits, like the Surfrider Foundation, and through competitive restoration and maintenance contracts. The plants that will be removed through the next restoration contract are detrimental to the system and will overshadow or kill the native plants that are essential to the stability of the dunes, said Dune Management Biologist Rob Barron, who was contracted to oversee the citys dune management plan. Miami Beach will host two more volunteer restoration events and additional educational forums later this year. Footage from the first educational dune workshop is available at www. miamibeachfl.gov/green so interested citizens can learn about the history and value of the Miami Beachs dune and beach systems. These events are funded in part through a grant agreement from the Florida Department of Environmental Protections Florida Coastal Management Program and provided by the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. The beach is the most important asset to the economic well-being and quality of life of the City of Miami Beach, said Miami Beach resident Sidney Goldin, who participated in the June dune restoration event.

he hot summer weather can be a big turn off when it comes to engaging in any physical activity. It takes a lot to motivate yourself to exercise. However, a great way to beat the heat is to indulge in a water aerobics class. Water aerobics classes offer multiple physical and mental health benefits as well as helping you stay active, burn fat and have fun. The class is a combination of rhythmic body movements and dance steps performed in the water. It uses the natural resistance and buoyancy of water against your body to provide a wide variety of conditioning activities, making it less likely to cause injury. Water aerobics exercise is geared to strengthen and tone muscles, build endurance, improve and increase efficiency of the cardiovascular system, increase flexibility and burn calories all while having fun. According to Normandy Isle pool instructor, Yanet Bentez, water aerobics
classes being offered through the Miami Beach Parks and Recreation, boosts peoples health, increases energy, stamina and strength. It is also a refreshing activity that lifts your mood. The goal of water aerobics is to increase your heart rate and breathing slowly to an aerobic level. The water provides you great resistance and extra challenges to your cardiovascular workout said Bentez. One of the most popular water aerobics class right now is Aqua Zumba, offered at Flamingo Pool on Monday nights. Aqua Zumba is a truly enjoyable workout that allows me to de-stress, get in shape, and have fun, stated Dainira Falk, class participant and Miami Beach resident. Exercise has never been so cool! Classes accommodate all fitness levels and are offered weekdays at both
Flamingo and Normandy pools. Not only is it fun, but also free to Miami Beach residents. This summer, trade in your traditional aerobics class for a cool, intense and fun water workout routine.
