The car rounded then bend and turned onto the highway, it would be the last full
turn of the wheel for another thousand miles. The road was almost arrow straight and ran all the way through the desert, a new life awaited them there. Jacob sat at the wheel his elbow resting out the edge of the car his chin supported by an upturned hand, he prepared himself for the long monotonous drive ahead of them. Lilly had offered to drive but knew he'd rather do it himself. He'd send her crazy if he didn't have the road to concentrate on. Even if it was the worlds most boring stretch of tarmac. Lilly lay in the back seat, her head propped up on the passengers side door, her legs bent in the middle keeping her feet inside the car. She rummage through a denim satchel covered in patches and button badges which lay on her stomach. She wanted something specific and as usual couldn't find it in. Jacob glanced over his shoulder at the noise and saw her face scrunched up in concentration and determination as she routed for the missing item. He was about to ask what she was doing when the smile pinged on her face. Lilly scrambled up off of the back see and leant through to the dashboard. Deftly she pulled a cassette from its case covered in doodles and swirls and slammed it into the console. She twisted the volume dial upwards before slumping back down into her seat. She sat up in the rear passenger side seat and watched Jacob out of the corner of her eye, a slight grin forming at the corner of her mouth. Jacob watched her in the rear view wondering what she was up to. He didn't say a word, just waited for the hiss of the tape to be broken up, she was clearly playing something for him. Then it came. A chord rang out from the tired old speakers of his twelve year old sedan, her eyebrows popped up at the exact moment as if she had conducted the notes herself. A beat later the bass kicked in, walking through the car with an upbeat poppy push. He knew what it was, he could never forget this song, it had just started when he laid eyes on her in the bar a year ago. They connected in that moment and were bound together forever more. Lilly sat grooving away in the back seat, exaggerating each movement for comedy effect. He'd seen her dance a hundred different ways but this one was his favourite, that ridiculous dance she did when she was happy and filled with a child like amazement about everything. Jacob's mood lifted instantly he was no longer the tired, drained man who had been up all night moving his girlfriend out of her step fathers house. He was the energised Jacob that used to run through the back woods at the end of his thirteen hour shift just to sneak a kiss though her bedroom window. The Jacob who had
dreamt of leading a band on stage and jamming out timeless songs night after night. He couldn't help but burst into laughter as she waved her whole body in the back seat. She leant forward and threw her arms over his shoulders holding him tight and kissed him on the cheek. "You're mad you know that don't you?" he said turning his head to kiss her. "I know, but so are you." she said smiling to the sound of the Pixies and the
excitement of the unknown. It was just the two of them now, nothing to keep them in that broken down old town. It was a new life for them in a new place. All they kept were the songs.
