Everybody got through the emotional qualification. Finals are ahead
The world championship in Donetsk is a record-holder in the number of the participating countries and the number of athletes representing them. Each single day of the competitions RSC ‘Olimpiyskiy’ is simply flooded with the emotions of all those who love athletics. Here we can see sincerity of friendship, joy of victories and bitterness of disappointment. After all, it is not the victory that matters in the Championship but the opportunity to communicate with young people from all over the world!

In order to deliver the new issue of the newspaper and enrich athletes with the latest information, the ‘The Champion’ reporters went on a mini-tour around the hotels where the athletes are staying.
Long time has gone since somebody welcomed us so heartily as the Canadian national team did. They not just answered to all our questions, they readily invited us to visit their place in hotel ‘Victoria’ and even gave us a kind of a small excursion. Athletes’ coach Carla Nichols made no disguise of her delight at Donetsk. On the way back we dropped in at «Donbass Palace» where «local» athletes were glad to take ‘The Champion’. At the door of hotel «Central» we were surrounded by the curious volunteers: ‘Can we have it, too?’. Duting the first press conference Valentin Laktionov, a deputy mayor of Donetsk emphasised: «We are raising the bar in Donetsk. Prior to that, the majority of athletes stayed in dormitories during all youth championships . We have tried to make it so that almost all the athletes lived in hotels. Seeing that theнs have all conveniences, we have no the slightest doubt left in what was said. Yelizaveta Kruchinina
Media volunteers wangled an invitation
– I did not choose hurdles, it is hurdles that chose me, –
says the Jamaican athlete Yanique Thompson, who broke the youth world record on July, 11. With the result of 12.94 seconds, she was the first to cross the finish line in the 100 metres hurdle final. It should be mentioned that the record in this discipline have been for 14 years, and Yanique has improved the previous result by 14 milliseconds.
Describing the race, Yanique modestly says that it was very difficult, and at the same time, it was extremely important for her: ‘I was just trying to do my best.’ The girl started going in for athletics as a child, and then professionally in high school. By the way, this is not the first successful performance by Yanique. Prior to that, she was noticed in the oldest athletics competitions in the United States - Penn Relay. And even then she did not manage to beat her rivals, many viewers remember her due to that performance. The Jamaican athlete does not speak of her plans for next season: ‘Let the next year come and then we will see’. ‘The Champion’ staff wishes Yanique to break the world record in adult category in the future Olympic Games. Something to be proud of at home
Competitions is a good opportunity to essay one’s powers, as well as an excellent chance to make friends internationally.
It is weird but foreigners are not willing to souvenirs tas remembrance of Donetsk. Instead, they ask enthusiastically strange Donetsk residents to have their pictures taken together as mementos. That is a nice version of a souvenir. Who knows, maybe your photo will go to the place where you will not be able to get by yourself. Yelizaveta Kruchinina
Two legs better than four wheels
Each day of the Championship begins with the soundtrack for the film ‘Taxi’. And here are the athletes on the starting line: gripping is in order, the engine roars, and on turns comes a proper drift.
The only thing that makes the difference between Daniel’s Peugeot and the athletes is the fact that the latter are much faster. As usual, many fans are watching the competitions from the tribunes. Maksim Khorev, a professional Ukrainian racer, is among them. He expresses his emotions freely: ‘The athletes are doing great job. They inspire to change over from four wheels to two legs. Here I see: no traffic jams, no fear to lose a license’. Soon it may happen that all the rally fans will move to RSC ‘Olimpiyskiy’. Natalia Usatenko

It often happens before the competition that some athletes are whispering something quietly, others, vice versa, shout loudly in order to set themselves only for the victory. The athletes were glad to share their secrets of success with ‘The Champion’ reporters and to tell about their prejudices, superstitions and tokens.
Championship in faces
Ariana Washington, the USA: - I have been in athletics since the age of 14. And all this time I only believe in myself and in my abilities. That is why I do not have any superstitions before the race. The fact that I have won this race without any rituals is a vivid example of the importance of intensive training and work at yourself.
Manpreet Grewal, Canada: - I am from a religious family, so I don’t believe in any prejudices. But I know that many athletes have different superstitions. Wild music with crazy beat helped me be in the mood – it is my secret of succes.
Morgan Lake, Great Britain: - I haven’t got any superstitions or prejudices. In order to jump higher, I eat sweets and drink a lot of water before jumping. Moreover, I always try to take care of myself and also analyze my results and performance.
Eduard Plotnikov, Israel: - I am always smiling before the competition, even if I feel sad. It helps get rid of bad thoughts. And then, when crossing the finish line, I shout. You cannot call it a superstition, but it is definitely a ritual.
Dama Garcia, Mexico: - Conversation with my coach is very important for me before a competition. I need to hear that everything will be fine for sure, that my each day is a good chance to have a successful start of my live!
Aleksandr Zholob, Ukraine: - I perform the discipline of race walk. A slice of a mandarin that I usually eat before the competition save me from hunger, tiredness and bad mood
‘On my way to the stadium in a taxi my thoughts were already occupied with the upcoming competitions. On coming here, I felt that my pocket was empty and my phone was not there. I left it in the taxi. The only thing I had was a telephone number of an unknown driver, which I wrote on a piece of paper. I
Lost both the telephone and hope
A solemn moment during the everyday work in the press center. A smile on the face of a man. Firmly grasping the hand, he thanks Svetlana Shevchenko for help.
He saw her at the entrance to RSC ‘ Olimpiyskiy’. The girl’s passionate nature and chocolate skin spoke of her homeland. Presumably, it was the country washed by the Pacific Ocean. When the young man was distracted from the image of a mysterious athlete, he finally noticed the word 'Mexico' on her back. Then came the time for the heats. One hundred meters and one hundred thousand heart beats per minute: his beloved athlete becomes a record-holder. Blinded with triumph, she still notices a gentle look of a timid Scandinavian in the tribune. She is a hot young lady, he is a blue-eyed blonde young man. She drinks coffee with two teaspoons of sugar, he likes it with milk. She competes in 100 meters, he performs in 400 meters. So different they are, both are the winners whose hearts were united by IAAF World Youth Championship in Donetsk. PS: This fairy tale could come true (maybe, it did) because sports success is backed up not only with intensive training but also with love!
