are Muslim) and Thailand (where 99% of the people they teach are Buddhist), are just a couple examples. Saint Mary’s was founded in 1863. They have th celebrated their 150 birthday this past year. The college started on 7 acres in Oakland, which was very anti-Catholic. In 1874, tuition was $125 a year in US Gold Coin, with a $10 entrance fee. Today, tuition alone is $52,000 a year! In 1927, they decided to move the location of the college and were looking into 60 acres in San Leandro with sketches already been drawn up. Brother Joseph found Moraga and wanted to move the college there. The deal he found was 300 acres for $36,000 plus an extra 100 acres! A better deal than San Leandro, because it was a bigger space for less, and had money left over to actually build the school. In 1937, St. Mary’s College went bankrupt. The Bishop at the time sent some financial officers to the public auction to buy the college, which they succeeded for $750,000! The Bishop then gave the school back to the Brothers and told them to pay him back. And they did so, selling wine and brandy like crazy! For those of you wondering, the new construction happening towards the front of the school is actually an expansion of the parking lot. We presented Brother Dominic with our $3,000 check to the Brother Albert Rahill Scholarship!

OMPA!!
OMPA is an important fundraiser for our Club not only financially, but it makes us visible to the community on a larger scale. Things may be slightly different this year, so we encourage you to attend the final details meeting tomorrow night Wednesday, July 24, 5:30pm @ Holy Trinity. Frank has been working hard in banding us all together, so let’s Engage in our Rotary Club so we may Change Lives!! UPDATE:

If you have a large ice chest you are willing to let us borrow for the event, please bring it to a meeting or make arrangements with Frank!

Moraga Rotary needs your help! With the loss of our booth at the LMYA soccer signups this year, the competition of another food vender at OMPA, and frugal competition at our EWaste fundraisers, our funds may be slightly tighter than normal. It may be a time for a change! If anyone has any fundraising ideas, please share! We are not looking for anything too extravagant like Nite at the Races or OMPA, but maybe a couple of events throughout the year to help us maintain the things we do for the community and the world!
