In Sri Dattapuran there is a reference to a pious couple Vishnu Sharma and Susheela who were ardent devotees of Lord Dattatreya. When the Lord appeared before the husband (courtesy a grateful demon) and asked for a boon, he made an innocent request, i.e., to partake food (as a Bhokta) in his father’s annual ceremony, next day. The Lord readily accepted the invitation and graciously enjoyed the lunch next day in the company of Sun and Fire gods. Pleased with Vishnu Sharma’s devotion, the Lord and the two other gods showered many boons and gave spiritual powers on him. The pious Brahmin used them to provide succour to many people in and around his village. The same couple was reborn as Appalaraja Sharma and Sumathi Maharani and lived in Sree Peethikapuram (Pithapuram nearKakinada) during the Fourteenth century. Pithapuram is known as Padagaya and has an ancient temple for Kukkuteswara Swami. Inside the temple there is an enclosed place for Swayambhu Dattatreya’s idol, which is worshipped by many devotees even today. Appalaraja Sharma had a small idol of Kalagni Shaman Datta at home for regular worship and used toconverse with the diety. His parent’s-in-law viz Malladi Bapanavadhani and Rajamamba also lived in Pithapuram, so are the senior’s friends Narasimha Verma and Venkatappaiah Sreshti. The place was a stronghold of Brahmin community who were well versed in Vedas and other Shastras. The couple had two sons first, viz Sridhara Raja Sharma (blind) and Rama Raja Sharma (lame). They were unhappy but continued to lead a pure life. On one Mahalaya Amavasya (New moon day of Ashwin month) Appalaraja Sharma was performing special ceremony for his ancestors (shraadh) when a hermit came to their home at noon and sought alms. (It is said that Lord Dattatreya seeks Biksha from His devotees at noon incognito to test their sincerity). Unmindful that the invited Brahmins did not partake lunch, Sumathi offered food to the stranger. Immediately the hermit took His real form as Dattatreya and said ‘Mother! You have fed me Me before Brahmins, please ask for a boon.’ She replied that ‘since You addressed me as mother, let that word mother turn into a reality. Lord Datta consented for the same and disappeared. When
