NFFO Fishermen’s Information Mapping project

Fishery Data and Information Consent Form
Aim & Objectives of project
The project is a fishing industry led initiative which sets out a proactive and ground-breaking approach to collect, record and display the spatial extent of fishermen’s activities. This is being carried out so that the fishing industry can engage fully in marine spatial planning by having a detailed evidence base to support claims of areas fished. The data when mapped will highlight areas of importance to the fishing industry and will be helpful not just in the context of planning current and future marine renewables, underwater cabling but also in the planning of marine conservation zones. Built on a clear understanding of confidence, trust and confidentiality the fishing industry will work in close partnership with Crown Estate, and DECC for the benefit of both sectors. The project will build a foundation for mutual trust and respect between two potentially conflicting industries.

Data being collected
The project seeks to build three data layers from different types of data, these are as follows: i. 2-hourly VMS data held by National Administrations for over 15m vessels ii. 10-minute VMS data generated by volunteer sample of under 15m vessels iii. Electronic fish plotter data After collection each data-set is anonymised and converted for use on the Crown Estate’s MaRS system – the leading marine spatial planning database in the UK.

Project benefits
   To evidence fishermen’s usage of the seabed within UK territorial waters To enable windfarm and other renewable developers to give due consideration to the fishing industry's usage of their zone to help in the planning of projects so coexistence can take place To enable industry leaders to defend fishing grounds in the MCZ/MPA process To be used in support possible future mitigation development

Our commitment to you:
a) Your data will only be used only together with other’s data so that it is does not identify you or your individual fishing patterns. b) Fishing industry leaders will only use this data in representing your interests and use of the data will only be permitted by approval of an industry committee. c) In preparing evidence such as fishing activity charts and representing fishing industry interests it will sometimes be necessary to publish this publically in an aggregated form. The Committee will make decisions with your interest in mind but it will not have control over how that evidence may be subsequently interpreted by others. The lack of evidence of fishing activity which this project seeks to address can be interpreted by others in ways that may or may not be in your interest. d) We will not pass your data on to MCZ / MPA project groups or environmental NGOs
