Charlotte
Tracing the origins of the land now called Charlotte is like following an old game trail through ancient forest. The tracks, crushed turf and broken twigs are gone but an impression on the forest itself has been left. A shallow furor, patches of exposed mud and a narrow line cut through the undergrowth visible only when directly on the trail then vanishing in the seeming chaos a pace to the left or right. What is known is Charlotte was part of the hunting grounds of the Seneca Nation. The marsh and lowland woods near the great lake of Ontario provided game in abundance and fish populated the river and the fresh waters of what is but a part of the vast inland sea of the Great Lakes. Perhaps the first European to see the area was interpretor and explorer tienne Brl who mapped the Genesse River valley during his years spent living among the native peoples at the behest of renowned explorer and benefactor Samuel de Chmplain. Brl achieved notoriety after betraying Champlain and France to the English. The long time frontiersman met his death at the hands of his own adopted Huron people in 1643. Charlottes future didnt rest in the hands of the French and as England slowly conquered New France a nascent United States started to fill the space formally occupied by purely European powers. In 1788, a mere year after the signing of the Constitution, the Mill Yard Tract was created. This parcel was purchased from the Senecas by New England businessmen Oliver Phelps and Nathanial Gorham. The lake shore portion of the parcel would grow into Charlotte. The beginning of the village was with a single hut. This modest structure was built on the west bank of the river by William Hincher and his son who were later joined by his wife and seven daughters. The village proper was laid out in 1792 by Colonel Robert Troup who created single acre lots of the now defunct Mill Yard Tract. Once divided the whole area was named Charlotteburgh after his daughter. These settlements preceded the founding of Rochester. The early 1800s saw the growth of Charlotte as a port town in the vibrant trade network spreading through the Great Lakes. Frontier merchant George Clinton Latta ran a fleet of sleek squared sailed schooners from Charlotte. This trade was seriously disrupted when war broke out in 1812. The threat of English naval raids coming from Canada was so severe shipping had to be diverted miles inland to Carthage Landing (near the Veterans Memorial Bridge). Several encounters occurred at or near Charlotte with Royal Navy forces actually landing in June 1813 to take supplies from the local people. Later efforts were met first by the ships under Commodore Issac Chauncey and later the canons of local militia units. The end of the war lead to a true flowering of the lake trade and in 1820 no less than 316 ships visited the port. To accommodate the increased shipping the first light house for the port was built in 1821. However, the lake trade couldnt compete with the Erie Canal and later railroad lines. The rebound and reinvention of Charlotte came after the Civil War. The schooners and heavy limbed sailors and dock workers of the previous era gave way vacationers and excursion steamers as port transitioned into a summer resort. Leaving behind the summer heat to enjoy the cool lake air people flocked to the small port and the Genesee Yacht Club was established in 1874. Over the years Charlotte has embraced its new role offering a sandy beach front and bustling park along with several eateries near the lake. Rochesterians will find local favorites like Italian food from Mr Dominics On the Lake. Cheeburger Cheeburgers famed one pound burger beckons along with sushi from California Rollin II. Savory steaks, BBQ and seafood can be found at LDR Char Pit, Nolas BBQ and Pelicans Nest Restaurant respectively. Finally, there is the Charlotte-Genesse Lighthouse. Dating from 1822 the 40 foot octagonal tower now stands as the last original lighthouse on Lake Ontario. The site now houses a museum and offers a commanding view of the Port of Rochester. The lighthouse serves as a direct link to Charlottes past while offering an enviable view of its present.

Owner Lee Selover has been operating Windjammers since he was 24 years old and he has kept up his neighborly sense of belonging in his restaurant ever since. Windjammers was changed from a standard bar into a restaurant where people can come and know that they are welcome. Thirty five years in business shows the power of his determination in making his dream real. Selover concentrates on the needs and wants of his customers. If they havent had something on his menu then he comes over to them so that he can make sure that they receive samples of the foods to taste. Selovers need is to get out and build relationships with his customers so that he can keep the atmosphere of Windjammers jammin daily with a full blast of energy beyond what is possible at other bar and grills.

LDR CHAR PIT

I grew up in Western New York just south of Rochester in the village of Geneseo. The big summer outing at least once a week was a trip to the local hamburger stand. The whole family would pile into the car and off we would go to our hamburger joint. These summer trips created endless summer memories filled with laughter, familiar friends and faces, and of course good eats. Over the years many of these places have disappeared, but fortunately today there are still a few places around. One recent hot day last summer, my family & I decided to head up to Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte for some swimming. It would be an understatement to say we were delighted to find LDR Char Pit in Charlotte. This is a neighborhood gem, a place for visiting old friends, exchange some neighborhood gossip and of course to enjoy some delicious summer eats.

A taste from Above!

Original owner Russ and his brother opened the LDR Char Pit in 1945 after they returned home from World II. Since then it has been a local favorite gathering place to enjoy a wide variety of food, and a place for friends and family to come together. Current owners Lou and Steve plan to keep the classic menu and add some new items while expanding the busy summer hours. The LDR Char Pit is a classic all-American diner offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A true jewel in the Rochester area for its wonderful service, varied menu, great values, down home atmosphere and more. Dont miss a visit to LDR Char Pit. And of course, dont forget to try their steak sandwich!

A taste of Italy at

Mr. Dominics at the Lake

Having traveled extensively throughout Italy, living there for months at a time, I will never forget the gracious hospitable people I met along the way. Many of whom Im still in touch with to this day. They introduced me to true Italian food. Always pointing me in the right direction when I was seeking an off the beaten path place to relax and have dinner. I found Italian food to be extremely seductive and it was these out of the way treasures, trattorias and pizzerias known mainly to the locals, which became the mainstays of my daily feasts. Fortunately in my hometown of Rochester, NY, I have Mr. Dominics at the Lake which provides sumptuousmouth watering, authentic Italian food. Mr. Dominics has served the Rochester area for over 35 years with homemade sauces, hand crafted pastas, veal dishes and Italian specialties all made to order. Mr. Dominics always uses the freshest ingredients with their original family recipes passed down through many generations. Most of their cooks have been with them sinced they first opened. Mr. Dominics also has a full catering menu as well. If youre looking for a taste of Italy in Rochester New York then stop at Mr. Dominics. Youll be glad you did!

Nicole and I missed our families, because we were both born and raised here, but we also missed the town itself the feeling of space, the ease of getting around and the affordable housing. Before finding her stores current home and after finishing advanced Reiki training, Jaci started with flea markets and festivals on weekends. The impetus for establishing the physical store came with a realization. I realized how well crystals and gemstones worked for healing. I just became very passionate about it...and [the Dove Gift Store] grew from there. The store offers all manner of products. Essential oils, incense and candles complement the selection crystals, angel figurines and gemstones. The Dove Gift Shop also has books to help customers learn how it all comes together. Jaci described the goal as ...specializing in self-healing of the physical, mental and spiritual and that is what we try to offer here in services and things people can purchase. Reiki classes and healing sessions are regular events. Other classes are available in such diverse subjects as astrology, palmistry and numerology, healing with colors, essential oils and the use of gem stones and crystals. Class schedules change regularly so readers should check the website or call ahead for the most up to date offerings. Message night and message circles happen several times a month. This diversity of products and learned opportunities fits with the Jacis open outlook, We honor all different paths that people are on. We try to help them with whatever they are looking for. We truly believe in trying to help people find there way.

The Purple Door

In the late 1990s Connie Wake was looking for metaphysical and holistic medicine. She started out on a different path back in the 90s and ended up with holistic living! Wake states that,I thoroughly enjoy my journey to Mind+Body+Spirit and opened The Purple Door in 2007 to provide a place for folks to do the same. I am joined by many wonderful and supporting family members, friends and patrons. I am enjoying a personal transformation, a business transformation and excitedly a community transformation as more and more people are looking for what Oprah refers to as the highest fullest expression of your Self! There are a variety of classes that are offered that you may choose from. Along with building a strong presence online with their various meetup groups on spiritual matters Purple Door also offers books and classes weekly throughout the year through the Higher Self Services and Learning Center . The Purple Door Soul Source sees itself as a part of the community that is dedicated to expanding awareness of the authentic self, the high self, and through an active relationship of mind, body, and spirit. Its classes in energy wellness contribute largely to this end and also its forums, services, and products. Its main message is to live our best self, create our day, and have great fun doing it!

Charlene Hacker, owner of Psychics Thyme, originally broke away from the Christian church back in the 1980s and became a spiritualist. She also became the assistant to the Pastor of the Plymouth Spiritualist Church. Shortly after she joined a coven where she became a witch yet could not find any supplies for their ceremonies or rituals. Her training in Wicca began in 1993. She was a student of High Priestess Deb Guite and belonged to her coven, The Sisters of the Willow Moon. Two years later Charlene received her High Priestess title and broke off to start the Lodge of Isis. Charlenes own group has developed more than three spiritual groups. A high Priestess of The Sisters of the Willow Moon coven and previous employee at Aquagenesis in Rochester knew of an empty building to start their business in which was on Lyell Avenue. The business was started on April 1st, 1996 with a loan for $2,000 from her father and marketing materials were donated from family members to help get the business a jump start. Aside from being the host of 30 plus psychic fairs at R.I.T., Pyschics Thyme sells: incense, candles, loose herbs, lamps, tarot cards, occult books, and crystals. Classes are held each month ranging from beginner tarot to psychic medium classes. Psychics Thyme really took off based on the fact that they were to take over another New Age shops place called New Voyage back in 1997 at the biggest Psychic Fair in Rochester. As a result, Psychics Thyme doubled its meager stock, and did very well at the fair by increasing its sales and community exposure exponentially!

Hilton Family Pharmacy

Hilton is like many villages in Western New York. A quiet place nestled in the farm lands near the Great Lake Ontario. Visitors come for the Apple Fest in October or to visit family and friends. What they dont see is a whole community of people living their lives and raising families. Peter Miles decided that supporting Hilton in the capacity as a pharmacist was the best way to spend his life. Mr. Miles worked for Wegmans for thirteen years but knew it wasnt his first, best purpose. For that he took inspiration from his father. James Miles founded Rosencrance Pharmacy Incorporated in 1937. With such a long track record it is no surprise Peter Miles had such determination to start his own business. I always felt independent pharmacy was where I would end up. Mr. Miles achieved that goal when he opened the Hilton Family Pharmacy in 2007 at 32 Main Street in the heart of Hilton. As an extension of Rosencrance Pharmacy Inc he has built a steady customer base and continues to expand the services and products on offer. Like many businesses in smaller communities the Hilton Family Pharmacy offers more than just a convenient place to fill prescriptions. While providing the services of a full service pharmacy Mr. Miles company also offers a variety of other products. Shelves are stocked with Willow Tree Figurines and Yankee Candles brand products. Embellish Your Story magnetic scrap booking sets share space with Disney Traditions from Jim Shore. Designer Greeting cards, wrapping paper and balloons are always half price. Finally the most striking addition is the Coffee Corner. Offering a host of baked goods and drinks made with Finger Lakes Coffee Roaster beans. Even with everything else on offer Mr. Miles takes the greatest pride in the service his customers enjoy daily. Mr. Miles put it best when he said, We dont have answering machines. We like to talk to people. So if anyone is looking for Jobst compression stockings, sports braces, a prescription, or just wants a cookie and hot cup of coffee Peter Miles assures them, You wont get lost in the system here. Every customer is important. The Hilton Family Pharmacy has a website at www. hiltonfamilypharmacy.com with store hours, phone number and address.

Charlotte and Greater Rochester Summer 2013

Charlotte and Greater Rochester Summer 2013

It all started when Rocco Viele took a business trip, I was in San Diego at a pool and spa show in 1982 and I saw a suntan bed and thought this could be kind of cool. Its a brand new industry. I put one in my show room to sell. That showroom was part of a remodeling business that already provided hot tubs and spas. It was a combination showroom and tanning business. In 1984 the first Golden Tan was established on East Ridge Road and would go on to become one of the oldest tanning salons in the United States. Over the years the chain grew to six locations with the most recent opening on Lyle Ave in Gates. Conveniently located across from Wegmans Rocco is excited about the new location with is combination of convenience and shopping opportunities that is sure to please regular customers while introducing many more to tanning.

Sun Tan City

national chain of suntan salons in the country and they are definitely the smartest. I was following them for five years. Im a franchisee of Suntan City. Theyre in six different states. Suntan City still offers the same tanning beds and sunless tanning products but now with greater customer support due to being part of a bigger company. Of particular note are the suntan and sunless tanning products produced by Australian Gold and Swedish Beauty produced by New Sunshine. A host of exotic ingredients produce a product both succulent and smooth. Despite the changes over the years Mr. Viele still feels a strong connection to the Rochester community. He prefers to express this through the support of charities going so far as to say, We donate to every cause. When people call me up and say, Would you be willing to donate to our cause? we have one answer. Always yes. We never say no to any cause and thats important. Our customers support us and we support their causes. Thats what life is all about. In closing Mr. Viele said, If you chose to get a little bit of sunshine. Then Suntan City would be a good choice to tan sensibly and moderately. We ask that you consider us your favorite place to tan.

The biggest change has been the transition from the familiar Golden Tans to Suntan City. It was not a decision Mr. Viele made lightly, That was the most difficult decision I ever had to make. Locally its very hard decision to understand because I owned the market locally but what the market doesnt understand is the big players are starting to come into our market. So I chose to get on the bandwagon with the best player. Suntan City is, I believe, the fastest growing

The most important factor of Alpco Recycling is caring about the environment, the Earth, and other community members that it serves equitably. It does the things that people do not want to do or the difficult tasks of every day living like recycling and waste management. Finding the best solutions is Alpcos most effective business. This acts on the conservation of energy in the most sustainable ways. Alpco prides itself on acting responsibly for the environment and encourages its customers to think of how to be feasible in their actions because disposing of their garbage in other ways may use more energy and not be necessary for sustainable purposes. Alpco Recycling was started by Al Plumb and his wife Janelle Plumb in 1962 who were in the sand and gravel business and then in 1965 began doing business with sanitary land fills. At the same time they were still in the sand and gravel business. They turned dumps into sanitary fills and in 1975 started dealing with larger land fills and started recycling materials out of the land fills and processing cardboard and scrap metals. In 1979 Alpco sold their land fill to build a recycling plant. In 1989 Plumb took over Alpco and made into Alpco Recycling Incorporated in September 1989 complete recycling which included: ferrous metals, plastics, papers, non ferrous metals, construction, trucking, and demolition.

Alpco Recycling

Recycling has grown into the dominant part of Alpcos now does and currently has many more employees. Transportation is operated by Alpcos truck fleet of sanitary contractors that do waste management work for both residential and commercial concerns. There are now 100 employees compared to the three employees that it started with. They have more processed equipment and are considered a dealer packer in most cases because they do not make a product. Plumb states that Alpco, decify and package stuff up for transportation to mills and people that are making a product. We feel our role is to advocate, reuse, recycle, repackage, and give that process to others. Alpco strives to expand and grow in doing it what does best in recycling and proper waste removal. They give answers to peoples questions and concerns. Recycling is only one portion of the conservation of energy for mankind and a lot of times people look at recycling as the ultimate goal. The goal is the conservation of energy and recycling is a part of that process. Be responsible with your waste management and make sure that you recycle as efficiently as you can and Alpco will do the rest.

Cams Pizzeria
Cams Pizzeria started July 2nd, of 1980 in Geneva New York. Rita Halpin, began working at Cams Pizzeria in 1980 as its first employee, just after graduating from the University of Geneseo. Although she has been there ever since, as of 1987, Rita took over the business and became the owner. Halpin considers the Geneva Cams to be the flag ship of the Cams franchise because of the duration All of the recipes are the same yet the main difference is that the Cams that Halpin owns bakes all of its own cakes, cookies from molasses, to oatmeal, and cut out cookies. Cams has been in operation for 33 years and has been consistent with its approach. Its the original New York style pizza and is locally owned. The original employees of the company all grew up in the Rochester area and has a loyal base of customers that is very diverse. Cams prides itself on being one the signature anchor stores in downtown Rochester. In Geneva Hobart Williams Smith 1980 graduates all want to come back to Cams because they lived on it when they were in school. Halpin says that its always nice to see the old employees and students come back with the surprise to see the original founders still making pizzas. Cams is accommodating to the needs of its customers and does not focus on catering. Over the last year Cams has started making pasta dinners such as: homemade macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and meat balls, and stuffed shells. The business is consistently opening up new stores around the state. Generations of customers have been coming to Cams since the beginning. This is a generational food whereas the original employees state it is love at first slice! People from kids to those who have grown up, gotten married and have their own kids all have eaten at Cams. Fundraisers for kids has been big like doing them for the Boys and Girls Club, Public schools, athletes, little leagues, and more because of the benefit to the community. Halpin states, we think its a kids food, and as the kid grow older they pass it on to their kids. It just continues generation after generation. A Gust of Sun Winery

Want to find a fantastic and unique winery? Check out A gust of Sun Winery and Vineyard at 4515 Baer Rd., Ransomville, N.Y. 14131. These guys are awesome. They seem to have it all. This winery has been open since Aug., 2011 (almost 16 months). Shane and Erik Gustafson met each other at Purdue University in Indiana and found that they both had a high appreciation for wine. They both took wine appreciation courses and eventually became certified through U.C. Davis. They then started producing wine in an underground facility from their home. In 2008, the couple relocated to Iowa, but did not like the particular types of grapes that this environment produced. So given that Erick was a New York native from the Rochester area, they decided to once again relocate, but this time to Western N.Y., specifically Niagara County. They were most impressed with The Niagara Wine Trail which promoted an area with exceptional potential yet not as fully developed as the Finger Lakes region. The Niagara County area was under development and the Gustafsons felt this was an up and coming area. They felt that they had found the perfect location for them. And so their dream started to turn into a reality. There is now an upstairs lounge complete with a service bar with seating, two large living room style seating areas, two barrel tables with bar stools, many books, periodicals, board games, a computer, projector, large screen, Blue Ray player, stereo, and more! This lounge is open to the public during most business hours, but is large enough to be leased for many different kinds of private functions. A Gust of Sun is a relatively new winery in Niagara County, just 30 miles from Buffalo and 20 miles from Niagara Falls. This winery and vineyard is already producing a fine line of wines. Check out the website http://www.agustofsun.com or call for further details on location, announcements, specials, wine and chocolate pairings in the famous and much praised Tastings Plus. The Gustafsons have also become part philanthropists with some of the proceeds from their two top selling diamond wines going to help support Diamonds in the Ruff, a local animal rescue charity. They seem to do it all.
