12:1–16 While chap.

11 illustrates Moses’ frustration with the people and his request to share leadership, chap. 12 focuses on his unique authority. In chap. 12, Moses’ brother and sister—Aaron and Miriam—challenge Moses’ authority in the wake of the episode of Eldad and Medad (11:26–29). Moses is shown to be God’s prophet par excellence. 12:14 had surely spit in her face In biblical times, spitting was viewed as an act of contempt (see Deut 25:9; Isa 50:6). 13:1–24 Chapter 13 records the second of the two greatest sins during Israel’s journey to the promised land (the first being the golden calf incident in Exod 32). When the spies (v. 2) return from scoping out the land, they express fear of certain occupants (see vv. 32–33). This fear and the unbelief it conjures sends Israel into a 38-year period of wandering aimlessly in the wilderness until the faithless generation dies off. The juxtaposition of this chapter with chap. 12 indicates that resistance to God’s authority (and so, Moses’) was not fully resolved. The peo ple may have resented what happened to Miriam and Aaron; alternatively, they may have been emboldened to doubt Moses. Ultimately, the outcome is tragic. Miriam, sister to Aaron and Moses, is also an important leader within Israel. She is remembered alongside Moses and Aaron in Mic. 6:4 as part of the leadership God sent to bring Israel out of Egypt. Traditionally she is identified as the sister of Moses who watched over Moses's papyrus basket as it is rescued by Pharaoh's daughter. Then in an act of great bravery, Miriam convinces her to use Moses's mother as a nurse for Moses (Exod. 2:5-9). She is also remembered as a prophet and a musician, singing the song of victory after Israel crosses the Red Sea (15:20-21). Her death is recorded in Num. 20:1. Remarkably for a patriarchal society, her leadership and importance are clearly marked, suggesting her exceptional character and activity. Her recognition is also part of the great attention paid to women and their roles in Numbers, as seen in the later laws concerning women (esp. 27:1-11; 36:1-12).
