Introduction

Online Partial Discharge (PD) Measurement is one of the Diagnostic Tests for finding the defects in the Cable System which comprises of Cable, Joints and Terminations. This test is non-intrusive and does not require any shutdown of the Cable System to perform the test. With this test the defects in the insulation of the cable, joints and Termination could be found out provided, provided noise rejection technique is adopted. AYT will uses the Techimp, Italy instrument which is known for its effectiveness for online and offline PD measurement even in noisy environment. This test is safe to perform, however all the safety measures need to be taken in line with the plant requirement where test is being performed in addition to the safety step suggested below.

2. Objective
To perform Online Partial Discharge Measurement on the 400 KV Cable System including Cable, Joints and Terminations.

3. Testing Procedure:
In order to ensure the quality of the measurement and to make the quality decision, AYT might use one and/or two equipment mainly PDCHECK, Techimp or MPD540, Omicron, Austria. Therefore, the Method of measurement of

both the equipment is given. 3.1 Procedure of testing by using PD CHECK: The process of PD Measurement using PDCHECK is elaborated in the Fig.1. Then follow the step wise instruction given below for both.
Online Partial Discharge (PD) Measurement of Terminations: SAFETY FIRST. Perform the Job Risk Assessment with the Plant owners. Adhere to the Safety norms and steps defined here below. The Equipment PDCHECK operates on Battery! The LAPTOP is needed to make the PD Measurement. Hence, it is required to make it sure that these equipment are safe to work in the area. 1. Connect the Ground lead to the equipment. 2. Install the HFCT in the ground lead of the Cable in each phase or directly on the cable as shown on FIG 2. Check the direction of the CT. 3. Install the LFCT for Synchronization either on the ground wire or one of the phases. 4. Establish the communication between the Measuring unit (PDCHECK) and the LAPTOP through FOC. Make it sure that the PDCHECK is grounded.

Create the folder and file. Check whether the System is synchronized. Start collection of data. Look into pattern. Ensure by applying the hard and software noise rejection technique and try to obtain the maximum sensitivity. 9. Ensure to take the data from each cable. Acquire the waveform also. Online PD Measurement on Joints: SAFETY FIRST. 1. Ground the measuring PD CHECK. 2. Install the HFCT in the ground lead of the Cable in each phase. Check the direction of the CT as shown in the Figure 3. 3. Install the LFCT for Synchronization either on the ground wire or one of the phases. 4. Establish the communication between the Measuring unit (PDCHECK) and the LAPTOP through FOC. Make it sure that the PDCHECK is grounded. 5. Create the folder and file. 6. Check the System is synchronized. 7. Start collection of data. Look into pattern. 8. Ensure by applying the hard and software noise rejection technique and try to obtain the maximum sensitivity. 9. Ensure to take the data from each cable. Acquire the wave form also.

3.2 PD testing by using OMICRON MPD 540:

INTRODUCTION: The MPD Partial Discharge Analysis System is an

acquisition and analysis toolkit for detecting, recording, and analyzing partial discharge events in many applications. It is controlled by the integrated mtronix/Omicron software featuring real-time visualization and analysis options of PD detection and system parameters

4.1.1PREPARATION
Preparation:

The prior information about the test object is necessary to select the right measurement equipment (calibrator, quadripole/measuring impedance, fiber optical cable length). The system will be set up the following way: 1. Connect the fiber optics controller to the Notebook Computer using a standard USB cable (USB 2.0).

This MPD 600 should be included in the Tools list

2. Connect the MPD 600 Acquisition unit to the fiber optics controller using fiber optical cables. Observe that TX (transmit) is always connected to RX (receive) and vice versa). 3. Connect the power supply (or battery) to the MPD 600 Acquisition unit. The red LED starts flashing indicating that the acquisition unit is ready for Operation. 4. Connect the BNC cable coming out of the HFCT as shown in Fig 5 to Measuring Unit MPD540. 5. Connect the Notebook PCs power supply and switch it on.
Perform test:

1. Select an appropriate measurement frequency and bandwidth (in the range of the applicable measurement standard). This is to optimize the signal to noise ratio and to reduce external interferences. 2. In case of high external disturbances a gaiting channel with antenna can be connected to the measuring system, if possible. It is recommended to measure the PD in Wide Band.
Reporting/assessment

The reporting will be done based on the stored data. This can be done either with the exported graphics or with the stored data stream.
