1 Provides adequate care to mothers during the childbearing period: antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum stages. 1.2 Attends to normal deliveries ensuring safety and comfort for both mother and baby. 1.3 Provides adequate care to a normal child during the pre-natal, intra-natal, neonatal and infant stages. 1.4 Provides family planning services. 1.5 Provides primary health care to individuals and families in the community. 1.6 Gives health teachings to mothers on: nutrition, hygiene, health promotive practices, disease prevention, infant care and feeding. 1.7 Gives appropriate first aid measures to clients as needed. 1.8 Implements, health programs of the Department of Health following proper protocol. 1.9 Makes timely and appropriate referrals. 2.1 Manages a barangay health station. 2.2 Cooperates with other health, professionals in the provision of health services to clients. 2.3 Supervises barangay health workers in the implementation of the maternal-child health programs of the Department of Health. 2.4 Performs professional responsibilities based on acceptable standards. 2.5 Supervises the mother in providing care to herself and her infant care. 2.6 Participates in activities directed towards 2.6.1 Improvement of the self 2.6.2 Improvement of the profession.

COMPETENCIES OF THE GRADUATE MIDWIFE DERIVED FROM PROFESSIONAL FUNCTIONS AND ROLES ANTEPARTUM 1. Assesses accurately maternal condition during pregnancy. 1.1 Performs general physical examination. 1.2 Determines EDC and AOG. 1.3 Obtains pertinent history. 1.4 Performs Leopolds- maneuver. 1.5 Obtains vital signs and fetal heart rate. 1.6 Performs breast examination. 1.7 Performs simple laboratory examination. 1.7.1 hemoglobin 1.7.2 urine sugar 1.7.3 urine albumin 2. Detects deviations from normal. 3. Provides appropriate interventions based on accepted standards. 4. Gives appropriate health teachings to pregnant mothers with emphasis on: 4.1 hygiene in pregnancy. 4.2 prevention of complications/ risk factors. 4.3 nutrition. 4.4 exercise. 4.5 management of common discomforts associated with pregnancy. 4.6 preparation for delivery. 5. Conducts home visits to normal prenatal cases following proper protocol. 6. Performs the bag technique correctly. 7. Evaluates effectiveness of interventions provided.

8. Makes appropriate and timely referrals. INTRAPARTUM 9. Assesses the progress of labor accurately. 10. Interprets correctly the signs and symptoms of labor. 11. Assists the mother during the normal delivery of the baby. 11.1 prevents complications. 11.2 prevents laceration. 12. 15. Carries out accurately doctors- orders related to management of the mothers- condition including the administration of oxytocin after expulsion of placenta. 16. Gives intravenous fluids during obstetrical emergencies following proper protocol. 17. Repairs perineal laceration following proper protocol. POSTPARTUM 18. Assesses accurately condition of the mother immediately after delivery. 18.1 obtains vital signs. 18.2 monitors signs and symptoms of complications. 19. Interprets signs and symptoms accurately. 20. Makes timely and appropriate referrals. 21. Provides appropriate care to mothers after delivery. 22. Supervises mothers performs self care activities. 23. Gives health teachings on: 23.1 breast feeding 23.2 hygiene 23.3 postpartum check-up 23.4 nutrition 23.5 exercises 23.6 prevention of complications 23.7 human sexuality 24. Provides motivation to couples to utilize family planning services. 25. Performs relevant procedures following proper protocol i.e. periheat, pericare, bag technique. 26. Conducts home visit to normal postpartum following proper protocol. 27. Evaluates effectiveness of interventions.

NEONATE AND INFANT 28. Assesses accurately the condition of the neonate immediately after birth. 28.1 Takes the APGAR score and vital signs (TPR). 28.2 Obtains anthropometric measurements i.e. BW, BL, head and chest circumference. 28.3 Checks reflexes. 29. Detects deviations from normal. 30. Makes necessary and timely referrals. 31. Performs relevant procedures following proper protocol. 31.1 Cord care-immediate and daily 31.2 Eye prophylaxis 31.3 Bathing 31.4 Identification 31.5 Suctioning 31.6 Injection of vitamin K 32. Conducts home visit following proper protocol. 33. Supervises mother in providing care to the infant. 34. Provides health teaching to mothers on: 34.1 nutrition 34.2 daily care 34.3 prevention of illness 34.4 immunization 34.5 monitoring of growth and development 34.6 childrearing practices 35. Accomplishes accurately and files on time the birth certificate. 36. Evaluates effectiveness of interventions provided.

WORKING AS A MEMBER/LEADER OF THE TEAM 37. Manages a barangay health station. 38. Performs first aid services as necessary following proper protocol. 39. Makes correct judgment/ decision on cases to be handled by the midwife. 40. Utilizes appropriate community resources in rendering primary health services to the community. 41.
