THE ETERNAL CONSEQUENCES OF HELL We are living in the last days. Just look around and you will see the signs of the times. The Bible says that “in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” (2 Timothy 3:1-4). People are living their lives as if there are no consequences for what they do. Indeed, many people today believe that there is no God, that there is no heaven and hell and that there is no life after death and that they therefore can live and do as they please. Some people even believe that a loving God will never throw them into hell and therefore they think they are free to do whatever they want. This is why the world today is in such a mess. Like God said: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6). The world today desperately needs to hear the Gospel, the full Gospel, the full counsel of God. Most preaching today is totally unbalanced. Many preach only the love of God while omitting the righteousness and justice of God. That’s why sinners continue unalarmed and un-awakened in their sinful ways without realizing the danger they are in, because the preachers are unfaithful in their delivery of the Gospel-message. Preachers should lift up our voices and warn people that there are consequences to what they do. We should warn people that they will reap what they sow. Preachers should preach that they want them to go to heaven and that we do not want them to go to hell and that if they refuse to repent and turn to Jesus, hell awaits them. Many preachers today don’t preach about hell anymore. People-pleasing preachers love to tickle itching ears with nice, pleasant preaching. The true preachers of God will never be people-pleasers. They will preach the full counsel of God … including heaven and hell-fire… sin and salvation through Jesus Christ. Now there are many different opinions concerning hell. Some, like the Russellites (Jehovah’s Witnesses), believe that hell is only the grave. Others, like the Seventh-Day Adventists believe that unbelievers will be annihilated and cease to exist. Most fundamental Christians believe that hell is a place of torment … where all those who are disobedient and unbelieving will spent an eternity. What says the Scriptures? What does the Scriptures say about hell and it’s consequences? Will the disobedient and unbelieving really be tormented forever and ever or will they be put out of existence? Let’s have a look at the Word of God and find out for ourselves what it has to say on the subject of hell…

I say. and to be with Christ. It is clear from these 2 verses that there is life after death… according to the Word of God. then I want to ask: “Where’s the gain?” “Wouldn’t it be better to abide in the flesh and labour for Christ until the day of judgment than to be asleep?” Death would have been no gain to the Christian if the doctrine of soul-sleep were true. we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith. Indeed. you are immediately absent from the body and present with the Lord. Paul wrote to the Philippians: “For to me to live is Christ. unconscious until the Day of Judgment? When a believer dies. to die is gain for the Christian.2 Before we look at this subject. For the true Christian. But if I live in the flesh. If we were only asleep until the day of judgment. That there is life after death is absolutely certain. Let me mention just a few examples: Jesus told the dying thief on the cross that: “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise. .” (Luke 23:43). you are immediately with Christ. whilst we are at home in the body.” So when you die as a Christian. 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 says the same thing. Now that we know that there is life after death … what happens immediately after you die? Will you be alive and conscious somewhere in the Universe or will you just lay there in the grave. having a desire to depart. the judgment. not by sight:) We are confident. this is the fruit of my labor: yet what I shall choose I want not. Just a casual reading through the Scriptures will be enough to prove to anyone that there is life after death. Death would rather rob the Christian of valuable opportunities to serve the Lord and to further His Kingdom.” (Philippians 1:21-24). but after this. we first need to find answers to the following questions: “What happens after you die?” “Will you be conscious or will you be asleep until Judgment Day?” “Is there life after death or will we cease to exist when we die?” These are important questions. and willing rather to be absent from the body. and to die is gain. knowing that. Hebrews 9:27 declare that it is appointed unto men once to die. and to be present with the Lord. but thank God this is not so. which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. to die is gain. It reads: “Therefore we are always confident. Once we have the answers to these questions. we are ready to look at the doctrine of hell. for that means that he will immediately depart this life to enter into the immediate presence of Christ … never to depart from Him for ever! Notice verse 23… when you depart from this life. For I am in a strait between two. he or she goes immediately to Heaven … to be where Christ is.

even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring WITH him. How long. and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice. saying. with the voice of the archangel. In Revelation 6:9-11 it is written: “And when he had opened the fifth seal.” Please note verse 14. holy and true. that they should rest yet for a little season. That the dead are conscious and awake can also be seen in the story about Lazarus and the rich man in Luke 16:19-31. that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord. concerning them which are asleep. Wherefore comfort one another with these words. should be fulfilled. their souls are conscious and alive and are found crying out to God. even as others which have no hope. O Lord. Although their bodies are lying in the graves.3 Some people like to quote 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 as proof for the doctrine of soul-sleep because death is referred to as sleep in this passage. I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God. brethren. This is yet more proof that a believer who dies goes immediately to Heaven to be with Christ. especially since ‘sleep’ is never used with reference to the soul. This would not have been possible if the doctrine of soul-sleep were true. they have to be in Heaven already. He will bring WITH Him all those saints who already died in the Lord. When the Lord Jesus comes back. it always refer to the body and cannot be applied to the soul. and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Why are death likened to sleep in this passage? Answer: When a man dies … his body takes on the appearance of sleep.” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And white robes were given unto every one of them. Let’s read the whole passage and see if it really teaches soulsleep: “But I would not have you to be ignorant. If soul-sleep were true. It is written: “It came . For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout. Someone once wrote: “In every instance where the word ‘sleep’ is used to describe death. until their fellow servants also and their brethren. those that died in Jesus are still lying unconscious in the graves and there would have been no way Jesus could bring them WITH Him when He comes down from Heaven with a shout. For Jesus to bring the saints with Him at His second coming.” Notice with me that these are people who were already killed and therefore dead. that should be killed as they were. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again. and it was said unto them. that ye sorrow not.

This Greek word can be found in Luke 16:23 in the story of Lazarus and the rich man. and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water. And in hell he lifted up his eyes. Father Abraham. Jesus took all those in . One part is a place of torment where all the unrighteous go when they die and the other part is called “Abraham’s Bosom” where all the righteous go when they die. The word “Hell” in this verse is the Greek word “Tartarus”. being in torments. When we talk about “Hell”. “There was a certain rich man!” These Scriptures gives sufficient evidence that the doctrine of soul-sleep cannot be true and that the believer who dies goes immediately to be with Christ. It is called the “second death. A great gulf (Luk 16:26) separates these two places from one another. and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died. we may refer to any of these 3 places. This is therefore a real story about real people. This word occurs just once in the Bible at 2 Peter 2:4. “Hades” is made up of two parts. have mercy on me. The verse reads: “… God spared not the angels that sinned. and seeing Abraham afar off. “Tartarus” is the place where all the fallen angels are kept with chains of darkness. and delivered them into chains of darkness. When Jesus died on the cross.” (verse 22-24) Some people reason that the story about Lazarus and the rich man is just a parable. which sometime were disobedient. and cool my tongue. the question remains … “What about the unbelievers? What happens to them when they die?” According to Revelation 21:8 … all unbelievers will be thrown into the lake of fire. “Gehenna” and “Tartarus” are all translated as “Hell” in our English Bibles. when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah.” (1 Peter 3:19-20). and was buried.” The lake of fire is what we would call Hell. The Strong’s Concordance defines “Hades” as the place of departed souls. The Greek words “Hades”. that the beggar died. Jesus Christ spoke more about Hell than anyone else in the Bible. but cast them down to hell. for I am tormented in this flame. Now. to be reserved unto the day of Judgment. but there are actually 3 different places and are NOT the same. And he cried and said. A quick look at any concordance will confirm the fact. and Lazarus in his bosom. to be reserved unto judgment”. Those who have a little knowledge of Greek will also notice that the word “Hell” is written in 3 different ways in the Original Greek New Testament.4 to pass. This cannot be since Jesus Christ NEVER used proper names like Lazarus and Abraham in ANY of His parables. He went down to Hades (to Abraham’s Bosom) and preached from there across the gulf to “the spirits in prison.

Interestingly. yea. There would have been no reason for any fear if hell was only the grave where people are put out of existence. From this statement we learn that Hell was originally created for the devil and his angels. We need to fear God by staying away from sin and evil. I say unto you. to put the fear of God in the hearts of the hearers … that they should flee from their sins and turn to Jesus Christ for salvation. If we don’t fear the Lord. this does NOT mean that human beings cannot go there as well. Jesus Christ will say to all the unrighteous at the Day of Jugdment: “Depart from me. hell is a real place that holds in real danger for sinners. ye cursed. prepared for the devil and his angels”. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him.” (Luke 12:45) The fear of God is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom (Psalm 111:10.” (verse 46). Now. Even after you are saved. They will not be . After Jesus says these words to the unrighteous they will “go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. On the other hand. always-saved”. This is the ultimate destination of all the wicked and unrighteous. Fear him. The Old Testament saints that inhabited Abraham’s Bosom are now with Jesus Christ in Heaven. The third Greek word “Gehenna” is the place that we would call the Lake of Fire. However. Jesus Christ spoke to His disciples and said: “Be not afraid of them that kill the body. there is no such thing as “once-saved. Those preachers who are faithful in their preaching will be accused from time to time as “scaring” people. He talked about “Gehenna” … the Lake of Fire. Those who obey the devil (John 8:44) and that do his lusts are fitting companions to the devil and his angels … in the lake of fire. Jesus also said that the fire in Hell is an everlasting fire that will burn for an eternity. Jesus spoke these words originally to His disciples! You see. Abraham’s Bosom is empty now. we might be thrown into hell as a result. the unrighteous are waiting in Hades until the Day of Judgment after which they will be thrown into the Lake of Fire (Revelation 20:14). the only ones who inhabit Hades at this moment are the unrighteous ones in the place of torment. they will have to be conscious and be able to feel the pain. which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell. Everywhere where Jesus spoke about hell (except in the story of Lazarus and the rich man). To endure punishment. The unrighteous will be punished for ever. (Matthew 25:41). and after that have no more that they can do. there is still a danger of ending up in hell if you are living in sin and refusing to repent. Prov 1:7). Well.5 Abraham’s Bosom with Him to Heaven (see Ephesians 4:8 and Matthew 27:52-53). According to Jesus. preaching is supposed to do just that. into everlasting fire.

” There is no annihilation in Hell. Earthly fire burns until there is nothing left to burn. and from the glory of his power.” (Mark 9:4348). In the same way. otherwise you will feel nothing. you can still pick up the pieces from the floor and throw it in the rubbish-bin… it has not ceased to exist. their punishment would not have been everlasting. and the bush was not consumed. an everlasting destruction. but Jesus said that the fire of hell is a fire that never shall be quenched… It is almost like the fire in the burning bush of which we read in Exodus 3:2 … “the bush burned with fire. Let me use an example to clarify my point: If you drop a light-bulb on the floor … you will destroy it totally so that it can never be used again… however. In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God. Jesus said that Hell is a place where the fire shall never be quenched … “Where their worm dieth not. Like Revelation 9:6 says: “And in those days shall men seek death. and shall desire to die. If you are unconscious. you must exist to be punished. you cannot weep. You must be conscious. annihilation would have been a relief to a tortured conscience and would be no punishment to such. Jesus said that there will be weeping and “wailing and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 13:41-42. In Matthew 18:8 this fire is also referred to as an “everlasting fire”. and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord. 49-50). In order to receive punishment.6 annihilated at any point of time. and death shall flee from them. Those who don’t know God and those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ will be punished with everlasting destruction … in flaming fire. Their own conscience will torture the unrighteous forever for all the opportunities they wasted to receive the Savior while they were on earth. the fire will automatically be put out as there will be nothing left to burn.” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). and shall not find it. These people forget that the fire of hell cannot be compared with earthly fires. Some people argue that the word “destruction” means that something is destroyed and therefore cease to exist. and the fire is not quenched.” The Bible says that “the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels. This cannot be true. the wicked soul and body will be . The punishment with which the disobedient will be afflicted with will be an everlasting punishment. you must be there to receive it. This will add to the despair and utter hopelessness to the people in Hell when they realize that there will be no end to their torments. since something that gets destroyed does not necessarily cease to exist. Any reasonable man will agree that to be able to undergo punishment. If they would be annihilated. Some people say that the fire cannot burn forever because when something is burnt up. Indeed.

This is the second death.” The word “hell” in verse 14 is the word “Hades” again. the Lake of Fire. As we’ve seen before.7 destroyed (see Mat 10:28) in hell. by the holy necessity of constraining love. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. If you have no concern to see others saved from sin and hell. Those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. all the wicked and unrighteous ones of all ages will be thrown into the lake of fire as you will read in verses 14-15: “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. people will spend all eternity in the Lake of Fire! How Christians can know this and still refuse to go out to preach the Gospel is past my comprehension. with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast. the Son of God. Those who do not obey the truth.” After a thousand years. at the Day of Judgment. and them that worshiped his image. Revelation 14:10-11 describes it very vividly what will be the destiny of those who reject the Son of God and of those who are disobedient to the truth: “The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God. . and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels. all the unrighteous ones of all ages immediately goes to a place of torment called “Hades” when they die (Luke 16) where they will be waiting for the Day of Judgment. to seek the salvation of others. Without Jesus Christ. and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever. Someone once said that all who find Christ for themselves are impelled. However. which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation. where the beast and the false prophet are. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. the devil will join them in the Lake of Fire as Revelation 20:10 says: “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone. and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascends up forever and ever: and they have no rest day or night…” They will be tormented by hell-fire day and night for ever and ever with no end in view.” Then. this destruction will be everlasting in the sense that it will go on and on and on for all eternity. The place where they will experience the wrath of God in its full measure is in Gehenna. has the wrath of God abiding on them (John 3:36) and will also drink the cup of the wrath of God. and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him. there is no way you can experience torment forever and ever without being conscious forever and ever! Therefore there can be no such thing as annihilation of the wicked. I don’t think you are saved yourself! Think about it! The Beast and the False Prophet will be the first inhabitants of the Lake of Fire Revelation 19:20 says: “And the beast was taken. You see. but obey unrighteousness (Rom 2:8-9) will drink the full cup of the wrath of God.

Whoremongers are those who have sex outside of marriage. he referred to the second death that Revelation 21:8 speaks about. fortune-tellers and witch-doctors (Deut 18:10-12) among others. the beast and the false prophet are. The first death is the physical death that every human being will experience. There. Based on all these Scriptures. Let’s look at a few objections against the doctrine of Hell and Eternal Punishment and see whether they can be answered from Scripture: 1. and unbelieving. Idolaters are those who love anything else more than God and the liars are those who speak untruths. and sorcerers. and idolaters. This is the doctrine of Hell and Eternal Punishment. you will see that what the devil meant was that you . Hades will deliver up the dead which are in it (Revelation 20:13) to be judged and then Hades and all it’s inhabitants will be thrown into Gehenna.” This is to take Scripture out of context. The righteous will never be hurt by the second death (Rev 2:10-11).” The fearful are those who are afraid to confess Christ before men (2 Tim 1:7-8). where the devil. This spiritual death is the separation of the soul from God because of sin. Satan will not be annihilated. which means ‘drugs’). Murderers include those who hate others (1 John 3:15). Revelation 21:8 needs to be proclaimed from the rooftops! How many are guilty of these sins? The verse says: “But the fearful. A man has no one else to blame but himself if he finds himself in hell. 20:13). Sorcerers are drug-users (the Greek word is Pharmacia. with no end in view. for ever and ever. and abominable.8 Then. and whoremongers. Hell will be filled with these people. shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. and all liars. The second death is the spiritual death that all the unrighteous will experience. we must conclude the following: The wicked people’s torture will never be over. The fires of hell burn eternally! No one in hell will eventually die. Some people object against the immortality of the soul by quoting Genesis 3:4 where the devil told Eve that “Ye shall not surely die. at the Day of Judgment. the unbelieving are those who do not believe in Christ (John 3:36). the abominable includes people like homosexuals (Lev 18:22. and murderers. the Lake of Fire. When the Apostle Paul wrote that the wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23). Physical death is merely the separation of the body and soul. If you read the 3 verses before verse 4. These are the eternal consequences that the wicked will suffer in hell. Neither will be his servants and those who do his lusts. they will together suffer day and night.

then Jesus did not pay the price for sin. whom thou hast sent. we are actually sinning against an INFINITE Holy God. They forget that sin is exceedingly sinful (Rom 7:13)! Our sins are infinitely offensive to Him and therefore they deserve everlasting punishment. being witnessed by the law and the prophets.” This is eternal life: To know and to be intimately acquainted with the only true God and His Son.9 may disobey God and still not lose your soul. Jesus Christ. It reads: “But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested. In other words. they have made the choice of hell… not God! That is why Hell is eternal. but they will never receive eternal life. Some people quote 2 Corinthians 5:21 and reason that if the penalty for sin is burning in hell throughout eternity. They argue that it would be unfair and unjust to punish a sinner with everlasting punishment for only living a mere 70 years of sin. Jesus Christ defined the term “eternal life” for us in John 17:3. not even the devil. isn’t it? 2. Who paid the debt we cannot pay! Those who believe in Him will have their debt removed. Always-Saved”.5 3. Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe…” You see. Sound very much like the doctrine “Once-Saved. Every Human soul is eternal in nature… made to live with the Eternal God whom they have decided to live without! Indeed. Because of our sins. Romans 3:21-22 answers this objection. and Jesus Christ. The people in hell will continue to exist throughout all eternity while experiencing extreme torment. 4. He said while praying to His Father: “And this is life eternal. they will never know and be intimately acquainted with the Lord Jesus Christ which is really what eternal life is all about. merits endless torture in Hell throughout eternity! These people who reason like this seems to forget that when we sin. People that reason like this don’t know what eternal life is. that they might know thee the only true God. but those who refuse to surrender to Him will continue on to increase their debt and guilt… Laying up Wrath unto Wrath! Rom 2. Some people think God would be cruel to allow a sinner to be punished and tormented in hell for all eternity. Praise God for His Son Jesus Christ. they reason that a wicked person has to receive eternal life so that he can be tortured for eternity. the righteousness . He paid the price for all. Some went even so far as to say that no sinner. Jesus Christ died for all (1 John 2:2). our debt before God is so great that we can NEVER pay it back. Some people object to the doctrine of Hell and Everlasting Punishment by saying that a person cannot be tortured in hell throughout all eternity without first receiving eternal life. It’s important to remember that YHWH made man in His Eternal image and nature.

is not part of the earth and will therefore not pass away. which will be the ultimate destiny of all unrepentant sinners. Some quote Revelation 21:1 to prove that Hell itself has to pass away. and whoremongers. called “Hades”.” Russellites (Jehovah Witnesses) and Seventh-Day Adventists err greatly on this doctrine of Hell and Eternal Punishment. Sadly. even now. Hades might be part of the earth. but the wrath of God abides upon them. They teach the doctrines of soul-sleep and the annihilation of the wicked. A few verses LATER … in Revelation 21:8 you read that “the fearful.10 of God is available to ALL men. just to be thrown back there again after the Day of Judgment?” The wicked are already judged and condemned. . and murderers. when they die (Luke 16:22-23) where they will remain in torment until the Day of Judgement. and idolaters. but Gehenna. Both doctrines are totally unbiblical as we’ve already seen. and sorcerers. the wicked will not be taken out of Hell for the Day of Judgment and then to be thrown back into it. Once you die. the lake of fire. John 3:18 says that those who do not believe are condemned already and verse 36 says that those who do not believe will not see life. if they don’t believe in Jesus. but by then their fate is sealed. 6. Then they will be fetched from there to appear before the thrown of God (Rev 20:13) after which they will then be thrown into the Lake of Fire to be punished there for all eternity (Rev 20:14-15). They will still stand before God on the Day of Judgment to bow their knees and to confess with their tongues that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father (Phil 2:1011). And no. and unbelieving. the most of humanity rejects His free gift and will suffer everlasting punishment in hell as a result. the lake of fire is not part of Heaven or of Earth. and abominable. 5. Then. even though Jesus paid the price for all. shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. your destiny is fixed. Some people argue as follows: “Let us assume for a moment that a wicked person does go to Hell at the time of death. Then it is either Heaven or Hell depending on whether you’re a follower of Jesus or not. and all liars. However. I’ve mentioned before that the wicked go to a place of torment. try to explain why the wicked are then resurrected for the Day of Judgment? What is the point of having a Judgment Day if the wicked are already burning in hell? What is the point of taking the wicked out of Hell to be judged. but only those who believe in Jesus Christ will receive the benefit.

16 For God so loved the world. who is the Lamb slain for lost sinners from the foundation of the world. 3. that He gave His only begotten son. O WHERE WILL YOU SPEND ETERNITY? HEAVEN OR HELL WHEN YOU DIE! THIS IS YOUR WAKE-UP CALL!” TRUST AND OBEY! IT”S NOT TOO LATE! “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. He is also Just… and must require infinite vengeance upon anyone who treads underfoot the precious blood of Christ.11 Walter Martin.” Yes. Hell is real. who wrote the excellent book “Kingdom of the Cults” put it well when he wrote: “Jehovah’s witnesses think God is a ‘fiend’ because He executes eternal righteous judgment.” (Heb 12:29) . It is no illusion. choice of heaven or hell has always been up to every individual soul! Jn. that WHOMSOEVER should Trust and Believe in Him… shall NOT PERISH… but have everlasting life! That is why God now commands ALL men everywhere to REPENT! Where you go… is not up to God. They make much to-do about God being Love but forget that because He is Love. Throughout human history.” (Heb 10:31) “For our God is a consuming fire. and hell is not an illusion – everlasting conscious punishment is a terrifying reality of God’s infinite justice upon the souls of unbelieving men. or His Church! It’s up to you! So now is the time to preach more than ever: “WHERE. He does not want them to go to Hell! Otherwise He would not have sent His only begotten Son… to die in our place… if it was not absolutely necessary. God wants people to go to Heaven. Death is not extinction.
