SON or Self Organising Network uses data generated by the radio network such as traffic loads and equipment alarms to adjust operating parameters. SON replaces or supplements network engineering activities such as configuring, managing, optimising, planning and healing. The objectives of SON include increasing network performance with the same physical assets, a reduction of OPEX by removing engineering hours from the optimisation process and reducing CAPEX by squeezing as much as possible from the existing network. The development of SON is being driven by multiple factors. The

high cost of customer acquisition makes it imperative to deliver the best possible user experience at the right price. This must be done within an environment of increasing network complexity as all operators are challenged by the multiple radio networks in a variety of standards and frequency bands.
