When installing Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 one of the following errors occurs; 0x800f084f, 0x800705aa, 0x800736b3 All of those errors seemed related to problems with previous Windows Updates. Use the following procedure to resolve this issue; 1) run sfc /scannow to check for errors. 2) Download and run the Windows System Update Readiness Tool (SUR) 3) Now check Windows Update for any updates (except SP1) If any updates found try to install them. Most times the installation of SP1 fails because one of the updates could not be installed during the service pack installation. If one of the updates still fails to install; Stop the Windows Update service, delete the entire %windir%SoftwareDistribution folder, and start the Windows Update service again. Now try to download and install the updates again. If the updates or one update still fails; 1) Manually download the missing update(s) from the Microsoft site 2) Extract the update (.msu file) with the command c:cd c:MSUFolderexpand -F:* Saved_MSU_File_Name.msu c:MSUFolderYou need to enter the full path to the .msu file.3) Now in the folder with the extracted files you find a .cab file, also extract the contents of this file to the same folder. (you can extract the contents by using Windows Explorer). 4) Now you now need the .mum, .manifest and .cat files from the extracted files. Occasionally, the required file may be a root package. These packages have no SKU information and follow a set prefix: Package_for_KB958690~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~ The root package extracted from the cab file will be named update.mum. To verify that the newly created update.mum is in fact the correct file, open the file with notepad.exe and ensure the following attributes are present in <assemble><assemblyIdentity> name=KB958690 processorArchitecture=amd64" version="" If the update.mum is correct, rename it to Package_for_KB958690~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~ before copying it to the checkSUR temporary directory. Important Renaming to is also required before replacing both .mum and .cat files.

5) Copy the files tho the following locations: The files are located in subdirectories below %windir%. See the following examples: *.mum files are located in %windir%servicingpackages *.manifest files are located in %windir%winsxsmanifests Package*.cat files are located in %windir%servicingpackages 6) Now run the SUR tool again, when you now check %windir%LogsCBSchecksur.log you will see it repaired the update(s) you just added the files for. 7) Finally run Windows Update again, the updates will now succeed, reboot your system again if required. Install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 again, still the out of resources error? Boot in safe mode and try again.
