CHARACTERISTICS OF YOUTUBE TRAFFIC IN ORANGE NETWORKS AND ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT ON CACHING
The objective of this talk is to describe the most salient characteristics of YouTube traffic in Orange residential network in France. We notably exhibit the fact that popularity of video files can be decomposed into two main components: files that have a Zipf law popularity (corresponding to files which are downloaded a large number of times) and a "noise" component (files viewed only once or twice but representing more than 80% of the total file population). In spite of the fact that the Zipf law has a skew parameter less than one, we show through simulation experiments that caching can achieve significant bandwidth savings (by analyzing the byte hit ratio) even if the global file hit ratio is low. We investigate several refinements of caching (notably by filtering noise), which do not bring significant improvements. This is essentially due to the presence of extremely heavy hitters in traffic. On the basis of these observations, we develop a mathematical model, which can roughly estimate the performance of caching. We finally investigate the cooperation between cache servers in order to exploit the regional aspects of YouTube traffic.

Invited Talk by Fabrice Guillemin Orange Labs

Biography F. Guillemin graduated from Ecole Polytechnique in 1984 and from Telecom Paris in 1989. He received the PhD degree from the University of Rennes in 1992 and defended his "habilitation" thesis in 1999 at the University Pierre et Marie Curie (LIP6), Paris. Since 1989, he has been with Orange Labs (former CNET and France Telecom R&D), involved in the standardization of ATM and IP traffic metrology. He is currently leading a project on the evolution of network control and member of the Orange Expert community "Network of the Future".
