The Mannequin Makers takes place on three different continents, at sea and on an uninhabited island. How do those locations inform the storytelling? A body builder and his disciple, the quest for lifelike mannequins, an aging surf-lifesaver: what is the novel saying about the perfect human form? There are a number of characters who cannot talk at various points in the novel, while others, like Flossie, do not get the chance to tell their side of the story. Is The Mannequin Makers commenting on the value of talk, of silence and self-expression? ‘The Carpenter’s Tale’ is the longest of the novel’s four sections and ranges the farthest away from the town of Marumaru and the windows of its department stores.
