Saturday, August 10, 6 p.m. vs. Carolina RHP Zach Davies (6-5, 3.53) vs. RHP Shawn Morimando (8-10, 2.91)

This Day in Keys History

August 8, 1990: Frederick demolished Lynchburg 21-2 at Harry Grove Stadium, setting single-game records in runs and hits (24) that still stand. Tim Holland went 5-for-6 with two RBIs and Tyrone Kingwood went 4-for-5 with five RBIs. The Keys matched their 21- run outburst less than a year later, on June 30, 1991 at Prince William.

GAME PREVIEW

The Keys edged Myrtle 3-2 in extras on the road Sunday in their series finale with the Pelicans, winning the three-game set and their fourth game in their last five contests. That victorious spurt has pushed the Keys into second in the Carolina League North, in position to earn a playoff berth. Frederick returns home tonight to start a three- game series with Carolina and a six-game homestand. Southpaw Tim Berry starts for the Keys, sporting a 3-0 record and a 2.73 ERA against the Mudcats this season. Robert Whitenack starts for Carolina after being promoted today. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. with coverage beginning 30 minutes prior with the The Frederick Gorilla Pre- Game Show on 1450-AM The Source and wthu.org.

KEYS STARTER: LHP Tim Berry (8-6, 3.86)

Since the all-star break, Berry is 4-2 with a 2.90 ERA in eight starts. Before the break, batters hit .288 against him and after the break their average is down to .235, despite Berry’s K/9 rate going from 8.6 before to 6.4 after.

He’s 3-0 with a 2.73 ERA in five starts against the Mudcats this season.

Rated by Baseball America as the Orioles’ No. 11 prospect entering 2013 season.

Drafted in the final (50th) round of the 2009 draft by the Orioles after senior season of high school, during which he threw a no-hitter and then had Tommy John surgery.

MUDCATS STARTER: RHP Robert Whitenack (0-1, 4.66)

Was rated as the No. 23 prospect in the Cubs system entering the season despite having had Tommy John surgery in June of 2011. After going 7-0 with a 1.93 ERA between Advanced-A and Double-A before his injury in 11, he struggled when he returned last season, going 1-6 with a 5.96 ERA for Advanced-A Daytona.

Made two starts for Carolina in May, going 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA. Also started twice for Double-A Akron and allowed 14 runs in six innings.

Started in eight games and pitched once in relief for short-season-A Mahoning Valley before being promoted today. He went 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA.

Drafted by the Cubs in the eighth round of the 2009 draft and was claimed off waivers by Cleveland on April 3. Hes the only player ever drafted out of SUNY Old Westbury.

KEYNOTES:

GOOD TO HAVE BERRY ON THE MOUND: When Tim Berry starts for the Keys, they usually win. Though the Keyslefty is just 8-6 on the season, the team is 15-6 when he starts. At home, Berry has started nine times and the Keys have won six of those games. He also has an ERA of 2.87 at Harry Grove Stadium, where opponents are batting .263 against him.

JOHNNY BE QUICK: Keys outfielder Johnny Ruettiger stole two bases in the Keyslast game improving his season total to 33, third best in the Carolina League and four steals out of second place. Ruettigers been efficient on the basepaths, too, successfully swiping bags when he runs 83 percent of the time.

SMELLS LIKE PLAYOFFS: The Keys have moved back into second-place in the Carolina League North, behind first-half winner Potomac and ahead of their playoff- berth competition, Lynchburg and Wilmington. Frederick leads the third-place Hillcats by a game entering play Thursday.
