Additional Comments: Completely volunteer run, profits go to local projects supported by BISCO, a not for profit emphasizing projects benefiting children in the western Monroe area. The 17th Duck Derby offers the best prizes around for this type of event. The festival is a community wide event. For More Information: Phone: 585-395-0837 www.BrockportArtsFestival.com Swim The Canal at the Maplewood YMCA Meet & Greet Event Location: Genesee Valley Waterways Center, Rochester Event Date: August 11, 2013 Event Time: 2:00 pm 4:00pm Event Cost: Free Event Description: Swim the Erie Canal Challenge invites our members to contribute to our annual Invest in Youth campaign. Swimmers sign up, get a swimmer cut out, track their own mile progress by swimming (70.1 lengths = 1 mile) in our Maplewood pool. At their 25 mile mark, they receive their authentic I swam the Erie Canal @ the Maplewood YMA t-shirt. On Canal Splash day our Canal swimmers will meet and greet each other at Genesee Valley Park on the Erie Canal for an Ice Cream Social. Kayaking and canoe rentals will be available through the Genesee Waterways Center. Additional Information: Each Canal swimmer gets a Canal historical pamphlet & a canal map. Swimmers count from May 1st, opening day of the Canal to calculate their mileage. We plan to swim the entire 363 mile distance, through the seasons from Albany to Buffalo however long it takes us. Erie Canal Trail and the Genesee Riverway Trail Event Location: 1200 Edgewood Ave., Rochester Event Date: August 11, 2013 Event Time: 9:00am Event Cost: Free Event Description: A slow & easy ride of the RBC. 16 miles mainly flat with a few very low climbs to downtown Rochester for a rest stop. Wayne County: Palmyra Pirate Weekend Event Location: Port of Palmyra Marina, Palmyra Event Date: August 9 10, 2013 Event Time: August 9th: from 7pm 11pm, August 10th: All Day Event Cost: Free, but some activities may require an entry fee Event Description: Historic Palmyras Pirates of the Erie Canal invade Palmyra, NY during the seventh annual Palmyra Pirate Weekend, bearing a boatload of family-friendly fun for all ages. Bed racing, 5K race, Pirate Kazoo Band Parade, Captain Kids games and treasure hunt, canal trail tours, Historic Palmyra pirate tales, museum tours and more. Cayuga County: Canal Splash Montezuma Historic Canal Walking Tour Event Location: High Street, Montezuma Event Date: August 10, 2013 Event Time: 9:00 am Event Cost: No Cost Event Description: Historic Walking Tour in Montezuma Heritage Park featuring several trails leading to the early remains of canal sites including the original Clinton Ditch, Lock 62, Richmond Aqueduct, paper mill, Enlarged Erie Canal, drydock, and the CayugaSeneca Canal Lock 11. Mike Riley, Canal Historian will lead the tour. Additional Comments: Following the walk tour a dish to pass picnic will be held in Memorial Park Pavilion, Dock Street. Canal boat cabin interior, tools used to build the Erie, many other displays of a canal villages early years. Models of a canal lock, aqueduct, and a stump puller. Murals by Dawn Jordan. Madison County: Canastota Canal Town Mural Mania and Park Dedication Event Location: 122 Canal St., Canastota Event Date: August 11, 2013 Event Time: 2-5pm Event Cost: Free Event Description: Dedication of the Canalscape Enhancement & Interpretation project that includes two large historic Canastota Canal murals and park along Canal Street. There will be entertainment and the opening of an Art Show of local artists and featuring works of muralist Corky Goss, Professor of Studio Art at Cazenovia College. Additional Comments: The project was a result of a grant awarded by the Erie Canalway Heritage Fund and donations from local businesses and organizations. Walking Tour -- "African American Life and the Abolitionist Movement in Canajoharie" Event Location: Corner of Route 10 and Mohawk Street, Canajoharie Event Date: Saturday, August 10, 2013 Event Time: 11:00 am Event Cost: Free Event Description: Montgomery County Historian/RMO Kelly Yacobucci Farquhar will lead a walking tour in the Village of Canajoharie. The tour will highlight various sites associated with the African Americans who lived in Canajoharie during the 19th century as well as potential abolitionist activity. Brochures will identify the sites on a map of the Village of Canajoharie and the walking tour will include a portion of the sites, not all, but the brochures/maps will be available long after the walking tour. We will meet at the NBT Bank parking lot on the corner of Route 10 and Mohawk Street (site of Hotel Wagner and the former drive-thru bank). There will some hills involved in the walking tour and it is expected to last approximately 1 hour. Essex County: North Star Underground Railroad Museum Tours Event Location: 1131 Mace Chasm Rd., Ausable Chasm Event Date: August 9 11, 2013 Event Time: 9am 4pm Event Cost: Free Event Description: The North Star Museum reveals the hidden history of the Champlain Line of the underground railroad. Poignant exhibits portray compelling stories of fugitives from slavery who passed through Northeastern New York and the Champlain Valley on their way to Quebec and Ontario Canada.
