1. (a) A small peg P rest on a spring as shown in Fig. for Question 1(a) that is contained inside the smooth pipe.
When the spring is compressed to 0.15 m, the spring exerts an upward force of 60 N on the peg. Determine the
point of attachment A (x,y,0) of cord PA so that the tension in cords PB and PC equals 30 N and 50 N respectively.
(b) Each cord as shown in Fig. For Question 1(b) can sustain a maximum tension of 500 N. Determine the largest
mass of pipe that can be supported.

2. (a) For the given loading as shown in Fig. for question No. 2(a), determine the zero force member in the trusses
shown. 8

(b) A 30 kg shaft is held horizontal by a self-locking brace which consists of two parts EDC and CDB hanged at C
as shown in fig. for question no 2(b). These two arms bearings against each other at D-determine the force P
required to release the brace.
3. (a) Locate the centroid x of the solid shown in Fig. for question No. 3(a), by integration.

(b) Determine the moments of inertia of the beams cross-sectional area shown in Fig. for question 3(b) about
the x and y axes shown.
4. (a) The position of the automobile jack shown in Fig. for question no 4(a) is controlled by a screw ABC that is
single-threaded at each end (right-handed thread at A , left-handed thread at C). Each thread has a pitch of 2 mm
and a mean diameter of 12 mm. If the coefficient of static friction is 0.15, determine the magnitude of the couple
M that must be applied to raise the automobile.

(b) Three concrete pipes of equal size and weight are stacked in the yard as shown in Fig. for question no 4(b).
Determine the minimum coefficient of static friction at each point of contact so that the pile does not collapse.
5. (a) Block A has a mass of 10 kg and is hoisted using the rope and pulley system shown in Fig. for question no.
5(a). If the collar is moving to the right at 10 m/ s velocity and has deceleration of 5 m/ x
2
at the instant shown,
determine the tension in the cable connected to the collar at this instant.

(b) At a given instant, the slider block B as shown in Fig. for question No. 5(b) is travelling to the right with the
velocity and acceleration are 15 cm/ sec and 8 cm/ x
2
respectively. Determine angular acceleration of the wheel
at this instant.
6. (a) A 2.5 kg ball A is falling vertically with a velocity of magnitude F
A
=8 m/ x when it is hit as shown in Fig. for
question No. 6(a) by a 1.5 kg ball B which has a velocity of magnitude F
B
= m/ x. If coefficient of restitution
between the two ball is e =.75 and assuming no friction, determine the velocity of each ball immediately after
impact.
(b) The drum shown in Fig. for question No. 6(b) has a mass of 50 kg and a radius of gyration k

=.25 m. A
cord of negligible mass is wrapped around the periphery of the drum and attached to a block having a mass of 20
kg. if the block is released, determine the drums angular acceleration.

7. (a) A 15 kg wheel as shown in Fig. for question No. 7(a) has a moment of inertia I
6
=.2 kg.m
2
. Determine the
minimum velocity it must have to just rollover the obstruction at A, if the wheel does not slip or rebound.

(b) A 25 kg bar is subjected to a couple moment of M =30 N-m as shown in Fig. for question No. 7(b). The spring
has an unstretched length of 0.6 m and always remains in the vertical position due t the roller guide at B.
