EXT. DOWNTOWN AUSTIN - MORNING Blades of light cut across the windshields of traffic in downtown AUSTIN, the veins of the streets moving slow. A faded green TOYOTA rattles along. INT. CAR - CONTINUOUS Inside, LEO HENRY (29) drives stick, one hand on the steering wheel, face sighing at the proceedings. He looks to the passenger seat, where MARY (21) sits blankly peoplewatching. She catches him staring. MARY Hey you. Her smile is gentle. She paws at his arm playfully. He snaps back to the road, shuddering with a wave of fidgety energy. MARY Why do you keep it so cold in here? Mary feels, and realizes shes sitting on Leos BLUE HOODIE. She puts on the three-sizes-too-big hoodie with glee. She holds the sleeve close to her face, and BREATHES IN ITS SMELL. MARY Where are we going this morning? Is this another "Austin Adventure"? Leo grips the wheel a little tighter, and forces a smile. LEO Were going wherever you want to. But I need some coffee first. INT. COFFEE SHOP - MORNING The pair shuffle forward, holding hands in a five-man deep line. Leo stands a head taller than Mary, like a big brother. MARY Will you get me a skinny hazelnut latte? LEO Im not getting you anything. Mary continues, sublimely undaunted. This is a game theyve played before.

MARY Pleeease? LEO You brought your own money, have at it. MARY Consider it a preemptive celebratory drink. LEO You shouldnt be optimistic, its embarrassing. MARY Not falling for your crankiness. Im excited about today. LEO And I hope that works out for you. Being excited. Mary scoffs at him. The line has thankfully gotten close enough for them to hear the BARISTA (mid-20s, hipster as fuck. Gauges? Yeah. Neck tat? Oh sure. Wearing a costume hat? God yes) prattle on to his fellow CLERK. BARISTA ...See but reality is all about perception. You can be on the plane of the present but if your mind is perceiving it differently, then reality is no longer valuable information to you. And then you find yourself in a closed loop of life. Its fuckin tragic. Leo smiles sarcastically at the conversation finally ending. LEO Can I get a regular coffee and a skinny Hazelnut latte? Leo getting a rise out of her again. After a beat, Mary punches him in the arm, smiling. She takes the coffee.

INT. COFFEE SHOP - LATER Leo is parked with an eye on the entrance, and Mary types away at her LAPTOP, before coming to a pause to think. MARY Alright, Poindexter. Im writing a review of the beer joint from last night. Whats a good word to describe a craft IPA thats too hoppy? LEO Its Austin, Im not sure there is such a thing. MARY Personally, I dont find extreme bitterness attractive. LEO So why are you with me? MARY Your body, obviously. Mary tosses Sweet-n-Low packets across the table to him. MARY (CONTD) So you better stick to the zero calorie sweetener, babe. Leo grins at her, taking the packets. His moment is done as something CATCHES HIS EYE. MARY I was thinking, you need to learn how to use the internet. Hes not listening, focused on what he sees. LEO Yeah. He slides down in his seat and pulls his coffee cup close to his face. Whatever he can to make himself look NOT HIMSELF. Mary notices. MARY What...are you doing?

LEO Just getting comfortable. MARY (suspicious) You dont look remotely comfortable. LEO (changing the subject) Well I am. I know how to use the internet, I got broadband when I was 13. MARY Exactly. Youre competing for the worlds attention with people like me whove done it from the cradle. And you dont even know how SnapChat works. LEO Are you saying you want me to sext you? MARY Oh god no. LEO I will. Take out a button or two, let you see the ruffles of my chest hair. Leo mock touches himself and humorously moans like hes Rihanna in a music video. Mary is half-entertained and more-than-half-embarrassed. MARY Please stop. LEO No, its getting too good to me. The two of them are laughing, until the moment is undone as Leo hears HEELS on the floor, and sees someone approaching. He immediately starts gathering his things. MARY Whats wrong?

LEO I just realized Im incredibly uncomfortable. You hungry? MARY Sure, but-Leo grabs her by the arm and they escape out the back. INT. WHOLE FOODS - DAY Leo, now relaxed, leans his chair back and drinks coffee as he watches Mary CHOW DOWN on a taco. Upon making eye contact with him, Mary is self-conscious, but not enough not to enjoy it. MARY (trying to finish her bite) Dont blame me for being a fan of delicious flavor! Leo treats emotions like hole cards--he gives bemused approval as he sips. Finally done, she speaks clearly. MARY You know what today is, right? LEO Please dont. MARY Its a new day for Mary Coughlin. The start of a new era. LEO ...Striking out? MARY (Takes off on his line) --Striking out into the professional world, being a young female member of the creative elite! Having urban adventures, drinking cocktails out of mason jars, making mistakes, getting messy! Leo watches as Mary picks up a head of steam.

MARY (pointing out the window) Every morning, Ill walk down from an apartment just over...there. LEO And then to the coffee shop? MARY And for lunch, a veggie taco walking distance from my desk as the newest writer at MoontowerMagazine.com, where I will hammer out columns about the new normal in our fair city. Mary takes a breath to soak it all in. Leo slowly sets himself and the chair back down. LEO Mary. Im crazy about you. You know this. But you really shouldnt be counting all these chickens before they hatch. MARY This is just one chicken. LEO (whisper) And its a big fucking chicken. MARY Theyre going to offer me the job today. Look. I have great stats, Ive interned every semester for two years, Stacie loved me, Gordon said Id be a great addition. They even gave me a mug! I mean, Im excited, Leo. Why cant you be? LEO Youre right. You should be excited... Leo backs off... Except he doesnt. LEO But think logically. This works out one of two ways: You get the job, and its awesome. LEO (contd) the air is sweeter, all that shit. But the feeling is fleeting, because its what you expected all along. Now lets look at the alternative: You dont get the job. And it hurts. It hurts a fuckton worse because you spent all day thinking it was yours. Now tell me, how is that a good idea? Daggers in Marys eyes. MARY Because its a good idea to want things, Leo. LEO Oh great, now youre pissed. MARY You always do this. LEO What, try to give you some perspective? MARY Just once itd be nice to see you be supportive. LEO Im trying to be realistically supportive. MARY (raising her voice) What the hell does that even mean? The other PATRONS are starting to notice. LEO Means I dont want you to get your hopes up too high. Seriously, Leo? Mary reels. Leo isnt very pleased with himself either. His words hang in the air. Then, in the aftermath, something overcomes Leo.

LEO You know what? Leo intentionally pushes off the table with his foot and he DUMPS OUT OF HIS CHAIR, going ass over teakettle, sending his COFFEE FLYING onto the PATRON carrying a tray behind him. The tray goes on Leo. Mary goes from shocked to laughter in the blink of an eye. The patron is PISSED. Mary rushes over to Leos side. LEO Bet you wont see that every day. INT. LEOS APARTMENT - DAY Leo and Mary come back to Leos trashy Riverside apartment, where he strips off his coffee-stained shirt and applies a new one. She watches him from across the room. MARY Youre an idiot. Do you know that? LEO Im aware. Leo comes close to her. MARY Just let me enjoy this victory, alright? LEO For the record, I wouldnt pick anyone but you for that job. MARY Really? LEO Really really. Mary puts her hands on his chest. MARY You know what the best part about this new era is? You in it. Pained smile from Leo.

9.

The two look out at the STACKS OF BOOKS in front of them. MARY Another part of my new Era: weekly bookstore jaunts. Pick something good. Ill find you in a bit. Mary goes off wandering, pulling up the sleeves on the hoodie. Leo shakes his head, begrudgingly enjoying the moment. INT. BOOKSTORE - LATER Leo pulls a copy of Farewell to Arms off of the shelf, and cracks it open. After a beat, Mary appears from behind him and snatches the book. MARY Youre not allowed to read something youre actively trying to emulate. Here. She hands him a copy of Gaimans The Ocean at the End of the Lane. MARY I think youll like it. Its about a man reliving his life and love. You havent read it, have you? He takes the book, and slowly shakes his head. She kisses him. MARY These pages. Enjoy them. BEAUTY SHOTS of Leo reading, then lifting his head up to watch Mary browse from across the store. (CONTINUED)

He watches her wistfully, until he sees her PHONE GO OFF. A sudden look of WORRY on his face. He checks his WATCH: Oh no. 2:47PM. Mary answers the phone with her usual sunshine. A BEAT. Her expression FALLS. Leo already knows what shes hearing. Shes glass-eyed, nodding along, until the call ends. Leo approaches slowly, and they make eye contact. Mary loses it and bursts into tears in his arms. MARY They said they liked me... Leo leads her out of the store before she makes a scene. MARY Its all I wanted. LEO I know, baby. I know. EXT. BOOKSTORE - DAY Mary tries to get a hold of herself. She turns cold. MARY Go on, say it. LEO What? MARY What you always say. "I told you so." LEO Thats not what I was going to say. MARY But its what you mean. Its whats always behind your words. "Little Mary doesnt know whats good for her. She shouldnt get her hopes too high, or try too hard." Is that all I am to you? Big dreams and a head full of air?! LEO Keep your voice down.

MARY FUCK. YOU, LEO! I am yours and I am broken and you couldnt care less. Leo tries to restrain himself. LEO (starting slowly) Mary, I love you. Youre the last thing I think about before I sleep. You always are. MARY You dont mean that. LEO Listen to me--Every time something hurts you, it does me twice. So I try to minimize things, give them some perspective, take the sting out. MARY Its not your job to give me the cold truth. LEO Thats all I have to give you. MARY But you cant live like that. You need hope, you need faith. Why cant you just believe in me? Leo snaps. LEO You want to know why? You want to know the little reason that trumps everything? Everything I believe in fails. Even you. His cold intensity is frightening, cutting through the scene. Mary steps away. Leo tries to fix it. LEO I-Im sorry. MARY Just leave me alone.

12.

Mary turns and walks away, stripping off the hoodie and throwing it on the ground. EXT. DOWNTOWN AUSTIN - DAY Leo wanders downtown, feeling alone. He pulls out his phone, plugs in his earphones and watches: A VIDEO OF MARY PLAYS. He closes his eyes. MARY (V.O.) Today was hard. I went to Zilker to clear my head and center myself. Theres a big rock in the middle where I can sit and just digest the day. I think it worked. But I still thought about you. EXT. ZILKER PARK - SUNSET Zilker Park in the evening. Orange and amber across the sky. People flying kites, throwing frisbee. Atop a rock is Mary, sitting, holding her legs tight to her chest, as she watches the sun set. Leo comes behind her, and sits next to her. Mary stares straight ahead. LEO Hey. Nothing. LEO I dont know what youre going to say, so Im just going to talk, alright? Deep breath. LEO There are some things I was too chicken to ever tell you, that I wish I had. Listen, Im just some mook with a moleskine pad, a drinking problem and a lot of debt. Im probably never going to amount to anything close to being good enough for you. But take it from me. This, today, is nothing. Just a bump in the road. Your new era is still on the horizon. LEO (contd) better job, and make the haters all regret the day they wrote you off. And as a guy who knows a thing or two about defeats, you can take that to the bank. I do believe in you. It wont be long until youre on top. Until then, Mary. Leo kisses her on the cheek, hops off of the rock, and starts walking away. MARY (O.S.) Leo. Leo stops, and turns his head back to her. Shes smiling as she wipes tears. MARY I need a ride home. EXT. HOUSE, INT. CAR - NIGHT Mary and Leo pull up to Marys house. They get out of the car. LEO Here we are. Mary is puzzled. The two of them look at the house while a PAIR OF HEADLIGHTS pull into the drive next to them. MARY But...but I dont live here. Leo gazes into her eyes one last time. MARY (O.S.) LEO??? Leo turns to see a five-years-older MARY COUGHLIN (25, professional) approach him. He looks back the other way--the younger Mary is GONE. He returns his attention to the very real, very angry Mary who stands before him. MARY (25) What are you doing here?

Leo gathers up a bit of courage and starts his speech from earlier. LEO ...There are some things I was too chicken to ever tell you, that I wish I had. Listen-MARY You shouldnt be here. Marys not game for another one of Leos speeches. LEO I just wanted to talk. MARY You had five years to speak up. LEO I know, but...I was a scared kid back then. And you were this beautiful woman with all the talent in the world...I knew it wasnt going to be long before you left me in your dust. Mary moves closer, challenging his presence. MARY So you thought youd break my heart to slow me down? It worked. In the span of 24 hours my world fell fucking apart. I lost my big fancy job...and my partner-in-crime. Same day. You want to know what I did after that? I cried. I cried, and I drank, and I hated you until it all turned into nothing. I lost friends. I lost time. And then, one morning, I woke up to a dirty apartment and a broken girl in the mirror and I realized you were never coming back. Heres the best part, though: I realized I was better off. Do you ever think about that? Do you ever even think what we could have been if you had even once said youre sorry? FLASH OF SHOTS of her smiling at him on the rock. It never happened.

LEO Sometimes. MARY All I ever wanted was for you to believe in me. Turns out I didnt need you after all. Mary begins to walk to her door. LEO Youre right. Im sorry I held you back. Im sorry I was what was wrong with your life. MARY No. You dont get to mean that much to me. Leo nods in resignation. LEO Goodbye, Mary. Leo closes the car door, turns the ignition and, after one last look out the window at Mary, he throws his hoodie in the back seat and leaves. INT. MARYS HOUSE - NIGHT Mary slings her bag onto the couch and puts her travel cup of coffee into the microwave to reheat. It DINGS finished and she takes it and sits down to her desk. She clicks on some music, and takes a gentle sip. Behind her, TWO ARMS come to rest on her shoulders, and begin massaging her neck. The comfort brings a kind expression to her face. A moment later, she touches the hand, and pulls the sleeve of Leos BLUE HOODIE up to her face, breathing it in once more.
