Student Issue 3 .Metepenagiag Community Newsletter August 2013 Chief & Council Update 1895 Settlement Agreement-Council is very excited to advise that on August 8. Chief Freeman Ward initialed off the 1895 land claim settlement agreement. If you are interested in positions at the Entertainment Center. We thank all those who have assisted by working on this file over the years.J Burke advised the target vote date will approximately the end of September or the beginning of October 2013. It’s estimated this will take a week or so. Once a date has been confirmed the notice to vote will be posted and the mail out packages will be prepared. Legal counsel T. Riverside Entertainment Center-Another success for our community is that after many submissions we are happy to announce that we have met the criteria to receive the building permit for the Entertainment Center!! We anticipate the construction will begin upon the completion of some minor paper work. The agreement has been accepted by Canada and legal counsel has advised we are now entering the final stages or the specific claim process. and a community meeting will be held.

Community Healing Garden At this time we would like to thank all those involved in The Community Healing Garden Project. Once the inventory is completed we will have a better understanding of the work that needs to be done on the houses in our community and ensure housing is distributed in a fair and equitable manner. rentals and roles & responsibilities of the committee. The garden is designed to be a peaceful environment to promote community unity. heart disease and other issues related to poor diet. If you have grown a garden this year and have extra please share with your neighbor and community elder!! Thank you all for making this year’s garden a success!! 5 .We will be adding some additional features to the garden once the 2nd garden crew begins. Please feel free to visit our garden.6111 and we will ensure if we have vegetables left that we will get them to your dinner table!! If you are in need and our garden crew hasn’t made it to you. We will take these lessons to improve on next year’s garden!! As the vegetables are harvested they will be distributed to Elders. this is a project that we will continue next year and with the communities participation it will be an annual activity. A notice will be posted once dates are secured. We will be harvesting the seeds from this years. Some of these ideas include signage. The garden was designed as a pilot project as a way to provide fresh vegetables to our community in an attempt to ensure that those with less have the ability to eat healthy and fight issues such as diabetes. We will be booking some community collective kitchen sessions for the fall in which we will share ways to preserve and prepare healthy menu choices. Many lessons we learned this first season. as well as teaching healthier lifestyle.
