(Lanka-e-News-14.Aug.2013, 11.00PM) The large crowds that attended the massive protest staged in Colombo this evening by Samagi Balavegaya against the killing of civilians by the Rajapakse regime using the forces went in a procession at the Fort defying even the court injunction order. The protestors who assembled near the Fort Railway station shouted slogans : Satakaya is Gathakaya ( one in shawl is the killer) Who and who did the shooting? Mahindaya did the shooting! Pannapiyaw Pannapiyaw (Chase them out chase them out )

Mahindaya pannapiyow ( chase out Mahinda). The protestors engaged in fierce demonstrations while Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe also participated in these demonstrations and garlanded a photograph of the student who was killed by Rajapakse murderers as a mark of commemoration. The grieving mother of the Roshen chanaka who was brutally killed too participated in the Katunayaka protest and garlanded her son’s photo. Ranil Wickremesinghe then displayed a blood stained white shirt that had been worn by the innocent student when he fell victim to the guns of the ruthless killers. A most significant feature of this massive protest was the participation of all races. Large number of Muslims and Tamils were among the milling crowds. They chanted slogans in Tamil. Wickremesinghe who addressed the protestors said , when workers protested peacefully against the plundering of employees’ funds ; when fishermen protested and when students agitated , all on justifiable grounds , they were shot at and killed . The last in the series is the killing of civilians when they protested demanding drinking water. The only way out of these cruelties is chasing out this brutal government lock, stock and barrel, and installing a Democratic government , he observed. Like how oxygen is necessary for the lives of the people , Democracy is necessary for politics . Irrespective of differences , all political parties must therefore unite in the name of Democracy, Wickremesinghe asserted. The criminal murder system must be eliminated , and under the new constitution the Democratic system should be strengthened. In the future a broad Front is envisaged , Wickremesinghe noted. Among the many political leaders who addressed the gathering were Dr. Wickremebahu and Siritunge Perera. The TNA M.P. Sumenthiran, addressed the gathering in Tamil. Tissa Attanayake, Ravi Karunanayake, Hemakumara Nanayakkara were also addressed the meeting. As always , Sajith Premadasa who talks out of turn and out of point related an out of place story ……. a President should be appointed via the UNP and towards that, steps must be taken beginning with the forthcoming elections. At that juncture , Actor Ranjan Ramanayake M. P. took over and changed Sajith’s out of place speech into a worthy speech suitable in the circumstances amidst huge applause from the people. Following the demonstrations, the protestors headed in a procession towards the

Presidential secretariat . In the vicinity of Hilton Hotel , police barriers blocked the procession with large number of police officers and members of the forces thronging the road and nearby overhead bridge .Water Bowsers too were in the ready. A heated dispute erupted between the protestors and the police , but with the intervention of the M.Ps , Tissa Attanayake, Mangala Samaraweera, Daya Gamage, Ravi Karunanayake, Ranjan Ramahayake, Ruwan Wijewardena, Ajith P Perera, Haren Fernando, Karu Jayasooriya, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Sujeewa Senasinghe, Harsha Perera, Rosi Senanayake and Sajith Premadasa who came forward on behalf of the people, the tension was defused. After the protestors staging demonstrations at the venue for about an hour , they peacefully dispersed. The protest demonstrations that began at about 2.00 p.m. went on a for a full 4 hours ending at about 6.00 p.m. The massive demonstrations created tremendous traffic congestion at the Fort .
