Kidney transplant patients are reminded to register with the Ministry of Health’s bulk purchase scheme at Jerusalem Road to have access to medication at a much cheaper price. Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma said registering would allow patients to buy expensive kidney transplant medications at a fraction of the cost. “Some people have undergone kidney transplant and are still getting their medications from overseas which costs them a lot of money since they have to pay VAT and freight charges as well.

Drugs Available At Cheaper Price: Govt Provides 2014 Budget Date Health Minister
“But if they register with us then the ministry through its bulk purchase scheme will purchase these medications in bulk which eventually means the price will go down significantly,” Dr Sharma said. So far only 13 people have registered with the scheme. Medications available with the bulk purchase scheme include Tacrolimus Capsules 1mg which is available at $1.77c unit price, Mycophenolate Meofetil 500mg tablets at $0.66 unit price and Cyclosporine Capsules 100mg at $2.68 unit price. The 2014 budget announcement will be made on November 8, confirms Fiji’s Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary Filimone Waqabaca. Waqabaca said they were able to finalise the date following the approval from cabinet. In the meantime, he said they are awaiting submissions from all government ministries and departments. “We have held discussions with all government ministries regarding the budget framework,” Waqabaca said. “And now they are formulating their budget for 2014 and we should be receiving those by the end of this

Bureau Notes Changes
The average annual rate of inflation for the 12 months to July this year stood at 2.7 per cent compared to 1.9 per cent on the comparable month for last year. And according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics for last month, the consumer price index for all items in registered a decrease of 0.2 per cent. Government statistician Epeli Waqavonovono said the consumer price index covered price changes in the urban areas in Suva, Lami, Nasinu, Nausori, Lautoka, Nadi, Ba and Labasa. He said a 0.6 per cent decrease was recorded for fruits and vegetables, confectioneries and other food products. Non-alcoholic beverages also experienced some price decreases with coffee and tea. For clothing and footwear, a 1.2 per cent decrease was recorded, 0.7 per cent for housing, water, electricity, gas and other utilities. "A 0.9 per cent decrease on the price was recorded for some new and second-hand clothes and fuel." Mr Waqavonovono said lower prices were also recorded for audio visual and personal care items. However, price increases were recorded for alcoholic beverage, cigarettes and yaqona, prescribed medicines and mobile phones. "Price changes were recorded for furnishing household equipment and routine household maintenance but they were balanced out," he said. He said no price change was recorded for restaurants and hotels.

week.” Waqabaca said the government will also hold sessions with those in the private sectors to meet with the Prime Minister, Attorney General and other government officers. ”This is an opportunity given for those in the private sectors to share their experiences and inform government officials of what they would like to see in the next budget.” The public, he says, will also be invited to make their submissions. A notable inclusion of the 2014 budget will be the allocation of funds for the planned September elections.

Help For Exporters
DOING business is not always easy especially with the increase in costs but the Fiji Export Council (FEC) says it is assisting small and medium enterprises to work smarter and within their means. This was possible after organizing a number of workshops on finance, marketing and packaging. FEC general manager Jone Cavubati said the two-day workshop, which ended on Tuesday, would assist small and medium enterprises to realise what their potential was. "We had the first phase of this program in May this year, and those that attended are now under a mentoring program which will continue for the next few months," he said. "The goal of the program is to upskill potential companies with the basic business requirements to enable them to join the exporting program as a contributing participant. "Some of these people are already exporting and are looking for new innovative ways to access new markets. For this workshop, it provided some marketing, a little bit of financing, goalsetting and acquiring knowledge on business development, how to improve and grow their business and participate effectively in terms of export." Eventually, he said they would learn about establishing a solid business and export plan as well as easy access to finance. "For most of these small operators, if they want to grow they will need this entire business plan to help them with their finance," he said. He said the workshop was different from others because it effectively monitored the progress of the participants after trainings by the trainer, Warwick McCormak. With the follow-up workshops this year by Mr McCormak, he said some of the enterprises managed to achieve about 80-90 per cent of their aim. "Team work is very important for an organisation with the right people for the right job." During the opening in Suva, Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation CEO Nesbitt Hazelman spoke on the importance of using the services of business councils in terms of loan or accessing business development funds.

Homeowner Benefits From Health Insurance Cover
A homeowner of Navosai subdivision in Nasinu left for India for open heart surgery under the Housing Authority's health insurance cover. Housing Authority chief executive officer Alipate Naiorosui said the health insurance policy was introduced in 2008 as a result of noting an increase in the number of cardiac and cancer cases among their homeowners. Appal Sami bought a piece of land in 2004 and slowly built a 3 bedroom home for his family. Currently 4,200 home owners are covered under the Housing Authority’s mortgage protection insurance policy which comes into effect in the event of the customers death and or total permanent disability. The cover ensures that the surviving family are freed from any debt because the policy settles the remaining balance on the home loan account. Under the health insurance cover, if a Housing Authority home owner is diagnosed with a cardiac condition or cancer, the insurance company requires a second medical opinion to verify the diagnosis. Upon meeting these conditions, Housing Authority is able to provide its customers, who are covered under the policy, with medical treatment in India. “The health insurance covers the visa application, return airfares, accommodation, meals, treatment and also covers the cost of sending a support person or spouse. In critical cases, Housing Authority is also able to send a medical practitioner to accompany the homeowner,” Naiorosui added. Since the launch of the health insurance policy in 2008, 22 homeowners have been sent to India for cardiac and cancer treatment and have successfully returned back to Fiji. Of this, 19 homeowners were sent for cardiac related treatment and 3 homeowners were sent for cancer treatment.

Mining Reports $9.9B Loss
Newcrest Mining Ltd has reported an annual net loss of $A5.78billion ($F9.93b) for the 12 months to June 30. The company's financial report released to the market on Monday said the loss resulted from a plunge in the gold price, lower production and massive write downs of $A6.23b ($F10.70b). It reported an underlying profit of $A451million ($F774.9m), less than half of the $A1.08b ($F1.85b) figure posted last year. Lower-thanplanned production at its Lihir and Gosowong projects in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia also affected the result. The miner has not paid a final dividend, which it said was due to its reduced income. All of Newcrest's key performance metrics were lower and its underlying profit was below consensus analysts' expectations for $A485m ($F833.15m). Operating cash flow was down more than $A1b ($F1.71b) to $A707m ($F1.21b) and sales revenue was down 14.5 per cent.
