Marbel NHS sustains Brigada Eskwela initiative

by Janelle Palope
Brigada Eskwela has been an institutionalized practice of MarbelNHS since its conception by DepED several years ago. Leading the implementation is Mr. Ricky Dalida, school principal together with the teachers, students, parents, and other stakeholders like the Local Government Unit of Matalam through the leadership of Hon. Mayor Oscar Valdevieso. These stakeholders put their best foot forward in the successful implementation of annual Brigada Eskwela or the Schools Maintenance Week that prepares the school for the new school year. Parents give their share by helping in the general clean-up of the school. It can be recalled that during Brigada Eskwela 2011, LGU Matalam extended support in terms of construction materials amounting to forty thousand pesos (PhP40,000). The donated materials were used for the partial completion of admin building and some minor repairs of learning facilities and beautification of the campus.

The internet superhighway is known to be the electronic road for freedom of expression. Many had even thought of it as a source of many positive and negative publicity either political or entertainment. People refer to the internet to mingle with friends when they have less time to actually meet them. Now, its security and freedom is threatened by the so called cybercrime law created to protect figures of making it just a small passage to enjoy. Though, there are still chances to widen its way for as of today it is suspended for further studies and analysis. The suspension of the said law purely is a blessing to media and people who wish to enjoy the freedom of expression most specially on political matters that also affect their lives. Every citizen of this country has the right to speak their mind responsibly and have the right to know what is going on in society in the convenience of the internet. Making such law is a violation to freedom of expression. Furthermore, this law will limit the thoughts of young people to commit themselves to society. The law had made many young people anxious for somehow this wide road that keeps them connected to society making them responsible individuals and free from the walls that imprisoned their thought is created to protect the self interest of politicians. Thanks its suspended.

MaKaKiLa SSTARA gets ready for Testimonial Program and Party in honor of Mrs. Jovita S. Salvatierra
By Fritzi Juls Sanglitan MaKaKiLa (MArbelKAbulacan-KIbia-LAmpayan) Secondary School Teachers, Administrators and Retirees Association will tender a Testimonial Program and Retirement Party in honor of Mrs. Jovita Sebastian Salvatierra, mathematics teacher and school cashier of Marbel NHS for more than 15 fruitful years. Mommy, as she is fondly called by her colleagues, will be on forced retirement effective May 14. But the grand event for the honoree will happen sometime in August 2013. Mommy was born on the beautiful day of May 13, 1948 in Brgy. Katidtuan, Kabacan, Cotabato. She is the 6th of the nine (9) children blessed of Mr. Pedro Camillo Sebastian and Mrs. Maria Alagano Miranda. She completed her elementary education at Katidtuan Elementary school, Kabacan, Cotabato in the year 1962. Motivated by her desire to continue her quest for success, she then pursued her secondary education at the University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, Cotabato where she graduated in the year 1966. Because of her desire to have a better education and possibly have a better career in the future, she enrolled at Central Mindanao Colleges where she took up Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education. She earned her where she taught for 15 years. On March 1995, she retired from the ser-

degree in the fruitful year of 1971. After her graduation in college, she took the Professional Board Exam for Teachers and through the help of the Almighty Father, she has passed the exam. That is the reason why in June 1971, she became a teacher in Green Academy located in San Vicente, Makilala, Cotabato. After a year of teaching in the said school, she transferred to Central Mindanao Colleges as an instructor. She taught for one year there. After that, she transferred again to Amas Barangay High School in Amas Kidapawan City where she worked as a Teacher-inCharge from June 1973 to October 25, 1981. A day after that, she was transferred to the main school which is the Kidapawan City National High School

vice because of illness. Because of her desire to go back to teaching profession, she once again applied as a classroom teacher in Matalam High School. God is good to her because she was hired and was deployed to Matalam High School Annex in Barangay Marbel, Matalam, Cotabato. She became a faculty member of the school from August 18, 1997 to November 15, 2005. When the school became separated from Matalam High School and was given the name Marbel National High School, Maam Salvatierra or Mommy was still a part of it until her last day of service as a government employee on May 13, 2013. Mommy is not an ordinary teacher. She is a multi-awarded individual in the field of teaching profession. She has a lot of awards and accomplishments while in service. arbel NHS is an institution of many good and talented teachers. Recently, there is one who has been added in the list. MNHS proudly presents its new teacher for this school year 2010-2011. Lets start knowing her. This new mentor has been hired to replace Mr. Altemore Maguate who transferred to Matalam High School (Poblacion). She was born on January 21, 1980 and presently residing at Manuel Roxas St., Poblacion Antipas, Cotabato. She was married to Mr. Francois Canon who is connected with Sumifru Banana Plantation.

Panlipunan IV and as first year -A adviser. She was also designated as Girls Scout adviser. When asked what kind of person she likes to be with, she had this to say: I love friends who are honest, loyal and Godfearing. I dont like people who are arrogant and senseless. What can she say about her new colleagues? She said that Marbel NHS teachers are impressive because they are friendly, approachable and can be relied on in terms of problems. She also said that MarbelNHS is a challenging school because she has not experienced in other schools she has been to the kind of challenge she has been looking for. This mentor believes that if you want to succeed you must have three important things. First, the pocket to finance all the things you need; second, the head to know and find your weaknesses and strength, to apply and choose the correct and accurate decisions and third, the determination that acts as the battery or the right way to finish your goals. What an explosive point of view! Is it because shes a canon? Maybe, but truly shes the canon that Marbel NHS needs. She is Araceli P. Canon, a young breed of mentor willing to serve in the name of educational enhancement and academic excellence of Marbel NHS.

Do we need to add up more year for basic education? Is this a solution to Philippine educational needs? An additional burden for parents? The Department of Education has been bombarded with such but surely this system of education will make a great difference. From the very beginning of this program many questions had been raised: How would it help the economy of the country? How could it help in improving the performance of the students? and the biggest question is: Can the Filipino people afford it? The debate of the pros and antis had reverberated in the ears of teachers all over the country asking why do we need such program while the truth always could be seen that the country has the most numbers of English speaking people in Asia and that we don't need additional years to spend more money. Perhaps its a lot expensive to have the K+12 working, but the Department of Education surely had thought of the future benefits of the students in the country to where the secondary schools offering livelihood subjects that will enable the students to have better chances of going to higher education using the skills they acquire in the secondary through business and livelihood opportunities. The idea to lengthen the basic education in the country is not something new. In fact, an attempt was made in 1925 to solve the educational inadequacy of the basic education program of the country but was not approved due to the huge amount of money needed for the said proposal. Another attempt to add up more years in basic education happened in 2004 under Former president Arroyo administration but not a success. This is idea to add two years more to basic education is not anymore a new idea. The responses of the public are also not very new.
There seem to be haunting truths engulfing DepEd and they should take these as challenges. Irrefutably, the country really needs to cope with the advancing educational system of other countries and hopes to produce graduates who can help in gearing up the countrys economy. Lets give this breakthrough in Philippine Education a chance to prove its worth. We cannot expect return of investment in just a wink of an eye. What we can do is to give our all-out support so we can truly get what we all expect: a good return of investment for our country, for our economy.

She finished her college education at USM, major in Biology in 2001 as cum laude. After graduation, she was determined to look for a job to help her family and so she jumped at the chance of applying as Magtutudlo sa Barangay of the Provincial Government of Cotabato and was assigned at Malire National High School where she had taught for three years. With fervent prayers, she got a permanent post at Marbel NHS in the year 2005 where she was deployed to teach at Agustin Valdevieso Sr. Memorial High School. There, she spent five years teaching Biology subject. But due to inevitable circumstance, she was temporarily transferred to Kabacan National High School in Osias Annex, Kabacan Cotabato where she taught for only three months. But now, she has finally found her real home, Marbel NHS. Presently, she is teaching Science I, Values Education III, Araling

By Ricky Aguirre Dalida Principal I Marbel National High School Marbel, Matalam, 9406 Cotabato Province Marbel National High School is legislated school in Cotabato Province, specifically in Barangay Marbel of the Municipality of Matalam established in 1996. Marbel is a community of Muslim and Christians, majority of which are Maguindanaons and Ilocanos. Before GEM and its education projects came to our school, we had low achievement rate and a high dropout rate. We didnt have a library, multimedia equipment, computers or an internet connection. Students and teachers either had low or zero knowledge on ICT. We never had NGO support. In 2004, GEMs Computer Literacy and Internet Connection or the CLIC Project came to our school. For the first time that year, the students and the teachers experienced the thrill of using computers and the internet. The following year, I took a bold step of offering Computer Education as a separate subject to all year levels with just five computers from CLIC Project. This became an institutionalized initiative as curriculum enrichment. Also in 2004, Marbel NHSs PTA jumped at the chance of applying for a grant from the Education Awareness and Support Effort-Matching Grant or EASE Project, which is now called the Education Matching Grant of GEM. Through this grant, we were able to establish a mini-library utilizing of the 7X8 sq. m. classroom. The PTA purchased a TV and GEM provided an overhead projector and a DVD player. This was the first approved MGP of Marbel National High School. After the first approved MGP activity, the Marbel NHSPTA has successively submitted and supported one grant proposal after another. These include the upgrade of the computer laboratory, the acquisition of multi-media equipment, an LCD projector with projector screen, a wireless router, a printer, and other computer accessories. In July 2009, the EMG Project and the PTA shared the cost for one-time installation of internet equipment. Without the Education Matching Grant Project, the school would not have been able to sustain its internet connection since the equipment installation was too expensive for the PTA to shoulder alone. Thanks to the Education Matching Grant Project, our school is still connected to the internet. Through GEMs Education Matching Grants intervention, we have become polished. GEM has made us glow. For the record: 1. We have improved academic performance; 2. We have enriched the general curriculum by adding computer education as a separate subject; 3. We have made teaching and learning interactive with the use of the net and multimedia equipment; 4. We have established review sessions in preparation for NAT, NCAE, and other tests employing multi-media equipment like the LCD projector; 5. We have access to the websites that offer free review materials as well as teaching and learning materials; 6. We won in the ICT quiz during the Division Level STEP Skills Competition, SY 2009-2010; 7. Students already have access to library materials especially in doing academic assignments that require reference books like home reading reports or book reports; 8. Teachers are generally more computer literate; 9. I, as the school head, have successfully completed the on-line scholarship of SEAMEO-Innotechs iFLEX on Instructional and Curricular Excellence in School Leadership and Management for Southeast Asia (ICEXCELS) with former OICARD Allan Farnazo as our on-line tutor purely done in Marbel National High School; 10. USAID-GEM is the only NGO that supported Marbel National High School and made it into one of the marvellous schools in Region XII; 11. The school has gained greater support from the PTA because of EMG Project. The PTA has felt the presence of GEM in Marbel National High School because we have all witnessed how the school has improved and the children benefitted from these blessings; 12. Our graduates are equipped with ICT knowledge and skills and mostly are ready for advanced ICT learning in college. In fact, many of them have taken ICT-related courses; What now after GEM? (We hope it wont end so soon. We hope it will be extended for more years. We still need GEM). In case, GEM will be gone, we will keep its glitter 1. by sustaining connection to the internet either through DepEDs DCIP (which Marbel NHS is fervently hoping to receive this year) or through other fundraising initiatives; 2. by continuing to provide learners with quality education that is enriched by the experiences of ICT; 3. by maintaining proper care and use of learning facilities provided by USAIDGEM; and 4. by keeping the pride ever alive of being a recipient of USAID-GEMs EMGP and CLIC and being forever grateful to USAID-GEM for all the assistance it has extended in making marvels for Marbel. Ladies and gentlemen, expressing our gratefulness to GEM in words would not be enough. However, let me just sincerely express it in behalf of the parents, students and teachers of Marbel National High School: Thank you very much. Maraming pong salamat, GEM at Education Matching Grant. Pagpalain kayo ng Panginoon. Mabuhay po kayo! You truly have made marvels in Marbel. (This is a speech delivered by principal Ricky A. Dalida during the celebration of 1100 Education Matching Grants held at Sun City Suites, General Santos City.)

On winning many lifes battles

By Marvelous

Rasid Angeles- Thats A bdul how he is known to his family and friends. He was born on August 10, 1983 among the eight children of Mr. Sammy N. Angeles, a driver, and Mrs. Normina S. Angeles, a housekeeper. To help his family and to live decently have been his dreams ever since. Making ways to make them come true with faith in the great Allah is his mission. He finished his elementary education at Galut, Sultan Mastura, Cotabato city. With the help of Allah, he graduated as first honor. Since then, he always dreamed of learning chess. He could still remember how fascination drove him whenever he watched players and their moves. At that time he told himself, someday Ill be one of them. He was in first year high school at Sultan Kudarat Municipal high school when he became sickly. He thought he could not finish that school year. But, belief in Allah makes all the possibilities. With prayers he managed to continue freshmen year. Later, his family moved to Marbel, the reason why his academic life was also transferred here. He was in second year high school when he started playing chess. He really was learning it. His father was his mentor. As a starter, countless times he did beat him. It was really challenging. Because of this, he became more determined to learn playing chess and beat his mentor. Through constant practice, his goal was attained. There it was! He beat his mentor, not once but every time they played. Intramural came. New to real competition he didnt join. It was in his junior year that he decided to test his newly discovered skill. Gladly his very first attempt in this kind of competition brought him to the district meet to represent Marbel National High School. On that competition he thought he was going to bag the 1 st prize since he already beat the star player of Matalam. Thinking that way he didnt spend too much attention on his co-player that made him lost the game. He landed on the 3rd place. The good thing that taught him from this experience is to never take things for granted. Always give the best till the end. Another thing he learned in chess is to sacrifice. He was in 4th year then when he joined a tournament in Mlang, North Cotabato. On the actual game he couldnt make up his mind. It was so hard to decide whether to sacrifice a move or not. It was only faith that he cling to. As a result, he made it to top 3 and Alhamdulillah! they had the same score (4.5). From then on, he realized that sacrifice is the key to success and that became his lifes motto. Another achievement he had during that time was graduating from high school with flying colors. His passion to playing chess had not ended when he pursued his tertiary education at USM, Kabacan, Cotabato. While taking up BS in Agriculture Business, he also gave time to his extracurricular life as a Varsity player in chess. With great faith in Allah he along with his colleagues, would often times romp away the championship trophy in every competition.

In 2002, a tournament sponsored by former Gov. Manny Pinol knocked. It was an open tournament. Varsity, even Palarong Pambansa players joined in on that prestigious event. Of the 200 players, only those who could make it to top 10 would be brought to Manila. Unfortunately, he landed on the 11th place. But that didnt make him a pessimist. Of course, in every game, theres a winner and a loser but never a quitter. Inspired by this, he joined another tournament sponsored by the Mayor of Kabacan, a Mayors Cup Tournament on August 17-18, 2002. With great faith in Allah, he brought home the bacon. He was in 4th year college when an opportunity to study Basic Islamic Law for free in Baguio City knocked again. He decided to test his luck on the interview conducted in Cotabato City. Few months after, fortunately his name was included on the list. He considered this a rare opportunity that was up for grab. He jumped at this chance, left his degree at USM unfinished and flew to Baguio City. After two years of studying in Baguio City. The school had decided to send the top 10 performing students in Jakarta, Indonesia. Perhaps, it was Gods will that he would be one of those chosen few to continue the degree in Islamic Law on that foreign land. In Indonesia, his passion to play chess had not ceased. Last April 2010, he joined an International Chess Tournament of 300 players including masters and grandmasters who were coming from different parts of the globe. It was a great event and though he landed on the 40th place, his experience was in itself already a trophy. Another competition took place again last May 2010 and he grabbed it again. It was sponsored by a chess club in Jakarta. How grateful that day was! He never expected he would bag the 1 st prize. Alhamdulillah! This year, hed just come back for good from Indonesia. Yes. He already finished his degree. He left Indonesia with marvelous experiences and great life. At present, he is waiting for the result of his job application in Baguio City. Through the years, he journeyed through life full of surprises and great challenges. Irrefutably, these challenges may sometimes have weakened him but he just keeps his faith in God and never gives up his dreams. He makes failures as weapons to strive harder. As a religious leader says, A man is not finished when he is defeated. He is only finished when he decides to quit now.

MY PHILOSOPHY OF SUPERVISION

believe that supervision is my power let my people shine. Like the sun that shines brightly above a clear blue sky. I have to radiate what I can do best to my teachers. I believe that this can happen best though my skills in coaching and mentoring and many other good ways that can trigger them too shine in great splendor in all aspects of their professional life. I believe that I can bring out the best in them as a supervisor.

My Country
By Rico Enterone
A place so radiant and lovely Surrounded with Beautiful scenery My dear Philippines, how I adore thee, To the Filipino hearts, you always stay. You are composed of so many islands With hospitable and patriotic people You are known as pearl of orient seas Worthy to be loved and cherished. A country rich in natural resources With valleys, mountains, rivers, and lakes. A place created by our Creator For you, for me, and for all the Filipino people. Your beauty is indeed extraordinary I promise to take care of you everyday. I will engrave your wonderful name in my heart daily Because you are so precious to me

believe that the teachers are my business partners in making the business grow, gain profits and share together the joy of profit sharing. Profits would be in terms of quality performance outputs of every task assigned them to do. I believe I have to be the source of inspiration for all the teachers under my watch. I have to inspire them that they will consider teaching not as work, but as a calling. I have to radiate an inspiring disposition for them to always bring out the best in themselves to bring out the best in the students. Eventually, that best when sustained can turn into excellence in the entire school system.

By Hermina Imbong, Baraguer Salipada Trees are watered by love and care Planted everywhere Gives beauty and pleasure Bring fresh air and cool atmosphere Trees serve as nest for birds A place for them to live Provide shades to animals It brings harmony, comport and joy to every life Trees prevent floods and landslides We should grow like trees Strong but gentle Despite trials and calamities Stand tall and be proud Let us plant trees in our heart Making things useful Building houses of good relationship Bringing water of great memories into our branches Trees, Trees be my guide Let my world be reach by your roots Let our lives be like yours Trees cure our hearts

believe that teachers should not stagnate in their professional life. I should not allow them to be static but to be always creative, innovative and result-oriented. I believe that they have the power to soar high or even higher than what eagles are able to reach. This I can do if I give the best of myself for them. I cannot reach what I aim for if I do it all alone by myself. I have to soar with them, lead them towards a common direction of doing the best and making the best in education happen* especially for our learners.

believe that we have all the capacity to be the best and this is through my nurturing supervision.

Tell me
By: Fritzie Juls Sanglitan
Tell me if what should I do Tell me what is in you Because every time I saw you My heart beats fast you know? I cant resist to hide my feelings, To someone who is always in my dream How I wish I could see you again, To ease my burdens. This time I want you to know, That deep in my heart, I am thinking of you. Now tell me, how could I forget you, Because I think Im in love with you. Days, months and years have passed and I wanted to forget you. But I could not do so........... Now, tell me what should I do? Tell me, what is in you that I cant forget you?

inally, I believe that my supervision can and should always bring all voices together to blend into one as we all say, Go for the best, be the best** *philosophy slogan/motto of MarbelNHS ** philosophical motto of COSUCECO

The funding came from various sources such as Search for Mr. and Miss SSG and Peso for a Cause. Last February, Mrs. Magoncia made it a point to start the construction of the SSG Building using the money that was generated from two fund-raising activities. The amount donated by Jerald Verdadero and Merly Ambrocio also helped in the completion of the project. . In an interview, one student said, The fund raising is a very big help for us to be able to build the SSG Building. We, the officers of SSG and also our adviser Maam Carmencita Magoncia are very thankful to those kind-hearted people who have helped us financially, James Escudero added. We finally have a home. This new office is for all student leaders and members as well who have concern as regards policies that SSG is trying enforce. SPORTS EDITORIAL
Life Through Sports
was a line that I heard from a person I barely knew when I was little. When you think about it, you would say it got a point. Sports does make important impact in the lives of many, even to children who play by the rules in every game thought them a lot in life. Going in sports would just be for fun for some but the health benefits that comes with it is so serious that it could extend more years in peoples lives. Winning on such would even boost self-esteem, develop leadership potentials and better relationships. Life is a pure challenge and so we come up with sports to live out this test through endurance and stamina in facing the realities of the game called life. Young people who face the fact of life with its difficulties along with getting themselves into sports likely to finish their studies, do not get pregnant early and away from depression and anxiety. One of the reasons why other people get into sports is that the spirit of friendship between your coteammates and coaches become stronger as if you treat each other as a family. Life without a family is empty and so life without getting engaged into sports is merely blank. Winning the games in life is just like winning a certain event with the cooperation of each members, whatever the result will be everybody is responsible. Life has its ups and downs, also sports has it. Experiencing defeat would make other people quit. But always remember quitting is a sign of being weak. Many issues that would tend to discourage players . One of which is the issue of poor coaching, we might say that there are people that are difficult to coach but it depends on the coach strategies to overcome such problem. Engaging into sports activity in school is a training ground for us to develop our young minds to be ready to the challenging world that awaits us in the future. Being able to learn new techniques and strategies could be of great help in winning the game called LIFE. Whatever our motivation is it should be for our good and for the others. Striving to bring home the bacon would be a great motivation for us to strive our best in everything we do. Nevertheless, experience and friendship would be a better goal when you play. Playing sport games is not just winning the game but winning the heart of every people we met. Being fair to our opponents is the great value that we need to have. Life is not about competing to win but also being fair and honest to those people we value the most and so with sports, its not about winning, its about how we play the game. In conclusion, the right game for young people like us is within our hearts, young people need to do is listen and feel the passion that is inside.
