Drew Barnes MLA for Cypress – Medicine Hat

August 22, 2013 Honourable Doug Griffiths Minister of Municipal Affairs 104 Legislature Building 10800 – 97 Avenue Edmonton, AB T5K 2B6 Dear Honourable Minister Griffiths: I am writing to express my concerns and offer some recommendations as the Disaster Recovery Program processes claims coming out of the 2013 floods of Southern Alberta. In 2010, residents within my constituency of Cypress-Medicine Hat were dealing with the aftermath of major flooding. My concerns for the victims of this year’s floods arise from the fact that I continue to work on behalf of quite a few of the victims of the 2010 flooding, trying to settle their claims with the DRP. A full three years after the fact, my staff and I are still struggling for clarification and settlement for these people. The hassle, frustration, and waiting have become too much for some families, and now even more individuals have since given up on the Alberta Government for help. This is not acceptable. I request that you offer an explanation for why LandLink Consulting used Alberta Government letterhead in correspondence with local residents. Residents also want to know how LandLink exceeded the maximum of $20 million and received an additional $6.5 million, and why the request for proposal was confined to such narrow terms in the first place. With the amount of public money being spent on disaster recovery, it is imperative that Albertans have transparency when it comes to governmental contracts and spending efficiently. Coming out of those experiences I call on you to ensure:  The Government will act on claims efficiently and in a timely manner.

Consultants and adjusters will not be asked to deal with claims without proper governmental authority to act on them, for the sake of both homeowners and taxpayers. The rules will be made clear to everyone involved. Contracts regarding disaster recovery are made transparent and that taxpayer money is being spent judiciously. To these ends, the DRP will be open and willing to work with local MLA’s in the best interests and for the best results for the affected residents.

Let’s not still be working to settle claims from the 2013 floods in the year 2016.

Sincerely,

Drew Barnes, MLA Cypress-Medicine Hat
