FADE IN:
EXT. TERRA NOVA COLONY – DAY
OWEN – a thirteen year-old boy with messy brown hair and
tanned skin - sits atop a storage container, alone,
watching the stars fade as the sun rises.
He wears a white jumpsuit decked out with techno doodads,
but no helmet or heavy space suit required.
At his back stands an expansive space colony, made of a
clean, white, pseudo-plastic material.
Beyond the colony, it’s a sea of rock, isolated geological
formations littering the landscape.
Far off in the distance, massive towers stretch up into the
sky, half white, half green.
Owen gets to his feet and walks towards the colony.
INT. COLONY CORRIDOR – DAY
Owen shuffles along the cylindrical corridor, passing
various men and women, a child in a world of adults.
INT. COLONY LIVING QUARTERS – DAY
The living quarters are pristine, colorless.
Owen enters via sliding door. He finds his parents, MR. and
MRS. ADAMSON, jumpsuited up and preparing for the day.
MRS. ADAMSON
Morning, Owen. You’re up early.
OWEN
Couldn’t sleep.
MRS. ADAMSON
Been anywhere in particular?
OWEN
Not really.

!2
MR. ADAMSON
Want to help me with the biogennies today?
OWEN
No, that’s okay. Could I, maybe,
take the rover out? I’ve done all
my homework. For the week.
Mr. and Mrs. Adamson eye one another.
MRS. ADAMSON
Going to stay out of trouble?
OWEN
I’m the only kid on this rock. Not
much trouble to get into.
Owen’s parents wait for the correct answer.
OWEN
But, yes, absolutely.
Mr. Adamson scratches his chin, playfully wary.
MR. ADAMSON
I dunno ...
Mr. Adamson taps a nearby touch panel.
MR. ADAMSON
Rover’s activated.
MRS. ADAMSON
But be careful.
OWEN
Uh huh, I will.
Owen hugs his parents briefly.
OWEN
Later.
MRS. ADAMSON
Sooner, rather than later, Owen.

!3

INT. ROVER HANGAR – DAY
Owen enters the hangar. Dozens of rovers - bulbous,
wheelless vehicles with open cockpits - sit waiting.
INT. ROVER – DAY
Owen hops into one of the rovers. It powers on
automatically, displays lighting up, engine humming. The
rover hovers a few feet off the ground.
Owen taps at the controls, grips the steering. He grins.
EXT. ROVER HANGAR – DAY
The rover shoots out of the hangar, skimming above the
ground, Owen hooting with excitement.
EXT. TERRA NOVA DESERT – DAY
Owen sweeps back and forth along the rocky surface of Terra
Nova, rover banking side to side.
INT. ROVER – DAY
The wind kicks Owen’s hair back. A smile is ear to ear.
EXT. TERRA NOVA DESERT – DAY
The rover hugs the ground, leaving the colony behind. Owen
pushes the rover faster.
EXT. TERRA NOVA ORBIT – SPACE
Terra Nova - blue oceans, caramel rocky wastelands, traces
of green - spins lazily.
A dark metallic object hurtles towards the planet.
INT. COLONY COMMUNICATION CENTER – DAY
A dozen people mind various displays. The communications
officers all appear on the verge of boredom-induced comas.
One of the displays begins to beep.

!4

EXT. TERRA NOVA DESERT – DAY
Owen speeds across the desert.
INT. ROVER – DAY
Something catches Owen’s attention. He looks up. High
above, a metallic streak heads towards the desert.
INT. COLONY COMMUNICATION CENTER – DAY
One of the officers cranes his neck towards the beeping and
flashing display in front of him.
INT. ROVER – DAY
Owen eases up on the rover.
EXT. TERRA NOVA SKY – DAY
The silvery shape plummets towards the desert below.
INT. ROVER – DAY
The rover comes to a stop, still hovering above the ground.
The object begins to change direction, arcing through the
sky ... until it’s headed straight for Owen.
INT. COLONY COMMUNICATION CENTER – DAY
The officer studies the display. Others crowd around.
The colony’s ADMINISTRATOR - an older woman with tight,
sharp features - leans in close, inspecting the screen.
OFFICER
Ma’am, we have a visitor.
INT. ROVER – DAY
Owen stares at the speeding object as it flies towards him,
now only a few hundred yards away.

!5
EXT. TERRA NOVA DESERT - DAY
The metallic blur reaches the planet surface, kicking up a
massive plume of dust that blows out in all directions.
But there’s no impact, no explosion.
INT. ROVER – DAY
Owen coughs, waves the dust away from his face. Slowly, the
sandy cloud begins to clear.
EXT. TERRA NOVA DESERT - DAY
Perched on the desert floor rests a very alien spaceship.
It’s dark silver, seamless, like a metallic manta ray,
adorned with faded markings and glyphs, dinged up and
scorched, and impossibly technologically advanced.
Owen gets out of the rover, takes a few tentative steps
towards the spaceship.
A hatch on the side of the ship opens. Stairs extend from
the doorway to the ground below. A silhouette appears.
Owen watches, anxious and spellbound.
And JOE - a young, wiry green alien, two arms, two legs,
yellow eyes, little dots for nostrils - steps out. A forest
of sort-of-tentacles sits on the top of his head like a mop
of hair. He wears an almost punk jumpsuit of his own.
Joe spots Owen. He waves casually, then skips down the
stairs and joins Owen.
Joe speaks, uttering a strange language of clicks and hums.
Owen stares at Joe, eyes wide and stupefied.
Joe cocks his head and speaks again. More gibberish.
Joe sighs heavily, rummages around the pockets of his
jumpsuit. He pulls out a thin disk the size of a quarter
and moves in towards Owen.
Owen back pedals awkwardly, but Joe grabs Owen by the elbow
and smacks the disk against Owen’s forehead.

!6

JOE
There we go.
OWEN
You ... speak ... English?
JOE
Huh? No, not a word. But I
understand you.
Joe taps the disk stuck to Owen’s forehead.
JOE
And now you can understand me.
Joe flops a hand onto Owen’s shoulder.
JOE
Name’s Jotrox’ungachuu. But you
can call me Joe, for short.
Owen places a tentative hand on Joe’s shoulder.
OWEN
Owen. Adamson.
JOE
Good to meet you, Owen. Adamson.
OWEN
Uh, no, just Owen.
JOE
Whatever you say.
Joe steps past Owen, taking in the desert.
OWEN
Wait, hold up. You’re an alien.
JOE
That is true.

!7
OWEN
No, I mean, you’re a real live
alien. Like, really real, in front
of me. And I’m talking to you.
JOE
Am I missing something?
OWEN
You exist! You’re out there!
Joe chews on this comment, the gears slow, but steady.
JOE
Wait, wait, you didn’t know that?
OWEN
Well, no!
JOE
How could you not know that?
OWEN
We just ... figured we were alone.
I mean, it’s not like we haven’t
been looking or anything, but JOE
You thought you were alone? Okay,
okay, come with me for a moment.
Joe grabs Owen and drags him into the spaceship.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DAY
Joe ushers Owen over to one of a handful of large seats
near the ship’s controls, then plops into the central
control chair beside Owen.
Joe’s fingers skitter above the controls. The ship rumbles.
JOE
Okay, just sit back ...

!8
EXT. TERRA NOVA DESERT – DAY
The spaceship’s stairs retract, and the hatch closes.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DAY
Joe takes a hold of the ship’s control sticks.
JOE
... and enjoy the ride.
OWEN
Ride? What ride?
EXT. TERRA NOVA DESERT – DAY
The spaceship lifts off the ground and, without even a hint
of acceleration, rockets spaceward.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DAY
Owen watches the tilted horizon of Terra Nova through the
bridge’s viewscreen.
OWEN
Where are we going?!
EXT. TERRA NOVA ORBIT – SPACE
The spaceship zooms away from Terra Nova.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – SPACE
Joe glances at Owen, grinning.
JOE
Owen Adamson, it is time to show
you the neighborhood.
EXT. TERRA NOVA ORBIT – SPACE
The ship speeds up, its form stretching off infinitely into
the cosmos. Then in a flash, it’s gone.

!9
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – HYPERSPACE
Stars, stretched out like taffy, streak by the spaceship.
Owen stands, stares at the viewscreen, eyes bulging.
OWEN
What are you doing? You’ve got to
take me back!
JOE
Of course I will.
OWEN
No, I mean now! Right now!
JOE
Now? Why? We just left.
OWEN
Because ...
Joe waits for an answer, but Owen doesn’t have one.
JOE
Owen, relax. Take a seat. It’s a
quick trip. Close by.
OWEN
Close by?!
JOE
Relatively speaking.
Owen holds his face in his hands, groaning, then slumps
back into his seat.
OWEN
Where are you taking me?
JOE
Now that is a good question.
Joe works the controls. On the viewscreen, the stars begin
to compress into their typical spherical shape.

!10
JOE
Owen, this EXT. JUMP RING – SPACE
The Jump Ring, a massive cylindrical space station a dozen
miles across, rotates in the dead of space.
Joe’s ship comes out of hyperspace.
JOE (V.O.)
- is a Jump Ring.
The hollow center of the Jump Ring shimmers like hot air
above pavement. It’s a wormhole, a window into another
point in the universe. Countless ships flow through it.
A vast, vibrant red-purple cloud of cosmic dust lingers all
around the station.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – SPACE
Owen stares at the Jump Ring.
OWEN
What is it?
JOE
I just told you, Jump Ring. Holds
the wormhole open.
OWEN
Wormhole?
JOE
Well you’re not going
intergalactic if you stick to
hyperspace, yeah?
OWEN
If you say so.
EXT. JUMP RING – SPACE
Joe’s silvery ship heads for the Ring.

!11
Another ship, closer to the station, turns and makes a
beeline for Joe’s vessel.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – SPACE
The second spacecraft rockets straight towards Joe’s ship,
then peels off moments before impact.
Owen shields his eyes. Joe shakes his head, chuckling.
ARALLA - a young alien girl with large eyes framed by
feathers and downy fur that fades from violet to white appears in a communication window on the viewscreen.
ARALLA
Jotrox!
The second ship comes back into view, now facing the boys.
JOE
Hey Aralla, you enjoy that?
ARALLA
Very much so.
Aralla spots Owen, gives Joe an inquisitive look.
ARALLA
Who’s your friend?
JOE
All in good time. You headed to
the Ring?
ARALLA
Of course.
JOE
See you there then.
ARALLA
Alright. Don’t keep us waiting.
The comm window blinks off. Aralla’s ship turns and zooms
towards the Jump Ring.

!12
JOE
You’re going to love this.
EXT. JUMP RING – SPACE
The two spaceships make their way towards the Jump Ring as
space traffic continues to courses through the wormhole.
EXT. JUMP RING - OUTER SURFACE - SPACE
Elevator shafts extend from the Jump Ring, connecting to
vessels that have docked ‘underneath’ the station.
The two ships manoeuvre towards a pair of free lifts.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – SPACE
Joe eyes the controls, then stands and marches away.
JOE
Follow me.
OWEN
Have I been abducted by an alien?
JOE
What?
OWEN
Nothing.
EXT. JUMP RING – SPACE
A dark, angular spaceship heads for the Jump Ring.
INT. PIRATE SCOUT SHIP COCKPIT - SPACE
The PIRATE SCOUT - a lanky, weaselly alien - pilots the
small space ship, his shifty eyes on the Jump Ring.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - UPPER HATCH – SPACE
Joe guides Owen into an airlock.
JOE
Hold on.

!13

Joe knocks on Owen’s head, knuckles surveying skull.
JOE
You got brain all in there, right?
Owen tries to shoo him off.
OWEN
Stop it!
Joe relocates the translator patch behind Owen’s ear,
hidden behind Owen’s hair.
JOE
Still work?
OWEN
Yeah.
Joe taps a control panel, and the airlock begins to close.
OWEN
Wait, Joe, should I know about
anything? Is it safe in there? Am
I going to be able to breathe?
JOE
If I can, you can.
INT. JUMP RING - LOWER LEVEL – SPACE
The Jump Ring is dark, smoky, dingy, busy, loud and alive,
crowded with a cornucopia of aliens.
Shops, services, entertainment, bars and restaurants are
crammed together in the Jump Ring.
A door connecting one of the Jump Ring’s outer lifts to the
bowels of the station opens, revealing Owen and Joe.
Owen holds his breath, cheeks bulging, eyes shut.
JOE
Owen, relax. This place is built
for double-O breathers like us.

!14

Joe slaps Owen on the back. The boy inhales raggedly. Joe
grabs Owen by the jumpsuit and drags him forward.
JOE
Come on, come on.
Joe walks past other lift doors, searching the crowds.
Aralla appears from behind a cluster of aliens. Joe and
Aralla spot each other and embrace jovially.
ARALLA
Hey Joe.
JOE
Aralla, good to see you.
Three other young aliens join Aralla.
KOBOR is a big, burly, gruff, hunched combination of
armadillo, rhino, and elephant.
TESSARACTA is an insectoid with four arms and four legs, a
cross between mantis and black widow, with a shiny, almost
bejewelled carapace and a regal crest of horns on her head.
And lastly, LOOTHU is a nervous, shifting mass of
tentacles, standing somewhat upright, his squid limbs
tangled together, imitating the shape of a biped.
Joe and the three other alien teens share typical hugs,
handshakes, greetings.
Owen stands a few feet back from the rest of the group.
ARALLA
So Joe, you going to introduce
this one or what?
JOE
Yeah, yeah, of course. Guys, this
is Owen. Owen, this is Kobor Kobor offers a grunt in acknowledgement.

!15
JOE
- Tessaracta TESSARACTA
Charmed.
JOE
And Loothu.
LOOTHU
Hello!
OWEN
Um ... hi.
ARALLA
Good to meet you, Owen.
Kobor walks over to Owen, looks him up and down, pokes him
in the forehead, arms, chest.
KOBOR
Seems kind of squishy.
LOOTHU
Nothing wrong with squishy.
ARALLA
I think he’s cute. Sort of plain
looking, but cute.
JOE
I met him on some dustbowl I was
surveying. Oh and get this: they
thought they were alone.
TESSARACTA
Alone where?
JOE
In the universe, I dunno.
A moment of silence, then the aliens burst into laughter.
Owen smiles weakly.

!16
ARALLA
We should show him the Inner Deck.
That’ll blow his mind.
Aralla waits for any disagreement, and receiving none,
leads the way.
INT. DR. VROON’S LABORATORY - SPACE
Monitors, cables, robotic arms and precision instruments
dangle from the walls and ceiling of the expansive room.
The lab is half auto body garage, half electronics plant.
DR. VROON - a diminutive, aged humanoid alien with wispy
white hair and a wrinkled face - hums to himself.
He moves to the center of the room, where a large metallic
box is in the process of sealing itself shut.
COMPUTER (V.O.)
Dr. Vroon, you have an incoming
communication from the Admiral.
DR. VROON
I’ll take it in here, thank you.
The GALACTIC SECURITY FORCE ADMIRAL appears on one of the
larger lab monitors, dressed in an authoritative black
uniform with red and blue stripes. He is a regal, angular
creature with determined, intelligent, but not unkind eyes.
ADMIRAL
Hello, Dr. Vroon.
DR. VROON
Admiral.
ADMIRAL
Is the prototype ready?
Dr. Vroon pats the metallic box.
DR. VROON
I believe so. But then you and I
both know not to get our hopes up
before a test run, don’t we now?

!17

A nod and a knowing smile from the Admiral.
ADMIRAL
I look forward to it.
The Admiral’s image blinks off.
INT. JUMP RING - LOWER LEVEL – SPACE
The Pirate Scout steps out of one of the lifts. His eyes,
sly and half-lidded, skip around the Jump Ring.
Though shifty, no one pays him any attention. The Scout
moves through the crowds, casing the joint.
A pair of slovenly Security officers walk by, dressed in
black uniforms similar to the Admiral’s.
The Scout watches the officers from the corner of his eye.
The officers stumble along, spending more time slapping
each other on the back than watching the crowds.
The Scout continues on.
INT. JUMP RING - MARKETPLACE - SPACE
The kids wind their way through a slightly more respectable
section of the Jump Ring.
Owen lags behind the others, his eyes everywhere, absorbing
the aliens, shops, architecture, cultures.
JOE
Still in a hurry to get back home?
OWEN
I ... wow.
The kids walk by rows of painted and polished hoverjets,
half motorcycles, half jet airplanes. Owen is drawn to
them, shuffles over like a zombie.
OWEN
Awesome.

!18

An alien SALESMAN saunters up.
SALESMAN
Pretty hot, huh son? And she’s the
easiest thing the world to ride.
The Salesman lifts Owen off his feet and plops him onto one
of the nearby hoverjets.
SALESMAN
Grab a control stick and you’re
locked in. Push to dive, pull to
climb, twist to turn. Right foot’s
go, left foot’s stop. Simple as
that. So how you payin’?
JOE
He’s not. Get off, get off!
Joe pulls Owen’s hands off the control sticks before
grabbing Owne’s jumpsuit and yanking him off the hoverjet.
The Salesman snorts at Joe as the kids shuffle on.
JOE
Can’t let ‘em rope you in like
that, Owen.
OWEN
So shiny.
OFFICER URKFURK - a pig-like alien in Security garb,
uniform straining at the seams - stumbles towards the kids.
KIDS
Hello, Officer Urkfurk!
Urkfurk spots the kids and groans.
OFFICER URKFURK
Shouldn’t you kids be in school?
Or working? Or stuck in a Nunalium
mine somewhere?

!19
JOE
Not happy to see us, Urkie?
OFFICER URKFURK
Don’t call me Urkie.
ARALLA
Still upset about that thing with
the bongledons?
OFFICER URKFURK
Do you have any idea how long it
took to clean that mess up?
The kids collectively shake their heads, all trying their
hardest not to smile or break into laughter.
OFFICER URKFURK
I’m not going have any trouble
with you kids today, am I?
KIDS
No, Officer Urkfurk.
OFFICER URKFURK
Going to have a nice, relaxing
shift for a change?
KIDS
Yes, Officer Urkfurk.
OFFICER URKFURK
Good. Get a move on. Go make
someone else’s life miserable.
Officer Urkfurk points at his eyes, then at Joe - “I’m
watching you” - before he shuffles off.
OWEN
Who was he?
JOE
Officer Urkfurk? Galactic Security
Force. But the guys out here
patrolling the Ring aren’t exactly
top of their class.

!20

LOOTHU
I like Officer Urkfurk.
KOBOR
You like everyone, squirmy.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Dr. Vroon pushes the metallic box, hovering above the
ground, through the throngs of alien creatures.
Ten feet away, the Scout continues his reconnaissance.
INT. JUMP RING - TEST CHAMBER - SPACE
The room is massive, bare metal walls. Makeshift platforms
and cage-like enclosures fill the space.
The Admiral nears a dozen alien technicians that hover over
a bank of monitors.
ADMIRAL
How are we looking, gentlemen?
TECHNICIAN
Good to go here, sir.
INT. JUMP RING - INNER DECK - SPACE
The Inner Deck of the Jump Ring encircles the innermost
part of the station, closest to its hollow, tubular center.
The ‘ceiling’ of the Inner Deck is a transparent material
that wraps around the inside of the Ring.
Ribbons of electricity wind around the inner circumference,
maintaining the wavering mouth of the wormhole.
Countless ships, from personal craft to freighter, pass
through the wormhole above.
The kids shuffle through the Inner Deck, with Owen in the
lead. His eyes are glued to the sights above, unblinking.

!21
OWEN
So many ships.
JOE
Well it’s a big place out there.
OWEN
It’s amazing.
Owen starts to laugh, can’t contain himself. He looks at
the others, and they smile back, Kobor included.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
The Scout gives his surroundings one last scan, then holds
a slender metallic device to his ear.
PIRATE SCOUT
Come on through.
INT. JUMP RING - INNER DECK - SPACE
Owen continues to stare spaceward at the incoming ships.
For the others, the moment has run its course.
ARALLA
Alright, let’s go.
All but Owen start to leave.
OWEN
Huh. Look at those ones.
EXT. JUMP RING WORMHOLE - SPACE
Scores of dark, imposing ships come through the wormhole.
Some are small fighter ships, zipping around erratically.
Others are hulking raider ships, steadily pushing forward.
A large, ominous command ship is at the center of the pack.
INT. JUMP RING - INNER DECK - SPACE
The shadowy ships fill the view above.

!22
JOE
Oh no.
LOOTHU
This is bad.
Other aliens look up. Panic fills the Inner Deck.
ARALLA
Back to the ships!
The kids are already running. Owen’s clueless.
KOBOR
Move it, new guy!
OWEN
What’s going on?
JOE
Pirates!
This doesn’t sink in. Joe gives Owen a frantic shove.
JOE
Go! Owen, run!
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Sirens sound. Aliens run around like terrified idiots.
The kids try to push through the crowds.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Security officers look amongst themselves, clueless.
INT. JUMP RING - TEST CHAMBER - SPACE
The Admiral and the technicians look up from the monitors,
drawn away by warning lights and sirens.
EXT. JUMP RING - SPACE
Pirate raider ships fan out towards the the Jump Ring.

!23
The massive command ship remains in the center, with the
small fighters buzzing around it.
INT. COMMAND SHIP - BRIDGE - SPACE
The bridge of the command ship is appropriately shadowfilled and foreboding.
Pirates man various stations. Multiple views of the Jump
Ring and raider ships fill an expansive viewscreen.
A robotic hand, attached to an as yet unseen figure, raps
its fingers against the armrest of a central command chair.
MALEONAS (V.O.)
Engage the drills.
EXT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIPS - SPACE
Large panels on the sides of the raiders ship pull back,
revealing gargantuan drill bits.
EXT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
The raider ships come to a stop in a circular formation
around the Terminus, the rim of the tubular Jump Ring.
EXT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - SPACE
The drills extend towards the Jump Ring.
INT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
A shrill metallic screeching fills the Jump Ring.
EXT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
The drill bits churn through the station’s exterior wall.
INT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
One of the drill bits punches through the exterior wall.

!24
INT. COMMAND SHIP - BRIDGE - SPACE
The command ship’s viewscreen shows all of the raider ships
in position, now attached to the Jump Ring Terminus.
MALEONAS (V.O.)
Begin boarding.
INT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
One of the drills splits apart, opening up like biomechanical flower. The drill shaft is a hollow tunnel.
Pirates - a wide range of alien species - charge out of the
tunnel and into the Jump Ring.
INT. JUMP RING - TEST CHAMBER - SPACE
A squadron of elite Security Commandos enter the test
chamber, heading straight for the Admiral.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Pirates begin to loot the Jump Ring, grabbing machines,
robots, anything of value.
They shoot laser guns wildly, more for show than effect. It
is utter chaos.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
In another section, pirates stick up helpless aliens for
their possessions, jewellery, equipment.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
The kids follow Aralla through the madhouse. Owen doesn’t
need to be told to keep up.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Dr. Vroon pushes the metal box through the crazed masses.
INT. JUMP RING - LOWER LEVEL – SPACE
Aliens push and shove, trying to get back to their ships.

!25

EXT. JUMP RING - SPACE
Civilian ships begin to flee the station.
INT. JUMP RING - TEST CHAMBER - SPACE
COMMANDER ROFOLO steps forward from the squad of Commandos.
ADMIRAL
Commander Rofolo?
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Security feed, sir.
Commander Rofolo hits a few buttons on his wristband, and a
large holographic display appears.
Pirates in different locations throughout the Jump Ring
flash on the display, cycling from one area to the next.
ADMIRAL
Pirates.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
The Security officers face off against the pirates. Both
sides take cover behind walls, pillars, overturned stands.
Both sides are horrible shots.
The pirate lasers are sleep rays. Once hit, Security
officers go limp, falling into unconscious clumps.
The Security lasers, meanwhile, are freeze rays, stunning
the pirates, locking them in place like living statues.
Dozens of officers pile up on the floor, snoring loudly.
Others hide behind their napping cadres.
The pirates similarly take advantage of their ‘fallen’
brothers, using those frozen in place as additional cover.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Aralla leads the kids through the crowds and the impromptu
war zone, pirates and Security zapping away at one another.

!26

A pack of pirates make their way towards the kids.
ARALLA
Get behind there!
The kids jump behind an overturned kiosk.
OWEN
Is this normal for you guys?!
JOE
What? No, no, of course not.
TESSARACTA
Truthfully, it is a little much.
The pirates move past, and the kids go unnoticed.
ARALLA
We’re good, keep moving!
INT. JUMP RING - HOVERJET SHOPS - SPACE
Pirates jump onto hoverjets, short them out with electrical
devices, and ride off, hooting and hollering like buffoons.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Aliens in dignified attire are surrounded by pirates.
PIRATE
Don’t you all look important.
INT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
Pirates pile stolen goods at the entrances to the tunnels
before rushing off into the Jump Ring for more.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Officer Urkfurk and a few of his Security buddies huddle
behind a random stall, pirate lasers zipping overhead.
One of the officers gets tagged. He collapses into a
snoring heap at Urkfurk’s feet. Urkfurk grumbles.

!27

EXT. PIRATE COMMAND SHIP - SPACE
A small shuttle detaches from the command ship and heads
towards the Jump Ring.
EXT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - SPACE
The shuttle docks with the upper area of the raider ship.
INT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
Out from one of the tunnels marches CAPTAIN MALEONAS. He is
lion-esque, his powerful mane flowing over utilitarian
pirate garb. A web of scars runs across one side of his
face, accompanying his robotic arm.
All nearby pirates face him and stand at the ready.
PIRATES
Captain Maleonas!
Maleonas looks around at the spoils, grinning, triumphant.
INT. JUMP RING - TEST CHAMBER - SPACE
The Admiral and Commander Rofolo continue to scan the
rotating security feed. It settles on Maleonas.
ADMIRAL
Maleonas. Where is this?
COMMANDER ROFOLO
The Jump Ring’s Terminus, sir.
ADMIRAL
Head there immediately. He doesn’t
get off the Ring. Understand?
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Yes, sir!
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
The kids weave through the crowds, leaving slumbering
Security officers and immobile pirates behind.

!28

INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Dr. Vroon hustles along, still pushing the hovering box.
A pair of pirates jump out ahead of him, then another
handful from behind. The group advances towards Dr. Vroon.
PIRATE
What have you got there?
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Pirates and Security still shoot at one another as the
Commandos arrive on the scene.
Commander Rofolo guides his squad, single file, guns
notched tight. They’re dead-eyes, picking off pirates left,
right and center - zap, zap zap!
Fifty paces back, a half dozen Commandos escort the Admiral
as he marches fearlessly through the Jump Ring.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
The Pirate Scout, hidden in the shadows, watches the
Commandos’ handiwork. He pulls out his communicator.
PIRATE SCOUT
We’ve got a problem.
INT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
Maleonas oversees the progress of the raid, looking over a
stolen techno item. Another pirate approaches.
PIRATE
Captain Maleonas, we’ve just got
word that the Security Admiral is
on his way.
MALEONAS
Still trying to catch me, Admiral?
(to pirate)
We’ll be long gone before he and
his reinforcements hyper in.

!29

PIRATE
No, sir ... he’s here already.
He’s on board the Ring.
MALEONAS
He’s here? Now?!
PIRATE
Yes, sir.
Maleonas stares at the spoils, clenches his robotic hand.
The techno equipment bursts into pieces.
MALEONAS
Order the retreat.
INT. JUMP RING - LOWER LEVEL – SPACE
The crowds have thinned. Laser fire echoes in the distance.
The kids appear, spot the lifts back down to their ships,
and explode with nervous laughter.
ARALLA
Joe, going to have to cut the
visit short, I’m afraid.
JOE
Yeah, yeah, totally with you.
Aralla, Kobor, Tessaracta, and Loothu are already on the
move as Owen and Joe reach the door to their lift.
Aralla’s group, a dozen doors down, offer perfunctory waves
before entering their lift. Owen and Joe do the same.
INT. JUMP RING - ELEVATOR LIFT - SPACE
Owen and Joe stand at the hatch that connects elevator lift
to ship. Joe punches away at a nearby console.
JOE
How’s that for your first trip to
a Jump Ring?

!30
OWEN
No comment.
JOE
Why isn’t this working? Wait,
what? Connector disengaged? They
took my ship. They took my ship!
Owen buries his face in his hands.
Joe runs his hands through his hair-tentacles, squeezes his
eyes shut, then grabs Owen by the jumpsuit.
INT. JUMP RING - LOWER LEVEL - SPACE
Joe exits the lift with Owen in tow.
JOE
We’ll have to catch a ride
with ...
Down the way, Aralla’s group has also reappeared. But now
they’re escorted by pirates.
Owen and Joe duck back into the entrance to their lift and
watch as their friends are hauled away.
Kobor shoves one of the pirates and sends him flying.
The other pirates laugh at their comrade, but raise their
laser guns to Kobor. Kobor stands down reluctantly.
Aralla, Kobor, Tessaracta and Loothu are led away.
Owen steps out from the lift.
JOE
Owen, where are you going?
Owen looks at Joe in disbelief.
OWEN
After your friends.

!31
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
The pirates are on the run, hauling booty, prisoners - and
some of their frozen coconspirators - with them.
INT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
Maleonas directs the pirates as they ferry their spoils
into the tunnels and onto one of the pirate ships.
Amongst the prisoners is Dr. Vroon. Amongst the booty, the
mysterious metallic box.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Aralla and her friends are herded forward by their captors.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Owen and Joe hustle through the mostly deserted station.
JOE
Owen, this is not a good idea.
This, this you leave to Security.
OWEN
You see one of them right now? You
see any of them?
JOE
No.
OWEN
Me neither.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
The Commandos, the Admiral, and the Security officers have
picked up momentum as the pirates abandon the Jump Ring.
Commander Rofolo checks his wrist band security feed.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Admiral? I don’t think we’re going
to reach them in time.

!32
ADMIRAL
We can make it close.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Sir, the pirates have breached the
station’s exterior walls. If we
don’t stop them, close is the last
thing we want to be.
ADMIRAL
Recommendation?
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Seal off the Terminus.
The Admiral stops, exhales aggressively, grits his teeth.
ADMIRAL
Do it.
INT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
Owen and Joe sneak behind walls and abandoned kiosks.
Up ahead, the Terminus is empty save for the last of the
pirates, the scant items yet to be brought on board, and
Aralla and her friends.
The captured kids make one last, futile stand against the
pirates before they’re prodded into one of the tunnels.
JOE
Owen, if you think we’re following
them onto one of those ships, you
are crazy.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - HOLD - SPACE
The ship is dank, rusty, dripping with grease.
Booty, prisoners and pirates fill the hold. Aralla and her
friends are shoved into a small pack of fellow prisoners,
including Dr. Vroon.
Maleonas enters and addresses a handful of nearby pirates.

!33
MALEONAS
Get the prisoners in the brig. And
ready my shuttle.
INT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
The last of the pirates enter the nearby drill tunnel.
JOE
Now what?
Fifty feet behind the two boys, blast doors lower from the
ceiling. Interlocking metal teeth bite into the floor.
The boys watch, stupidly, as the Terminus is sealed shut.
Owen and Joe turn back to the drill-tunnel.
JOE
Owen, you know about the vacuum of
space and hull breaches, all that?
OWEN
Yup.
JOE
Yeah I don’t think we’re going to
want to be in here when those
ships leave.
The tunnel begins to close.
The two boys shoot forward, screaming, rushing towards the
tunnel as its petal-like drill tip draws shut.
But they’re far too late. The tunnel’s shut tight.
JOE
No, no, no!
The boys look down the Terminus. Two tunnels remain open.
Owen and Joe charge towards them.
The nearer of the two begins to close. The boys sprint
towards it, but the drill tip has almost come together.

!34
They reach the second tunnel. It hasn’t sealed itself shut,
but they’re not squeezing through.
Owen and Joe have already set their sights on the last
drill-tunnel as it begins to close.
OWEN
Don’t stop, don’t stop!
They pump their feet. They’re almost there.
The drill tip is a third closed, the opening shrinking.
But they make it. Owen and Joe jump up, grab ahold of the
drill’s lower segments, and hoist themselves up and in as
the drill tip clenches shut.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - BRIG - SPACE
Aralla, her friends, Dr. Vroon, and a few stately looking
aliens are shoved into a dingy holding cell. Metal bars
lower from the ceiling. Kobor gives them a futile shake.
KOBOR
Not liking this, guys.
ARALLA
No disagreement.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - BOARDING TUNNEL - SPACE
Owen and Joe lean against the tunnel wall, panting.
OWEN
Man, that was close.
The tunnel begins to retract into the ship, forcing the
boys along with it.
JOE
Seriously?
EXT. JUMP RING - TERMINUS - SPACE
The raider ships begin to pull away from the Ring. Debris
is sucked violently into space.

!35

EXT. JUMP RING - SPACE
The raider ships move away from the Jump Ring.
INT. JUMP RING - SECURITY COMMAND - SPACE
The Admiral and the Commandos file into a Security command
center, followed tentatively by the Security officers.
The Commandos quickly activate and man the myriad of
viewscreens. All feeds reveal the same scene: raider ships
pulling away from the Ring.
The Admiral turns to the Security officers, setting his
eyes on Officer Urkfurk.
ADMIRAL
You.
URKFURK
Sir?
ADMIRAL
Is this station equipped with
fighter craft?
URKFURK
Some, sir, yes.
ADMIRAL
Man them, as many as you can.
EXT. JUMP RING - SPACE
The pirate armada assembles around the command ship.
Other vessels continue to take off from the Ring, most
entering hyperspace, a scant few taking the wormhole home.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - HOLD - SPACE
Owen and Joe enter the dark innards of the ship, hiding
behind a nearby bulk of techno treasure, alert and on edge.

!36
INT. JUMP RING - PILOT LOADING BAY - SPACE
Dozens of detached fighter craft cockpits line the floor of
the loading bay, canopies open and waiting for pilots.
The Ring’s Security officers race towards the cockpits,
jumping in and strapping themselves down.
INT. SECURITY FIGHTER COCKPIT - SPACE
Urkfurk, just barely able to fit in the small space, smacks
away at the fighter’s controls, grumbling.
The cockpit drops below the floor of the loading bay,
travelling downwards on a dimly lit guide track.
EXT. JUMP RING - OUTER SURFACE - SPACE
A pack of small Galactic Security Force fighters cling to
the underside of the Jump Ring.
Mechanical arms ferry the pod-like cockpits from the
innards of the Ring and lock them onto the fighter crafts.
Manned fighter crafts disengage, one after another.
EXT. JUMP RING - SPACE
The fighters fly towards the pirates in formation.
The Security ships engage the pirate fleet, clashing with
the small pirate fighters, zooming around the hulking
raider ships like wasps.
INT. COMMAND SHIP - BRIDGE - SPACE
Maleonas storms onto the bridge of the command ship and
throws himself into his chair. He surveys the viewscreen
and the state of his forces.
MALEONAS
Find the farthest rendezvous point
we can reach at masked speeds, and
get us out of here.

!37
PIRATE
Sir!
EXT. JUMP RING - SPACE
Laser fire fills the vacuum of space as Security and pirate
fighters target one another.
And just ask quickly as the skirmish had begun, the pirate
command ship enters hyperspace, blinking out of sight.
It’s followed by one of the raider ships, then a second,
and a third. The rest aren’t far behind.
The pirate fighter ships are next, disengaging from
Security and disappearing into hyperspace.
INT. JUMP RING - SECURITY COMMAND - SPACE
The Admiral and Commander Rofolo watch the now abandoned
Security ships looping around aimlessly in space.
ADMIRAL
Track their hyperspace trails and
have our ships follow the pirates.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Yes, sir.
Commander Rofolo brings up a variety of scans.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Sir? They’ve masked their jump
trails. They’re gone.
The Admiral grips the edge of the terminal, fuming.
EXT. TERRA NOVA DESERT - DAY
Owen’s rover remains at Joe’s landing site, now accompanied
by a team of scientists that sweep the desert.
Most of them flock around the tracks in the dirt left from
the spaceship’s landing gear and propulsion systems.
Another one of the colonists inspect’s Owen’s rover.

!38

INT. ROVER – DAY
The scientist reaches into the rover’s cockpit and
activates the dash controls. A user profile appears: Owen.
INT. COLONY LIVING QUARTERS – DAY
Mrs. Adamson taps away at a transparent touchscreen.
The main door slides open and Mr. Adamson enters.
MRS. ADAMSON
Hi, honey.
MR. ADAMSON
Hi, dear.
They embrace, sharing a cute peck on the lips.
MRS. ADAMSON
How’s the bio-generator?
MR. ADAMSON
Humming along nicely.
MRS. ADAMSON
That’s nice. Heard from Owen?
MR. ADAMSON
Not a peep. But he’s probably on
his way back this very moment.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - HOLD - SPACE
The two boys remain hidden near the tunnel entrances.
Joe peeks his head out. Pirates sit nearby, feet up,
playing something like an alien card game.
Owen stares off into space.
JOE
Owen? Owen?
No response. Joe gives Owen a shove. Owen snaps out of it.

!39

OWEN
Huh?
JOE
You with me here, buddy?
Owen takes in the shadowy alien space ship.
OWEN
Yeah. I am.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - BRIG - SPACE
Aralla’s gaze roams the brig, steady and methodical.
Kobor leans against the bars, arms crossed. He stares at
the pirate guards, muttering to himself.
Loothu waves sheepishly at the other captive aliens. Sadly,
he doesn’t get much of a response.
KOBOR
We waiting this out?
ARALLA
Don’t know what other option we
have at the moment.
Tessaracta walks up to Aralla and Kobor.
TESSARACTA
This simply will not do.
KOBOR
Easy there, Tess.
He glances at the handful of regal alien prisoners, then
nods his head at the pirates.
KOBOR
Best to keep the royal-pain-inthe-butt routine in check.

!40
TESSARACTA
I don’t plan on drawing it to
their attention, Kobor, but thank
you kindly for the suggestion.
INT. JUMP RING - CONCOURSE - SPACE
Security officers walk the concourse, surveying the
aftermath of the pirate raid, the debris, the scorch marks.
INT. JUMP RING - SECURITY COMMAND - SPACE
The Admiral consults with Commander Rofolo.
ADMIRAL
Any trace of hyperspace
tunnelling? Anything at all?
COMMANDER ROFOLO
None, sir. Complete mask.
The Admiral leans in closer to the bank of viewscreens.
ADMIRAL
How many known gravitational
bodies are along the exit
trajectories and can be reached at
masked speeds?
Rofolo’s hand skip furiously across the controls.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
One thousand, seven hundred and
three.
The Admiral winces.
ADMIRAL
Organize the search. Start with
the nearest locations.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - HOLD - SPACE
The pirates continue to play their game.

!41
GRUMBLING PIRATE
The Security Admiral was on that
Ring! Unbelievable.
SECOND PIRATE
I hear ya, I hear ya. Practically
begging Security to lock us up.
A hand comes to an end and the grumbling pirate throws his
cards on the table. The third pirate laughs raucously,
grabbing his money off the table.
THIRD PIRATE
Might happen anyway if we didn’t
mask our trails right.
Joe slumps against the nearby booty and snorts humorlessly.
JOE
Masked their trails.
OWEN
What? What does that mean?
JOE
Means no one’s going to find us.
The sound of the ship’s engines changes, winding down in
tone, and Joe picks up on it.
JOE
And now we’re coming out of
hyperspace. Brilliant.
EXT. JUNGLE PLANET ORBIT - SPACE
The planet’s expansive crimson and purple jungle is like an
angry, all encompassing bruise.
The pirate ships exit hyperspace, re-compressing above the
planet before heading towards it en masse.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Abandoned ships and techno junk, rusted and derelict,
litter the jungle clearing.

!42

The raider ships, fighter craft and stolen ships fly
towards the clearing. They touch down, forming a large ring
around the edge of the open area, leaving the center of the
clearing open.
The massive command ship looms above the clearing.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - HOLD - DAY
A horizontal seam of light appears on the wall opposite the
drill tunnels.
EXT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - DAY
The side of the raider ship opens, becoming a loading ramp
that drops down to the dirt.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - BRIG - DAY
The pirate guards approach the prisoners, laser guns drawn,
and the brig’s metal bars rise into the ceiling.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - HOLD - DAY
Sunlight floods the hold as pirates begin to haul the
spoils down the ramp.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Pirates file out of the raider ships and stomp down the
ramps, hauling booty towards the clearing.
INT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - HOLD - DAY
Owen and Joe watch as the hold is slowly emptied. A few
hoverjets rest on the other side of the hold.
Joe grabs a piece of stolen equipment from off the floor.
JOE
This could be tricky.
OWEN
Huh?

!43
Joe lobs the equipment at the hoverjets. It arcs through
the air, spinning slowly ... and hits one of the vehicles
dead on. The hoverjets begins to topple over.
The pirates rush over to the overturned vehicles, shouting
at each other, pointing fingers. And turning their backs to
the loading ramp.
Joe shoves Owen, pointing furiously at the ramp. The boys
hustle towards the opening in the hold.
EXT. LOADING RAMP - DAY
Owen and Joe step out into the jungle sunshine and quickly
jump off the side of the ramp.
EXT. UNDERNEATH LOADING RAMP - DAY
Owen and Joe hide beneath the ramp.
OWEN
Good throw.
The two boys cautiously stick their heads out.
EXT. LOADING RAMP - DAY
Aralla and her fellow prisoners are prodded towards the
clearing by their pirate guards.
EXT. UNDERNEATH LOADING RAMP - DAY
Owen smacks Joe and points to a far ramp.
OWEN
Found ‘em.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The prisoners step off the ramp. Dr. Vroon is slow to move,
and one of the guards gives him a shove.
Dr. Vroon tumbles forward, nearly hitting the dirt, but he
braces himself against the hovering metal box.

!44
ARALLA
Hey!
Kobor and Aralla storm over to the guard. Kobor is almost
eye to eye with the pirate. The two stare each other down.
KOBOR
Don’t do that.
Tessaracta goes to Dr. Vroon, helping him to his feet.
PIRATE GUARD
Get moving, old man.
The group begrudgingly continues on.
TESSARACTA
Are you alright?
DR. VROON
I’m fine enough. And thank you.
Your highness. I’ve never met a
princess before. Odd timing.
Tessaracta sizes up an impish, grinning Dr. Vroon.
TESSARACTA
We’re overrated.
Dr. Vroon extends a wrinkled hand to the children.
DR. VROON
I’m Dr. Elimat Vroon, physicist.
TESSARACTA
Tessaracta.
ARALLA
Aralla.
KOBOR
Kobor.
LOOTHU
And I’m Loothu!

!45
DR. VROON
My you’re excitable.
KOBOR
You have no idea.
INT. COLONY COMMUNICATION CENTER – DAY
The Administrator walks amongst the terminals.
The scientists from the landing site enter. Chatter in the
room dies down to a quiet murmur.
ADMINISTRATOR
What did you find?
SCIENTIST
Touchdown confirmed, ma’am.
ADMINISTRATOR
Incredible. And? Contact?
The scientists share uncertain glances.
ADMINISTRATOR
What is it?
SCIENTIST
It seems likely.
ADMINISTRATOR
What does that mean? Did you make
contact or not?
SCIENTIST
No ma’am, we did not. But it looks
like someone else did.
EXT. UNDERNEATH LOADING RAMP - DAY
Owen and Joe watch the pirates as a loose ring of booty
forms around the center of the clearing.

!46
EXT. STOLEN SPACESHIPS - DAY
Joe’s ship stands amongst a dozen others. Pirates make
their way to the clearing, leaving the ships unattended.
EXT. UNDERNEATH LOADING RAMP - DAY
Joe smacks Owen and points to stolen ships.
JOE
Found my ship.
Something rumbles above. Owen and Joe look skyward.
EXT. COMMAND SHIP UNDERSIDE - DAY
A rectangular seam appears on the underside of the ship. A
platform lowers from the ship, hover engines extending.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The pirates and prisoners watch the platform descend.
EXT. UNDERNEATH LOADING RAMP - DAY
Owen and Joe watch as the platform nears the ground.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The platform touches down, surrounded by stolen goods.
EXT. HOVER PLATFORM - DAY
Captain Maleonas stands in the center of the platform,
flanked by more pirates.
EXT. UNDERNEATH LOADING RAMP - DAY
Joe groans, pulls at his hair-tentacles dramatically.
JOE
And it’s Captain Maleonas.
OWEN
Not a good guy?

!47
JOE
Not a good guy. We’d better hurry.
The boys crawl out from under the loading ramp.
EXT. HOVER PLATFORM - DAY
A group of high ranking pirates join Maleonas, all nodding
or bowing slightly in his presence.
MALEONAS
No sign of Security coming out of
hyperspace?
PIRATES
No. / Uh-uh. / No, sir. / etc.
MALEONAS
If they’d tracked us, they’d be
here by now. Let’s get started.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Maleonas walks by the mounds of booty, inspecting it
superficially, tossing some items aside.
MALEONAS
Not quite the discretion in our
looting I would’ve hoped for.
Maleonas stops his tour, turns to the ranking pirates.
MALEONAS
If we can use it or sell it, it
goes on the platform. The chaff
stays behind.
The high ranking pirates nod and hustle off. Maleonas
continues to peruse the contraband.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The kids stand at the edge of a pack of other prisoners.
Something across the clearing catches Aralla’s attention.

!48
KOBOR
What is it?
ARALLA
Thought I saw something.
EXT. EDGE OF JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Owen and Joe sneak behind the bulky pirate raider ships,
along the perimeter of the clearing.
INT. JUMP RING - SECURITY COMMAND - SPACE
Commander Rofolo consults with one of the Commandos. Heads
nod. Rofolo turns and approaches the Admiral.
ROFOLO
Sir, we haven’t been able to
locate Dr. Vroon.
ADMIRAL
And the prototype?
ROFOLO
No signs of it either, sir.
ADMIRAL
Better by the moment.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Dr. Vroon makes his way through the prisoners, then sets
his eyes on the hovering metallic box.
Two pirates sort through stolen goods. They knock on the
nondescript metal surface of the box, look at one another,
shrug, and push the box onto the platform.
The old man winces.
EXT. EDGE OF JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Owen and Joe peer out from behind a raider ship. The stolen
ships are just up ahead.

!49
Maleonas and a half dozen pirates appear from the clearing
and inspect the ships.
EXT. STOLEN SPACESHIPS - DAY
Maleonas walks past the ships and looks them over.
MALEONAS
Take it, take it, leave it.
EXT. EDGE OF JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Owen and Joe follow Maleonas’ progress.
EXT. STOLEN SPACESHIPS - DAY
Maleonas eyes Joe’s ship.
MALEONAS
Take it.
Maleonas gives the other ships one last cursory glance.
MALEONAS
Good enough. Trash the nav banks
on the ones we’re leaving behind.
The pirates file onto the unfavorable ships as Maleonas
marches back towards the platform.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Aralla pulls her friends into a loose huddle.
ARALLA
Kobor, how many of these guys you
think you could take on at once?
KOBOR
I’ll put those three over there to
sleep right now if you want.
ARALLA
Not yet, too much attention.
Aralla looks across the clearing at the stolen ships.

!50

ARALLA
But if we managed to hide onboard
my ship and wait for them to
leave, you’re looking at two or
three of those morons onboard,
tops. Then once we clear orbit Kobor smashes a fist into an open palm.
ARALLA
Exactly.
KOBOR
I like it.
LOOTHU
What about everyone else?
ARALLA
We’ll get help.
TESSARACTA
What if they’re gone by then?
ARALLA
You know we can’t take them, Tess.
Tessaracta looks over at the other prisoners. Dr. Vroon
stands on his own, lost in thought.
EXT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - DAY
A pirate walks away from Joe’s ship. Owen and Joe appear.
Joe gives his ship a loving pat.
JOE
I’ll be back, baby. Hang tight.
(to Owen)
Alright, let’s grab the others and
get out of here.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Aralla and her friends make their way to the back of the
mass of prisoners, closer to the jungle.

!51

EXT. EDGE OF JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Owen and Joe come around one of the raider ships. The
prisoners stand fifty feet away.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
One of the pirates hops onto a hoverjet and starts it up.
EXT. EDGE OF JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Owen and Joe creep towards the prisoners.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Aralla and the others stand at the back of the prisoners.
And thirty feet away, lurking in the shadows of the closest
raider ship, stand Owen and Joe.
TESSARACTA
Is that ... ?
ARALLA
Joe?
EXT. PIRATE RAIDER SHIP - DAY
Owen and Joe spot the others, staring right back at them.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Aralla, Kobor, Tessaracta and Loothu take a step away from
the other prisoners.
Joe grabs Owen. They dash out of the shadows.
The pirate on the hoverjet appears, making a slow looping
turn towards the platform, bringing him face to face with
Owen and Joe.
The kids are still. Same goes for the pirate.
PIRATE
What ... are you two ... doing?

!52

The pirate looks back and forth between the boys and the
prisoners, then scrambles for his laser gun.
Owen reaches out and shoves the pirate off the hoverjet.
The pirate hits the dirt, dumbstruck.
Once again, everyone’s still. Aralla breaks the spell.
ARALLA
Run!
JOE
Run? Run where?!
Owen jumps onto the vacant hoverjet and grips the controls.
OWEN
Get on?
Joe hops on behind Owen, holding onto Owen’s waist.
JOE
Do you know how to ride one of
these things?!
OWEN
Not really.
The hoverjet bolts forward.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The hoverjet flies around the clearing like a wild bottle
rocket, engines roaring, passengers screaming.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Owen struggles with the hoverjet’s controls as Joe tries to
hang onto Owen for dear life.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
All eyes, pirates and prisoners alike, follow the hoverjet
as it loops and spins fifty feet above the ground.

!53
Maleonas watches the hoverjet with muted curiosity. It
turns, then heads in his direction. He cocks an eyebrow.
The hoverjet careens towards Maleonas, and he drops to his
stomach, just barely managing to keep his head as the
hoverjet zooms above him.
Maleonas gets to his feet, far from amused.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Aralla and her friends watch the spectacle, mouths agape.
ARALLA
And this is why I wanted to go
unnoticed.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Owen is focused, eyes keen, mouth taut, knuckles white.
OWEN
(shouting over engine)
I’m getting the hang of it!
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Sure enough, the hoverjet’s flight is far less erratic.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
The hoverjet makes a wide banking turn high above the
clearing, circling over the platform below.
JOE
(shouting over engine)
Now what?
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The high ranking pirates rush over to Maleonas’ side.
MALEONAS
I don’t think they’re coming down.
Go get them.

!54
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Both kids watch as the pirates man the hoverjets below.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The pirates set their hoverjets in gear and rocket skyward.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Joe twists backwards, watching as the pirate hoverjets gain
altitude and head towards the boys.
OWEN
What’s the call?!
JOE
Lose ‘em!
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The boys fly towards the jungle. The pirates follow.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
While the crimson jungle is expansive, golden pillars of
sunlight cut through the loose canopy. Thin, newspaper-wide
leaves fill the air, hanging from drooping branches.
Owen and Joe race through the jungle, their hoverjet
bobbing and weaving through the foliage.
There’s distance between the pirates and the boys, but the
gap’s not getting any bigger.
The boys bank left and right, up and down, snaking through
the trees. Each turn is tighter than the one before.
EXT. PIRATE HOVERJETS - DAY
The pirates unholster their laser guns and take aim.

!55
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Lasers whiz by the kids. Joe yelps in surprise. None of the
lasers hit the boys, but some ricochet off of the hoverjet,
scorching metal.
OWEN
How’s this thing holding up?
JOE
Still flying, ain’t we?
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The boys fly forward, avoiding branches, trunks, and
massive leaves, laser fire at their backs.
EXT. PIRATE HOVERJETS - DAY
The pirates struggle to aim as they steer the hoverjets.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The foliage to the right of Owen and Joe begins to change,
giving way to thick, looming banyan-esque jungle trees.
The strip of banyans creeps closer to the boys.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
A wall of banyans appears straight ahead, and Owen jerks
the hoverjet to the left.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The boys narrowly avoid entering banyan territory.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Joe stares at the daunting banyans, again on the right.
JOE
Too close, Owen, too close!
More laser fire shoots past their heads, and they hunch
down instinctively. Joe smacks Owen on the back.

!56

JOE
Let’s go, let’s go!
OWEN
Shut up and hold on!
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
A chorus of squeaks and chirps grows louder, drowning out
the sound of the hoverjets.
Then the air is clogged with bird/bat/reptilian things that
dive out from the trees and fill the jungle.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
The boys cling even tighter to their hoverjet as they pass
through the thick cloud of flying creatures, a few of them
smacking against the hoverjet’s small windshield.
Owen pushes the hoverjet towards the dirt, skimming above
the ground and below the creatures.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The pursuing pirates are engulfed by the flying things.
EXT. PIRATE HOVERJETS - DAY
A pirate comes face to face with one of the flying
creatures and is knocked off his hoverjet.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The dismounted pirate falls twenty feet to the ground. His
aimless hoverjet connects with a tree and explodes.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The pirates and the prisoners all watch as a tendril of
black smoke rises from the jungle and into the sky.
Maleonas looks at his gawking minions.

!57
MALEONAS
Get the platform loaded.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
One pirate doubles back towards his fallen comrade. The
others continue on after the boys.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Joe looks back at the explosion.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The boys have put more distance between themselves and the
pirates. But the laser fire returns.
The jungle begins to thin. The light grows ahead.
EXT. JUNGLE WATERFALL - DAY
Owen and Joe burst out of the jungle foliage.
To their left is the expansive lip of a massive horseshoeshaped waterfall. Before them, a two hundred foot drop into
churning whirlpools.
Spray from the waterfall backs vibrant rainbows, caves
behind partially visible. The thick crimson jungle lines
the wide river that feeds the waterfall.
The pirates appear, and the laser fire returns.
Owen steers the hoverjet towards the curtain of water.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Owen hugs the waterfall, the hoverjet almost sideways as it
follows the curving wall of water. Joe holds on tight.
EXT. JUNGLE WATERFALL - DAY
The pirates follow Owen and Joe’s arcing nose dive.

!58
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Owen takes a quick look back at the pirates.
OWEN
This isn’t working.
Owen pulls back violently on the hoverjet’s controls.
EXT. JUNGLE WATERFALL - DAY
Owen’s hoverjet pulls away from the waterfall, climbing.
The pirates mirror the aggressive manoeuvre.
Owen’s hoverjet hits vertical. Then it’s upside down,
inverted, before Owen rolls the hoverjet upright.
The boys head for the jungle, followed by the pirates.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
Owen and Joe zip through familiar jungle foliage.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
The pirate command ship is partially visible through the
jungle canopy, looming above the jungle clearing ahead.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The pirates continue to chase after the boys’ hoverjet.
Oily black and yellow pods hang from the surrounding trees.
The pods open. Fangs are revealed.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Owen grips the controls tightly as he weaves through the
carnivorous flora.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The pods snap at Owen and Joe, unsuccessfully.
Unfortunately for the boys, the pirates are equally lucky.

!59
Then they’re all through, leaving the black pods behind.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Owen scans the jungle frantically.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The dense body of banyan-like trees appears up ahead. Owen
pilots the hoverjet right for them.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Joe sees where they’re headed. His yellow eyes bulge.
JOE
Owen, Owen, be careful, man!
OWEN
I know what I’m doing.
They reach the banyans.
EXT. BANYAN FOREST - DAY
Owen pulls back on the throttle as the boys enter the
throng of banyan trees.
The vine-wrapped trees are woven together like organic
catacombs, sunlight barely breaking through the canopy.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The pirates near the banyans and enter cautiously.
EXT. BANYAN FOREST - DAY
Bobbing and weaving, every turn brings Owen’s hoverjet
within an arm’s reach of a gnarled banyan trunk.
EXT. OWEN’S HOVERJET - DAY
Owen means business as he cuts through the trees.
OWEN
They still back there?

!60

Joe glances back, can only make out quick flashes of the
pursuing hoverjets through the trees.
JOE
Not right behind, but not far.
OWEN
Get ready.
JOE
Ready for what?
Owen and Joe swoop around a large trunk. Another massive
banyan awaits dead ahead.
Owen grabs a hold of Joe’s jumpsuit and guns the engine.
EXT. PIRATE HOVERJETS - DAY
The pirates weave through the trees, and encounter an
expanding inferno.
EXT. BANYAN FOREST - DAY
The pirates scramble to avoid the explosion and flaming
banyan trees, spreading out in all directions.
Slowly, carefully, they return to the burning wreckage of
the boys’ hoverjet.
FIRST PIRATE
Yikes.
SECOND PIRATE
What a mess.
THIRD PIRATE
Let’s get back then.
The pirates turn, and head back through the banyan trees.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The droning of hoverjet engines grows louder, and the
hoverjet-riding pirates appear.

!61

They circle briefly before settling down near Maleonas.
FIRST PIRATE
Sir, we tried grabbing the two of
‘em, but before we could, they ...
took a wrong turn. Head first.
A second pillar of smoke now rises above the jungle canopy.
MALEONAS
Unfortunate, those were good
machines. Finish loading the
platform.
The pirates nod, then move towards the platform.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Aralla and her friends stare at the black smoke as it
climbs higher into the alien sky.
EXT. ICE GIANT ORBIT – SPACE
The planet is a swirling orb of purple and blue gas, no
visible land or sea to speak of.
A Security fighter kicks out of hyperspace.
INT. SECURITY FIGHTER COCKPIT - SPACE
Officer Urkfurk inspects the controls. The purple ice giant
dominates the view before him.
URKFURK
This is Officer Urkfurk, location
one-oh-nine. Not picking up any
unknown hyperspace tunnelling.
He plunks at a few buttons and gauges.
URKFURK
Atmosphere is scanning toxic
across the board. Gravity’s three
times standard. Looking pretty
unfriendly, even for a pit stop.

!62

A final few cursory checks.
URKFURK
EM radiation within natural
ranges. No one’s down there.
Transmitting and moving on.
Urkfurk rubs a weary face. He grabs the controls, and the
planet sweeps out of view.
EXT. ICE GIANT ORBIT – SPACE
The Security ship blinks off into hyperspace.
INT. JUMP RING - SECURITY COMMAND - SPACE
The Admiral sits off to the side of the main bank of
monitors, rubbing at the alien equivalent of his temples.
Commander Rofolo approaches.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Sir?
The Admiral opens his eyes and sets them on Rofolo.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
We haven’t detected any sign of
the pirates, although more than
two thirds of the target locations
remain to be inspected.
ADMIRAL
Assuming the pirates headed to one
of them. Instead of some uncharted
rock, or station, or coordinates
in the middle of nowhere.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
That’s correct, sir. We have
received word that the Fleet is en
route to assist, but ...
ADMIRAL
But time is not on our side.

!63

COMMANDER ROFOLO
No, sir, it is not.
The Admiral nods, and a hand returns to his temples.
ADMIRAL
Thank you, Commander.
Rofolo leaves the Admiral to his thoughts.
EXT. BANYAN FOREST - DAY
The totalled hoverjet and nearby banyans continue to burn.
And but of course, out from behind a fallen tree trunk
twenty feet from the fire crawl Owen and Joe, dirty,
scratched, but relatively unharmed.
The boys stand before the wreckage, inspecting the fire
that, moments before, was their ride out of the jungle.
OWEN
Wow.
JOE
Owen, that was way, way too close.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
Owen and Joe step out of the banyans. They spot the
airborne command ship through the tree tops.
OWEN
There. That way.
JOE
So what, sneak attack, round two?
OWEN
Unless you’d prefer to stay here,
camp out for a bit.
JOE
I’ve had enough of these trees.

!64
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The pirates load the remaining items onto the platform. The
prisoners, now one pack, are just off to the side.
The kids stare at the lingering black smoke that drifts
above the jungle.
Aralla looks over at her ship. She takes a few steps
towards it.
Kobor grabs her by the arm. Aralla looks back at her
friend. He shakes his head.
Maleonas takes one last look around, then addresses the
other pirates.
MALEONAS
Get the prisoners onboard. We’re
done here.
The prisoners are pushed onto the platform and left
standing amongst the stolen wares.
The platform lifts off the ground.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The boys push through the jungle, the command ship ahead.
Then the hover platform appears, rising above the trees.
OWEN
No.
EXT. PLATFORM - DAY
The platform is midway between the clearing below and the
command ship above.
The prisoners stare transfixed at the black smoke. Dr.
Vroon shuffles over to the kids.
DR. VROON
I’m sorry.

!65
The platform is cloaked in shadows as it nears the
rectangular notch underneath the pirate command ship.
INT. COMMAND SHIP - PLATFORM HANGAR - SPACE
Pirates stand at attention along an upper catwalk that
wraps around the perimeter of the cavernous room.
The platform locks into place, doubling as the hangar’s
floor, and sealing the prisoners in.
EXT. JUNGLE - DAY
The boys watch the platform merge with the command ship.
OWEN
No, no, no.
Then the raiding vessels and stolen ships lift off the
ground. The small armada points spacewards, accelerates
quickly, and is gone in an instant.
Owen and Joe are left staring at an open sky.
OWEN
What am I doing here? Joe, what am
I doing here? I shouldn’t be here,
what am I doing here?!
JOE
I shouldn’t be here either! And I
didn’t drive us into that tree,
Owen, you did!
OWEN
We were being chased through the
jungle, by pirates from space,
because you walked face first
right into them!
JOE
Hey it was your genius idea to
come to the rescue, remember? We
should’ve stayed put on the Ring,
left this to the professionals!

!66
Owen takes a slow, surly step towards Joe.
OWEN
Why was I there in the first
place? I should be at home,
oblivious. Safe. But you showed
up. And kidnapped me. Now I’m
going to die on some random, crazy
alien planet, that probably
doesn’t even have a name, because
of you. You stupid, stupid alien.
JOE
That so? Makes two of us, buddy.
Owen turns his back on Joe, pulling at his hair, fuming.
One of the carnivorous pods drops out of a tree. Owen jumps
out of the way to avoid its gaping, fang-lined maw.
OWEN
Would you just give me a break Owen grabs a log and smashes the pod in the mouth.
OWEN
- for one second? Come on!
The pod yelps and pulls itself back up into the trees. Owen
holds onto his log like an irate caveman.
JOE
You done? I can wait you know, if
you want to knock around a few
more plants. Your call.
Owen tosses the stick aside, and takes a step forward.
OWEN
Done.
The boys continue on in silence.

!67
EXT. EDGE OF JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Owen and Joe step out of the jungle and into the clearing.
Other than the discarded items and rejected spaceships, the
jungle clearing is empty, not an alien soul in sight.
INT. COMMAND SHIP - PLATFORM HANGAR - SPACE
The prisoners sit on the floor, huddled together, heads
down, silent.
The sound of the engines changes, their pervasive hum
winding down as the ship comes out of hyperspace.
The prisoners look amongst one another nervously.
TESSARACTA
We’re here.
KOBOR
Wherever here is.
The pirates stand at attention and circle the prisoners.
The prisoners get to their feet.
There’s a muffled sound like two heavy objects colliding,
metal on metal, and the ship lurches sideways.
The ship settles. Everything’s quite. Everything’s still.
Then, footsteps from above as Maleonas appears.
MALEONAS
Take the prisoners down in groups,
and lock them up.
One end of the hangar is dominated by a pair of large
doors. They slide open, revealing a freight elevator.
The kids and Dr. Vroon are part of the first group that’s
led inside.
EXT. ABANDONED SPACESHIPS - DAY
Owen sits atop a weathered storage container, alone,
staring at a trio of feint daytime alien moons, the
abandoned spaceships at his back.

!68

Joe steps out of the nearest ship, a junker of a vessel,
and ambles over to Owen, flopping down beside him.
JOE
They wiped the nav charts.
OWEN
I take it that’s a bad thing.
JOE
Yep. Even if the ship works, we
don’t know where we’re going. We’d
be flying blind through the
galaxy. And if you hadn’t figured
by now, big galaxy.
Owen nods absently. Then he cocks his head, face scrunched.
OWEN
But we do know where we’re going.
We’re going wherever they went.
Can we follow them?
JOE
Well, maybe, but only if they ...
if they didn’t mask their jumps.
OWEN
Did they?
The boys jump off the container and scramble onto the ship.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - DAY
Joe smacks away at monitors and buttons.
JOE
Unbelievable.
OWEN
What?
JOE
I’ve got ‘em. All the hyperspace
entry points, one after another.

!69

OWEN
Well let’s go!
JOE
Owen, these trails are like
ripples in water. They’re clear at
first, but eventually, space
settles. Trails die out. And these
ones are already fading.
OWEN
Then we’d better get moving.
JOE
Owen ... if we lose those trails
before we reach the exit points,
then we’re stranded, in space,
without any way of knowing which
way to go.
OWEN
What other choice do we have?
Joe giggles humourlessly, eyes wide, almost like a madman.
JOE
Alright. Alright. Take a seat,
we’re already running out of time.
EXT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - DAY
The spaceship’s exterior door slides shut, the engines rev
up, and the ship lifts off the ground.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
The space junker flies away from the jungle planet.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - SPACE
The viewscreen displays the void of space beyond. It’s
overlaid with realtime visualizations of the hyperspace
trails, along with vector indicators and calculations.
Joe’s eyes dart side to side, scanning the viewscreen.

!70

JOE
We’ve got a problem.
OWEN
What?
JOE
The ships didn’t stick together.
Indeed, though the trails start together, they veer off in
all directions like a three dimensional starburst.
OWEN
Go where most of them go.
JOE
There isn’t a most of them.
OWEN
Then follow the biggest one.
JOE
Owen, are you sure about this?!
OWEN
No.
JOE
Oh man.
OWEN
Joe? Do it.
Joe reaches out to the controls.
EXT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - SPACE
The spaceship speeds up and enters hyperspace.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - HYPERSPACE
Stretched-out stars flash by the viewscreen as the ship
barrels through hyperspace. A dozen of the visualized
hyperspace trails lead the way, twisting through space like
roller coasters, bending around stars and planets.

!71

JOE
Tunnels are clear. Velocities
matched.
Then the lights in the bridge begin to flicker. The sound
of the engines wanes, the pitch oscillating.
JOE
No, no, no, no, no.
The engines rev up, then back down. Lights shine bright,
then dim. Alarms sound, warnings flash.
JOE
You piece of junk!
Joe claws at the controls.
JOE
Come on, come on!
The engines can’t seem to maintain a steady output. The
hyperspace trail visualizations are expanding, losing
definition, bleeding into one another.
JOE
Owen, we’re losing them.
Now the trails aren’t much more than one blurry tunnel.
OWEN
Just stay in the middle!
JOE
We’re not going to have a middle
for much longer!
The ghostly pack of the hyperspace trails is almost gone.
OWEN
Please, please, please ...
Then the viewscreen explodes with information,
notifications, and alien script, all pointing to spherical
nodes at the end of the trail: hyperspace exit points.

!72

JOE
There!
Joe slams his hand against the controls.
EXT. PIRATE PLANET ORBIT - SPACE
The beat-up spaceship exits hyperspace above an ominous
grey sphere. Dark, churning clouds sweep across the planet,
leaving most of the surface obscured.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - SPACE
The pirate planet looms enormous on the viewscreen. Joe
slumps back in his chair, groaning.
JOE
Owen, I really don’t think you
understand how close that was.
OWEN
Maybe not, but tell me later.
INT. COLONY LIVING QUARTERS – DAY
Mrs. Adamson stands at a wall-mounted communication screen,
while Mr. Adamson taps at a thin tablet.
MRS. ADAMSON
Honey, I still can’t reach Cater.
MR. ADAMSON
Huh. Transport bay logs show the
rover’s been returned. Just a few
minutes ago, actually.
MRS. ADAMSON
Then why isn’t he answering?
MR. ADAMSON
He’s a teenager. Probably thinks
we bug him too much as it is.
MRS. ADAMSON
He could still answer his mother.

!73

The front door chimes. Owen’s parents look at one another.
MRS. ADAMSON
Why would Owen ring?
Mr. Adamson walks to the main entry the living quarters.
MR. ADAMSON
Open.
The door opens, revealing the Administrator and the
scientists from the landing site.
ADMINISTRATOR
Mr. and Mrs. Adamson?
Mrs. Adamson joins her husband.
MRS. ADAMSON
Yes?
ADMINISTRATOR
We have a situation.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - SPACE
Joe taps at the controls. A fluctuating scanning grid
appears overtop the planet on the viewscreen.
JOE
It ain’t pretty down there, but at
least they should be easy to find.
Just one point of activity.
The display zooms in on a small pinprick on the planet,
which expands to fill the screen. A sort of infrared / xray view highlights a solid mass against the grey.
JOE
If the others are anywhere on that
rock, I’m thinking it’s there.
OWEN
Along with the pirates.

!74
JOE
Along with the pirates.
OWEN
Alright then. Let’s take a look.
EXT. PIRATE PLANET WASTELANDS - DUSK
The planet is a dark mirror of Terra Nova. Barren, desolate
grey rock, clouds blocking out the system’s star. Lightning
snakes down to the ground, violent and jagged.
Joe’s clunker spaceship breaks through the clouds, heading
down to the rocky surface.
INT. PIRATE JAIL - DUSK
The jail cells are hollowed-out pits in dank grey rock,
sectioned off by rusted metal bars. Pirates push the
prisoners towards the open cells, separating the kids from
the rest.
The pirates place their hands on stubby consoles beside the
cells. The metal bars swing shut, clanging heavily.
One of the pirates takes a lazy seat by the door.
Kobor, Tessaracta, and Loothu step up beside Aralla.
KOBOR
Now what?
ARALLA
There’s only one question, really: how
many of them do you think we can all
take on at once?
EXT. PIRATE BASE - DUSK
A colossal escarpment stretches across the horizon. The
pirate base is built into the cliff, a metal wedge
splitting the sheer rock face apart.
The base is wider at the bottom, tapering as it climbs up
and above the rock, ending in a sharp spire. Near the
bottom is an open hangar.

!75

The pirate command ship hangs in the air just below the
upper tip of the base, docked to the spire.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - DUSK
The boys observe the base on the viewscreen.
OWEN
Are they going to know we’re here?
JOE
At this distance? Yeah, probably.
OWEN
So ... ?
JOE
Working on it.
EXT. PIRATE BASE - DUSK
The beat-up spaceship coasts towards the pirate base.
INT. HANGAR CONTROL BOOTH - DUSK
A portly pirate mans a control booth, feet up, watching
some sort of alien show.
A monitor beeps beside him. He shifts his weight, scans the
monitor, and smacks a few buttons.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - DUSK
The bridge is empty. The viewscreen blinks repeatedly.
INT. HANGAR CONTROL BOOTH - DUSK
The pirate waits for a response, scratches his head.
HANGAR PIRATE
Hello? Who’s out there? Respond.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - STORAGE - DUSK
The boys rummage through the ship’s cargo.

!76

JOE
Yeah, that’s great, use that!
INT. HANGAR CONTROL BOOTH - DUSK
The pirate sits up, looming over the console.
HANGAR PIRATE
This is the hangar, identify
yourself. Identify yourself.
No response. The pirate turns away and begins to access
another program. Then a comm window appears on the monitor.
It’s Owen and Joe. Dressed as pirates.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - DUSK
Owen and Joe sit in the bridge, their jumpsuits adorned
with rough odds and ends salvaged from the ship’s cargo.
Rags, pelts, scraps of metal and plastics cover their suits
and their faces, just barely mimicking pirate garb.
The hangar pirate stares at them, impatient, suspicious.
JOE
(surly like a pirate)
Sorry, sorry, we’re, uh, we’re
having troubles with the comms on
this bird.
HANGAR PIRATE
What are you doing out there?
Owen and Joe share a nervous glance.
JOE
She broke down on the way back,
isn’t running too good.
OWEN
(surly like a pirate)
Needs a lot of work! Should’ve
left ‘er behind.

!77
JOE
Yeah, so, we’re going to bring ‘er
in now, have someone take a look.
INT. HANGAR CONTROL BOOTH - DUSK
The pirate chews on the boys’ words, scrutinizing them on
the monitor ... then shrugs indifferently.
HANGAR PIRATE
Alright. Set her down before you
crash into something.
INT. BEAT-UP SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - DUSK
The hangar pirate disappears from the viewscreen. Owen and
Joe share a moment of silence.
OWEN
Now what?
JOE
I think we just fly in.
INT. PIRATE BASE HANGAR - DUSK
The hangar is filled with pirate attack craft and stolen
vessels. Pirates mull around the hangar floor.
The battered spaceship enters through the wide outer
entrance, flies over to a vacant spot, and sets down.
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
The beat-up spaceship’s hatch opens, and Owen and Joe step
out into the hangar, a pair of diminutive pirates.
OWEN
Caught a break for once, huh?
JOE
We were due.

!78
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
Owen and Joe move through the hangar, surrounded by
spaceships and genuine pirates. They keep their heads low,
trying to remain unnoticed as they look around the place.
A group of pirates approach the boys. Owen and Joe slow.
The pirates nod. The boys clear their throats, which is
about the best their (human and alien) adolescent vocal
chords can manage. The pirates grunt in acknowledgment.
The boys hustle forward.
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
The boys reach Joe’s ship, its hatch open and inviting.
JOE
Missed you, baby!
They scan the area before darting into the ship.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DUSK
Joe jabs away at the ship’s console, running antsy hands
through his hair-tentacles. Owen stands behind.
JOE
Charts are all here, systems
operational. She’s good to go.
Joe pauses, then turns to Owen, hesitant.
JOE
We could go home, you know. Right
now. And get help.
OWEN
What if they’re taken somewhere
else? Or worse? I can’t leave now.
Can you?
JOE
No. No ... but I’ve got an idea.

!79
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
The boys reach Aralla’s ship, nestled amongst the others.
JOE
We don’t tell Aralla about this
until after we get them out of
here, you got that?
INT. HANGAR CONTROL BOOTH - DUSK
The hangar pirate continues to watch his show. Owen and Joe
appear on the second monitor.
JOE
Hey, we got another bird that we
need to check out, make sure shHANGAR PIRATE
Yeah, yeah, just let me know when
you’re heading back.
The pirate cuts the feed and returns to his show.
INT. ARALLA’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - DUSK
Owen and Joe stare at the ship’s blank viewscreen.
JOE
I like that guy.
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
Owen and Joe zip down the ship’s external stairs as the
landing hatch closes behind.
They wheel around and watch as Aralla’s ship lifts off,
heads towards the exit, and flies away from the base.
OWEN
I hope this works.

!80
INT. PIRATE COMMAND ROOM - DUSK
Maleonas sits on a throne-like chair at the far end of a
war table, his back to a wall of windows that look out onto
the dark grey expanse of the rocky planet.
A dozen idiot pirates sort through some of the spoils,
littered across the floor. Off to the side, unattended,
hovers Dr. Vroon’s box.
MALEONAS
What’s in that?
A few of the pirates bring the box out from the shadows.
They poke and prod at it, but the box remains closed.
Maleonas sighs heavily, looks out at the rock sea beyond.
Then gas plumes hiss out from spreading cracks in the box.
It opens like a flower, unfolding onto the floor.
Maleonas leans forward in his seat, elbows on the table.
The air clears. The box holds a circuitry-imbued metallic
halo. Long grey cables hang from the back of the headband.
MALEONAS
Which one of you found this?
Dr. Vroon’s original pirate captor steps forward.
INT. PIRATE JAIL - DUSK
Dr. Vroon watches the kids from his cell as they whisper
amongst themselves on the other side of the room.
EXT. JUNGLE PLANET ORBIT - SPACE
A Security fighter exits hyperspace, appearing far above
the crimson jungle planet.
INT. SECURITY FIGHTER COCKPIT - SPACE
Officer Urkfurk taps at the controls.

!81
URKFURK
This is Officer Urkfurk at
location nine-seven-two.
His sour expression gives way to surprise, and he leans in
close to check the readouts.
URKFURK
I’m picking up tunnelling!
Urkfurk digs a little deeper.
URKFURK
The trail’s too faint to follow.
But I’m also seeing some localized
noise on the planet surface.
Urkfurk scratches his pig-like stubble as he stares at the
red orb that looms before him.
URKFURK
Taking a closer look.
EXT. JUNGLE PLANET ORBIT - SPACE
The Security fighter zips off towards the planet.
EXT. JUNGLE CLEARING - DAY
Urkfurk’s fighter lands in the center of the clearing. The
fighter’s hatch lifts up, and the hefty Security officer
hops out of the spacecraft.
Animal calls drift in from the jungle beyond the clearing.
Urkfurk looks around at the loose ring of abandoned junk.
He moves to the edge of the clearing and picks up a piece
of discarded booty. It’s clean, relatively unscratched.
INT. DERELICT SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - DAY
Urkfurk enters the ship’s bridge, inspects the controls.
URKFURK
Wiped clean.

!82

EXT. DERELICT SPACESHIP - DAY
Urkfurk steps out of the spaceship, walks a few paces. He
takes in the desolate clearing, lifeless, still.
INT. COLONY COMMUNICATION CENTER – DAY
Owen’s parents have joined the Administrator in the
colony’s command center. Mr. Adamson paces back and forth.
MR. ADAMSON
Okay, I want to make sure I have
this right. You think that there
was some sort of alien landing,
out in the desert.
ADMINISTRATOR
Correct.
MR. ADAMSON
And Owen was at the landing site.
ADMINISTRATOR
Correct.
MR. ADAMSON
And whatever landed has since left
the planet. Along with our son.
ADMINISTRATOR
Correct.
Mr. and Mrs. Adamson share an anxious, desperate glance.
MRS. ADAMSON
So what do we do?
ADMINISTRATOR
We wait. And hope they return.
INT. PIRATE BASE - HANGAR CORRIDOR - DUSK
The base’s hallways are cut out of the bare grey rock.
Metal doors, hanging lights, random equipment and exposed
cables adorn the otherwise raw tunnels.

!83

Our two short pirate impostors make their way through the
halls of the hideout, sneaking around in plain sight.
Joe dodges a drop of stagnant water that falls from above,
joining a murky puddle in the middle of the floor.
JOE
Cozy.
Owen glances at the ship-filled hangar they leave behind.
OWEN
This is so weird.
INT. PIRATE JAIL - DUSK
The kids are huddled together in their cell.
ARALLA
Ready to make this happen?
Aralla’s friends each nod in response.
KOBOR
Tess, time to play the princess
card.
TESSARACTA
I suppose it is.
Tessaracta moves up to the bars, stares directly at the
lone guard by the door, and clears her throat.
TESSARACTA
Hey, you, peon. On your feet. Now.
KOBOR
Yikes. Here we go.
The guard gets out of his chair and lumbers over.
GUARD
What did you say?

!84
TESSARACTA
I am Princess Tessaracta of the
Tolonoc Hive Empire, and I will
not tolerate this confinement a
moment longer. You will take me to
whomever’s in charge of this
pathetic excuse for a pirate band
so that I may negotiate my
immediate release.
The guard postures up and moves in closer to the bars.
GUARD
I’m going to what now?
TESSARACTA
You are going to open this cell,
apologize for imprisoning me, and
escort me to your master so that I
may discuss my release.
GUARD
My master? Now look lady, this
here is a pirate cooperative. Fair
share of the spoils.
TESSARACTA
I know a drone when I see one.
The guard, riled up, moves in even closer. The other kids
shuffle over to Tessaracta, lining up against the bars.
GUARD
Drone? I’m a willing participant
in this criminal enterprise, here
on my own free will!
TESSARACTA
That’s what they want you to
think. Mindless, like the rest.
Now the guard’s steaming, standing right in front of the
bars, half a foot from Tessaracta and the other kids.

!85
TESSARACTA
Kobor, do you have anything
persuasive to add to this
conversation?
KOBOR
Huh? Oh, right.
Kobor reaches out, grabs the pirate by the shirt, and
smashes the pirate’s head against the bars of the cell. The
pirate guard slumps to the ground, out cold.
TESSARACTA
Apology accepted.
LOOTHU
Touchy fellow, wasn’t he?
The kids drag the guard towards the cell’s controls and jam
his hand against the console. The cell rumbles open.
ARALLA
Kobor, open the rest of them.
KOBOR
You got it.
Kobor pulls the pirate by his collar towards the other
cells, opening them one after another.
The guard stirs, mumbling. Kobor knocks his head against
another set of bars. The guard goes back to sleep.
KOBOR
Keep napping, buddy.
Aralla looks over Dr. Vroon and the stately, dignified, and
not particularly imposing group of aliens.
ARALLA
You all want to get out of here?
DR. VROON
Ready when you are, my dear.

!86
INT. PIRATE BASE - JAIL ANTECHAMBER - DUSK
The prisoners exit the jail, kids in front, Dr. Vroon right
behind. They’re cautious, but not creeping on tip toes.
INT. PIRATE BASE - HALLWAY - DUSK
The prisoners turn a corner. They come face to face with
three rather startled pirates fixing a busted conduit.
KOBOR
Here we go.
Kobor throws himself at the nearest of the pirates. Aralla
joins in, then Tessaracta and Loothu.
Kobor quickly outmuscles his opponent. The pirate is lifted
above Kobor’s head and tossed aside, yelping as he slams
into a wall.
Tessaracta grapples with another, the shoving match going
back and forth, the stronger pirate evenly matched against
Tessaracta’s many limbs.
Loothu climbs onto the pirate’s back. Smacking tentacles
hit home, and the pirate is subdued.
Aralla’s left, but she’s not having as much success. The
third pirate cowers over Aralla, gripping her wrists.
A hefty tool swings down and connects with the back of the
pirate’s head.
The pirate keels over, revealing a riled up, hunched over,
tool wielding Dr. Vroon.
ARALLA
Thanks.
Dr. Vroon nods, offers a wily grin.
All of the prisoners take in the scene.

!87
LOOTHU
Yeah I don’t think we’re going to
be able to keep up the quiet
approach.
INT. PIRATE BASE - ELEVATOR HUB - DUSK
Four orthogonal hallways lead into the hub.
A circular elevator platform waits in the center of the
room, hovering above the ground. The elevator sits below a
wide shaft, access to the base’s various levels.
Owen and Joe enter from one of the hallways.
A handful of pirates move about, some hopping on the
elevator platform, all oblivious to the intruders.
OWEN
I keep expecting them to notice
me, like it’s totally obvious.
JOE
Owen, believe me, you look just as
weird as they do.
OWEN
That’s sort of comforting.
Joe looks up into the gaping elevator shaft.
OWEN
Whoa.
JOE
Guessing that bad boy goes right
to the top.
Owen and Joe stare down the other possible routes. Left,
straight ahead, to the right. And of course, up.
OWEN
This could take a while.

!88
INT. PIRATE BASE - HALLWAY - DUSK
A stampede of prisoners rushes through the pirate base,
brandishing pipes and pieces of furniture as clubs.
Pirates are pushed aside, squashed against walls, trampled
underfoot, and left behind.
None of them are quick or courageous enough to try to
subdue the escapees. There’s no time to shoot, no time to
sound the alarm, just barely enough time to panic.
The kids lead the way, and the prisoners are increasingly
brazen, cheering with each subdued pirate.
Dr. Vroon is particularly energized, bopping gawking
pirates on the head with his newly found club.
ARALLA
Old man’s feisty.
KOBOR
No kidding.
Kobor’s approach is blunt and direct as he ploughs forward.
Aralla and Tessaracta are speedy, elusive, coursing around
pirates before slamming them into walls.
Loothu takes the opportunity to crawl along the ceiling,
rushing ahead of the others.
He reaches a small group of dumbstruck pirates, then drops
down onto the one in the middle. Loothu wraps tentacles
around the pirate’s head, obscuring the pirate’s vision,
and grabs onto the pirate’s wrists.
Like a puppeteer, Loothu directs the pirate’s limbs,
smashing commandeered fists into unsuspecting pirates.
He lifts up off his dummy pirate’s head, and makes the
pirate punch himself right between the eyes.
Loothu hops off his unconscious and now useless mount, and
stands proudly by his handiwork as the others catch up.

!89
Kobor looks over the pile of bodies, impressed.
KOBOR
Didn’t know you had it in you.
Loothu grins, ‘flexing’ his tentacles like a bodybuilder.
Then the prisoners are back on the move.
INT. PIRATE BASE - ELEVATOR HUB - DUSK
Owen and Joe make their way around the room’s perimeter.
A growing rumble echoes throughout the hub. The few
lingering pirates look around and amongst themselves.
OWEN
You hear that?
Owen and Joe look down the far hallway. The mob of
prisoners heads straight for the elevator hub.
JOE
No way.
The throng of prisoners let loose a mighty battle cry. They
take on the handful of pirates with ease. Then they set
their sights on Owen and Joe.
The prisoners wrap around the elevator, coming at Owen and
Joe from both sides.
JOE
Uh, Aralla?
The boys stare at the prisoners, then at each other.
OWEN / JOE
Your clothes!
Owen and Joe frantically tear off their pirate accessories
in the face of the charging prisoners.
OWEN / JOE
(to prisoners)
Wait, wait, wait!

!90

The boys manage to uncover their faces just as the
prisoners are on top of them.
ARALLA
Joe! Owen!
TESSARACTA
You’re alive!
Kobor turns to the other prisoners, keeps them at bay.
KOBOR
Hold on, hold on, they’re our
friends!
The kids share ecstatic embraces.
LOOTHU
I don’t believe it!
ARALLA
What are you doing here?
OWEN
We’re here to rescue you!
ARALLA
Rescue us?
KOBOR
How’d that go last time?
JOE
That was just a run through.
TESSARACTA
What are you two wearing?
JOE / OWEN
Disguises.
ARALLA
Boys, we are so past the point of
disguises.

!91
DR. VROON
Enough talk, let’s get moving!
JOE
Wait, who’s this guy?
DR. VROON
Dr. Elimat Vroon. And now is not
the time, my wiry green fellow.
JOE
Fair enough. Hangar’s this way!
EXT. JUMP RING - SPACE
Urkfurk’s fighter comes out of hyperspace.
INT. SECURITY FIGHTER COCKPIT - SPACE
Urkfurk checks the displays, taps at the controls.
SHIP COMPUTER
Docking initiated.
EXT. JUMP RING - SPACE
Urkfurk’s ship flies towards the Jump Ring, joining a cloud
of other returning Security fighters.
INT. JUMP RING - PILOT LOADING BAY - SPACE
Disengaged fighter cockpits rise up from the shafts below.
Canopies open, and Security officers hop out.
All eyes are on Urkfurk, but no one says a word.
INT. JUMP RING - SECURITY COMMAND - SPACE
The Admiral, Commander Rofolo and the rest of the Commandos
watch the displays, talking amongst themselves.
Urkfurk appears at the entrance, a throng of hushed fellow
officers behind him.
ADMIRAL
Officer Urkfurk, is it?

!92

URKFURK
Yes, sir.
ADMIRAL
What did you find, Officer?
Urkfurk shuffles nervously, clears his throat.
URKFURK
I found their landing site.
Probably a regular waypoint. But
they were gone. And the trails
were cold. No indication of where
they went from there.
ADMIRAL
I see.
Something flashes on the monitors. Commander Rofolo hunches
over the system, investigating.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Sir? We’re getting a distress
call.
A view outside the Jump Ring pops up on the viewscreen.
Aralla’s ship is right in the middle.
COMMANDER ROFOLO
Ship just appeared out of
hyperspace. Started comming the
moment she came through, waiting
on us to answer.
ADMIRAL
Let’s see what they have to say.
Another window opens on the monitor. It’s Owen and Joe,
sitting in the bridge of Aralla’s ship, dressed as pirates.
JOE
Okay, it’s recording. Um, hey. So,
I’m Joe, this is Owen.

!93
OWEN
What are you doing?
JOE
I’m introducing ourselves.
Owen pushes Joe to the side, looks straight at the camera.
OWEN
We’ve got a problem over here ...
INT. PIRATE BASE - ELEVATOR HUB - DUSK
A handful of pirates, including Dr. Vroon’s captor, ride
down the floating disc of an elevator.
They set down, amongst a handful of unconscious bodies.
INT. PIRATE COMMAND ROOM - DUSK
Maleonas stares out the windows, hands behind his back.
A comm window appears on a wall monitor, displaying one of
the pirates, now in the jail room. Behind him, the cells
are open and empty, the pirate guard sprawled on the floor.
PIRATE
Sir, the prisoners are gone.
Maleonas wheels around to address the monitor.
MALEONAS
What?
PIRATE
They’ve escaped, must be somewhere
in the base.
MALEONAS
Sound the alarm. Find them.
INT. PIRATE BASE - HANGAR CORRIDOR - DUSK
Owen and Joe lead the escapees. The hangar is just up
ahead, Joe’s ship visible from the hallway.

!94
JOE
There’s my ship, right ahead!
ARALLA
Did you find mine?
JOE
Yeah about that ...
Then the alarm sounds, pulsing through the base.
OWEN
Oh no.
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
The pirates in the hangar draw their guns.
INT. PIRATE BASE - HANGAR CORRIDOR - DUSK
The kids and the other aliens race forward.
A pirate appears from behind a ship in the hangar, spotting
the prisoners as they hustle down the corridor towards him.
PIRATE
Over here!
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
Pirates rush over to join the lone man at the entrance.
INT. PIRATE BASE - HANGAR ENTRANCE - DUSK
The prisoners stop just short of the hangar, blocked by a
wall of pirates, laser guns pointed at them.
Another wave of pirates appears behind.
The momentum, the energy, the hope and bravado disappears.
INT. PIRATE BASE PASSAGEWAY - DUSK
A dozen pirates walk the kids and Dr. Vroon through the
base at laser gunpoint.

!95
INT. PIRATE BASE - ELEVATOR SHAFT - DUSK
The pirates, kids and Dr. Vroon ride the circular elevator
platform, passing by different levels of the pirate base.
INT. PIRATE BASE - UPPER FLOOR - DUSK
The platform comes to a stop. The pirates guide Dr. Vroon
and the kids across a walkway, the open shaft below.
INT. PIRATE COMMAND ROOM - DUSK
Dr. Vroon and the kids are thrust into the command room.
Maleonas stands in the center of the room, arms crossed.
MALEONAS
What is going on today? I can’t
remember the last time I had this
much trouble pillaging. And from a
group of children no less.
Maleonas spots Owen and Joe and does a double take.
MALEONAS
You two. Aren’t you supposed to be
dead? I was told you were dead.
OWEN
Sorry to disappoint.
Maleonas pinches the bridge of his feline nose, then
gestures at Dr. Vroon.
A pair of pirates drag Dr. Vroon towards the open box.
Vroon stares at the halo.
MALEONAS
Recognize it, I assume? That’s a
start. My name is Maleonas.
DR. VROON
I know who you are.
MALEONAS
Good. And you are?

!96

DR. VROON
Vroon. Dr. Elimat Vroon.
MALEONAS
Very good.
Maleonas moves towards Dr. Vroon, step by agonizing step.
MALEONAS
Dr. Vroon, I would love to know
just what this is. Now I wasn’t
expecting to have to chase you
through my own home, so I do hope
you’ll be a little forthcoming.
Maleonas waits for a response.
MALEONAS
Dr. Vroon?
Dr. Vroon continues to stare at the halo.
Maleonas rolls his eyes, then whirls around dramatically,
walking amongst his pirate minions.
MALEONAS
Let me share something with you,
Vroon, that has been bothering me
ever since we set foot on that
Jump Ring. We always anticipate a
degree of resistance when we set
out to acquire our prizes.
The pirates chuckle.
MALEONAS
It’s to be expected. But today, we
weren’t met by typical Security,
that put up a respectable, but
ultimately futile, fight. No,
today we came face to face with
the Admiral’s own elite squadron
of Commando bodyguards.
Dr. Vroon seems restless, nervous.

!97

MALEONAS
And so I asked myself: what was
the Admiral of the Galactic
Security Force doing on that Jump
Ring, in the middle of nowhere?
Maleonas walks up to the simple, bizarre halo.
MALEONAS
He was there for this, wasn’t he?
Dr. Vroon doesn’t meet Maleonas’ eyes. Maleonas smiles.
MALEONAS
Whatever this is, it’s important
enough that the Admiral would meet
you in person just to see it.
Maleonas returns to Dr. Vroon, his smile wide, and hostile.
MALEONAS
So again, I ask you: what is it?
Dr. Vroon remains silent.
Maleonas sighs, points off to the side. On this cue,
pirates drag a monstrosity of a machine out from the
shadows, part iron maiden, part electric chair.
Dr. Vroon and the children reel at the sight of it.
MALEONAS
Care to enlighten me now, Vroon?
Dr. Vroon’s tormented eyes dart back and forth between the
torture device and the halo. But he stays silent.
MALEONAS
So I have to be the bad guy?
Maleonas walks over to the kids, settles on Owen.
MALEONAS
You. I like you the least.

!98
Maleonas grabs Owen by the arm and hauls him, writhing and
shouting, towards the device.
DR. VROON
Wait, wait!
Maleonas turns to face Dr. Vroon, still holding Owen.
MALEONAS
Yes?
DR. VROON
Only if you promise to let us go,
to let all of us go.
Maleonas smiles shrewdly, delaying the moment, then nods.
DR. VROON
We have a deal?
MALEONAS
We have a deal.
DR. VROON
It’s, it’s a neural modulator.
Mind control. The halo makes
anyone follow your command. Once
on their head, it turns anyone ...
into your slave.
MALEONAS
Does it now?
Maleonas hauls Owen towards the halo, grabbing it from the
box and shoving it roughly onto the boy’s head.
The circuitry on the halo lights up, blue-white electrical
pathways encircling Owen’s head. The halo resonates with a
high frequency whine, increasing in pitch.
Owen cries out, holds his hands to the sides of his head.
The wires at the back of the halo begin to wrap around
Owen’s body, down his back, along his limbs, to the tips of
his hands and feet.

!99
Like an external nervous system, the wires branch out,
splitting as they course over Owen’s body, containing the
boy in an interwoven mesh of grey and white-blue light.
The whining cuts out. Owen hits the floor.
The room is silent. Dr. Vroon watches, tense, eyes narrow.
HALO
(melodic female voice)
Neural integration complete. All
systems nominal.
Maleonas crosses his arms, looming over Owen.
MALEONAS
Stand up.
Owen pushes himself up onto his feet.
MALEONAS
Interesting ... walk forward.
Owen takes a slow step forward, then another.
MALEONAS
Stop.
Owen keeps shuffling, looks around the command room.
MALEONAS
I said stop.
But Owen has absolutely no interest in Maleonas.
OWEN
This is really, really ... weird.
Owen faces the windows and cocks his head.
Owen’s enveloped in ribbons of white-blue light, swirling
around his body. Then he blinks out of existence.
There’s another burst of blinding light, and Owen reappears
beside Maleonas’ throne.

!100
DR. VROON
(whispering)
It works.
Another flash, and Owen’s back in the center of the room.
OWEN
Cool. Very cool.
MALEONAS
Vroon, what have you done?
Owen looks at Maleonas, grinning. And without a moment’s
hesitation, he’s on the move.
He teleports around the command room, knocking pirates
over, smacking the guns out of their hands.
The pirates shoot wildly. The prisoners hit the deck.
One by one, Owen incapacitates the pirate captors.
Maleonas tracks the teleporting boy around the room. He
withdraws a laser gun from his side.
MALEONAS
And ...
Owen appears behind Malonas.
MALEONAS
... there you are.
Maleonas shoots Owen square in the chest.
Owen’s knocked backwards. He hits the ground, crumpling
into a heap. Electricity arcs around his suit.
JOE
Owen!
The prisoners jump back onto their feet. So do the pirates,
along with their weapons.
A seething Maleonas turns to Dr. Vroon.

!101
MALEONAS
I said we had a deal, Vroon.
DR. VROON
I didn’t believe you.
MALEONAS
Didn’t believe me.
Maleonas points at Owen’s motionless body with his gun.
MALEONAS
I think I would’ve liked to have
held onto one of those suits.
DR. VROON
I’m sure.
MALEONAS
Well the good news is that you can
make me another one.
(looks to children)
I have no use for the rest of you.
(to pirates)
Take them out past orbit and kick
them all out of an airlock. I’ve
had just about enough of them.
Pirates grab the kids. They struggle, pointlessly.
MALEONAS
Mind control. You’re a sneaky one,
Vroon, I will give you that much.
Suddenly, alarms sound and lights flash. Monitors show
angry red symbols: approaching spaceships.
A comm window appears. It’s the Admiral, gloating from the
impressive bridge of a Galactic Security Force warship.
ADMIRAL
So this is where you’ve been
hiding, Maleonas. Finally received
an invitation. I hope you don’t
mind if we let ourselves in.

!102
Laughing, the Admiral’s feed cuts out.
EXT. PIRATE BASE - DUSK
Galactic Security Force ships fly towards the base.
INT. PIRATE BASE HANGAR - DUSK
Panicked pirates man their own ships.
EXT. GALACTIC SECURITY FORCE SPACESHIP - DUSK
Security Commandos jump out of the ship and jet-pack down
to the open mouth of the pirate base hangar.
INT. PIRATE COMMAND ROOM - DUSK
Maleonas storms over to the monitors.
MALEONAS
Unbelievable.
Behind him, Owen groans. He gets to his feet, a handful of
electric bolts still arcing around the suit.
Maleonas looks over his shoulder and spots Owen.
White-blue energy begins to swirl around Owen’s hands.
OWEN
Know what? Shooting this suit?
Might’ve been a bad idea.
Owen aims his hands at Maleonas.
OWEN
Now let’s see here ...
Maleonas backs up, bumping into the war table. Owen spreads
his fingers, and an energy blast surges forward.
The pirate captain jumps to the side, just barely managing
to avoid the blast. The energy hits the war table, and the
table explodes. Maleonas is buried in debris.

!103
OWEN
I like it.
HALO
Warning: irregular quantum
fluctuations detected.
Owen turns to the other pirates in the room. They’re
already high tailing it out the door.
OWEN
Now where you guys going?
Owen lets loose another blast. The control room entrance is
blown wide open.
HALO
Warning: irregular quantum
fluctuations detected.
DR. VROON
What are you doing? The suit
wasn’t designed to handle energy
surges like that - let alone shoot
them!
OWEN
Don’t worry, I’ve got it under
control. Meet me at the lift.
Owen is enveloped in white-blue light, then disappears.
JOE
Isn’t that something.
INT. PIRATE BASE - UPPER FLOOR - DUSK
Pirates run around like chickens with their heads cut off
as the alarm continues to wail throughout the base.
Owen reappears. The process isn’t as smooth as before. More
of the ribbons of energy linger around the suit, crackling
and sparking in the air.

!104
A few pirates shoot at Owen. The lasers hit, leaving scorch
marks on the suit. But it’s not enough to take him down.
Owen chases the pirates off with a few blasts of his own.
HALO
Warning: irregular quantum
fluctuations detected.
The kids and Dr. Vroon rush out from the command room and
join Owen on the lift.
OWEN
What do you all say we get out of
here?
INT. PIRATE COMMAND ROOM - DUSK
The charred and smoking junk that was once the war table
stirs. A robotic hand punches through the rubble.
Maleonas crawls out, hunched over, teeth clenched.
INT. PIRATE BASE HANGAR - DUSK
Laser fire between pirates and Commandos fills the hangar.
INT. PIRATE BASE PASSAGEWAY - DUSK
Commandos have infiltrated the base, facing off against the
pirates, steadily gaining ground.
EXT. PIRATE BASE - DUSK
Security spaceships chase after the fleeing pirate crafts,
shooting laser bolts at the pirates.
The bolts disable the pirate ships, causing the craft to
slow down until they simply hover in the air, motionless.
INT. PIRATE BASE - ELEVATOR SHAFT - DUSK
Owen blasts the pirates that target him and his friends.
OWEN
Stay in the middle.

!105
The pirates take a few shots, some ricocheting off the
lift, others hitting Owen as he shields his friends. The
suit looks increasingly worse for wear.
A few more white-blue energy blasts rid the escapees of any
lingering pirates.
HALO
Warning: irregular quantum
fluctuations detected. System
critical.
DR. VROON
Son, you’ve got to stop this! I
don’t know what it could do to the
suit. I don’t know what it could
do to you!
OWEN
Not until we get out of here.
INT. PIRATE BASE PASSAGEWAY - DUSK
The Commandos push forward into the base, leaving behind a
telltale trail of frozen pirates.
INT. PIRATE BASE PASSAGEWAY - DUSK
Owen unleashes wild tendrils of energy at any pirate that
stands in their way.
The suit’s sluggish, surrounded by an increasing number of
shorting arcs of electricity.
HALO
Warning: irregular quantum
fluctuations detected. System
overload imminent.
OWEN
I know, I know.
(to others)
We’re almost at the hangar.
ARALLA
What about the other prisoners?

!106

OWEN
That, we leave to Security.
INT. PIRATE JAIL - DUSK
The remaining prisoners are once again in their cages. The
Commandos flood into the jail.
PRISONER
Well it’s about time!
INT. PIRATE COMMAND ROOM - DUSK
Maleonas jabs away at a command console. A monitor displays
the pirate command ship docked above the base.
EXT. PIRATE BASE - DUSK
Security ships fly by the massive command ship, raking its
hull with laser fire. Small plumes of disabling electricity
cover the ship.
INT. PIRATE COMMAND ROOM - DUSK
Multiple sections of the of the command ship flash red on
the monitor, accompanied by endless alien alerts.
MALEONAS
Wonderful.
He slams his fist against the console, crushing it, then
turns and heads for the door.
He’s half way there when the tall windows implode, spraying
the command room with broken glass. Jet-pack Commandos
swoop in through the open frames.
They disengage their jet-packs, hit the ground rolling, and
surround the pirate captain, guns drawn.
Maleonas sneers, and slowly raises his hands.
INT. PIRATE BASE - HANGAR CORRIDOR - DUSK
Owen and the others rush towards the hangar entrance.

!107

OWEN
Let’s try this again.
The suit whines as it’s wrapped in energy.
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
Owen appears in the hangar and lurches forward.
A pack of pirates spot Owen, gawking, then open fire.
Lasers plink off the suit, feeding its electrical corona.
Owen charges the suit, and unleashes a wide, raw blast of
energy at the pirates, tossing them in all directions.
Arcs of the white-blue light envelop the suit. The machine
shorts out as its systems overload. Owen cries out as the
suit’s lights fade away.
INT. PIRATE BASE - HANGAR CORRIDOR - DUSK
Dr. Vroon and the children bear witness to the suit’s
electrical failure far off in the hangar.
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
Owen crumples to the floor, motionless in the smoking suit.
INT. PIRATE BASE - HANGAR CORRIDOR - DUSK
The escapees watch, horrified, as Owen hits the ground.
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
Dr. Vroon and the kids race over to Owen. They roll him
over, find him unconscious in the charred suit.
ARALLA
Joe, get the ship ready!
JOE
Yeah, yeah!
Joe races off as the others attend to Owen.

!108
KOBOR
I’ve got him.
Kobor picks Owen off the ground, cradling him.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DUSK
Joe mans the controls, anxiously readying the ship.
INT. HANGAR FLOOR - DUSK
Dr. Vroon and the kids reach Joe’s ship and hustle aboard.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DUSK
Kobor lies Owen down on a row of cushioned seats. Dr. Vroon
is immediately by Owen’s side, looking over the boy,
checking his responses.
ARALLA
Joe, get us out of here!
JOE
I hear you, I hear you!
INT. PIRATE BASE HANGAR - DUSK
Joe’s ship lifts off and flies out of the hangar.
EXT. PIRATE BASE - DUSK
Joe’s silvery ship shoots skyward, cutting through the
ongoing dogfight between Security and the pirates.
One of the Security fighters turns and follows Joe’s ship.
EXT. JOE’S SHIP - DUSK
Joe’s ship rockets through the atmosphere.
The Security craft is right behind. It opens fire.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DUSK
Alarms sound. The kids lean in, distraught.

!109
JOE
They’re shooting at us, they’re
shooting at us!
The kids all turn to a display section on the viewscreen.
It shows the Security ship behind, lasers firing at them.
JOE
It’s Security?!
KOBOR
Comm ‘em!
TESSARACTA
Tell them to knock it off already!
Joe slaps at the controls. A new window appears on the
viewscreen. The kids stare at Officer Urkfurk.
KIDS
Urkie?!
INT. SECURITY FIGHTER COCKPIT - DUSK
Officer Urkfurk sits in the cockpit, hunched over the
fighter’s cramped controls, staring at the comm display.
OFFICER URKFURK
I don’t believe it.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DUSK
The kids laugh madly at the sight of the stupefied Urkfurk.
JOE
Officer Urkfurk, it’s us!
INT. SECURITY FIGHTER COCKPIT - DUSK
Officer Urkfurk shakes his head, grumbling.
OFFICER URKFURK
Didn’t I tell you kids you should
be in school today?

!110
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DUSK
Eyes roll. Hands and tentacles smack faces.
JOE
Urkie, if you want to give us the
“I told you so” speech some other
time, I’m okay with that, but
right now we’ve really got to get
out of here. Yeah?
INT. SECURITY FIGHTER COCKPIT - DUSK
Officer Urkfurk taps at the controls.
OFFICER URKFURK
Yeah. Stay on your course, I’ll
escort you out to the Fleet.
EXT. PIRATE PLANET ORBIT - SPACE
The ships break the planet’s atmosphere.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – SPACE
The Galactic Security Force Fleet takes up most of the
viewscreen. Joe hits the controls with authority.
JOE
Docking.
EXT. PIRATE PLANET ORBIT - SPACE
Joe’s ship flies towards the Fleet.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – SPACE
The kids all lean back in their chairs or slump against
walls, relieved and exhausted.
LOOTHU
And that’s why I like Officer
Urkfurk.
Joe spins around.

!111
JOE
Owen.
Dr. Vroon works at the techno halo around Owen’s head. He
pries off its casing, jabs at its electrical innards.
The suit begins to unravel, the grey chords releasing Owen
and revealing his weathered Terra Novan jumpsuit.
JOE
Is he ... ?
DR. VROON
We’re running out of time.
OWEN’S POV - SPACE
Darkness. Silence.
Then:
JOE (O.S.)
Look, look! He’s waking up!
The darkness parts as Owen opens his eyes. He sees the kids
and Dr. Vroon looming above him.
INT. GALACTIC SECURITY FORCE INFIRMARY - SPACE
Owen lies in a white infirmary bed, surrounded by Dr. Vroon
and his alien friends, now hugging each other and cheering.
Owen looks around groggily and leans up in his bed.
OWEN
Where am I? What happened?
The Admiral enters the room, escorted by Commandos and
Security officers, including Officer Urkfurk.
ADMIRAL
You, my brave young boy, not only
managed to rescue your friends and
those taken prisoner, but helped
us apprehend one of the galaxy’s

!112
most notorious criminals. And on
that point ...
The Admiral activates a nearby monitor.
Maleonas appears onscreen, behind bars in an ultra-secure
warship brig, surrounded by a dozen Commandos, broken.
The kids burst into triumphant, near hysterical laughter.
The Admiral chuckles himself before cutting the feed.
ADMIRAL
Thought you might like that. You
children were all incredibly
brave. The Galactic Security Force
owes each of you its utmost
gratitude.
JOE
For the record, sending the ship
back to contact you guys was my
idea. Yeah?
The other kids turn to Joe, incredulous.
JOE
What?
ADMIRAL
We will ... make a note of it.
The Admiral approaches Owen and rests his hand on the boy’s
shoulder, smiling.
ADMIRAL
Well done, my boy. Today, you are
a hero. But from here on out? Try
to stay out of trouble.
The Admiral heads for the door.
ADMIRAL
Oh, and Dr. Vroon? We’ll be
chatting about the performance of
that prototype of yours.

!113
With one last grin, the Admiral exits, followed by the
Commandos and officers.
URKFURK
Good to see you’re alright, kid.
OWEN
Thanks, Urkie.
Urkfurk grumbles as he waddles out of the room.
Joe slaps Owen on the chest.
JOE
Almost lost you there. But we
figured out how you work. Nothing
like a little electrocution to get
the blood pumping, huh?
DR. VROON
Actually, I believe it stopped his
blood from pumping.
JOE
Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean.
OWEN
Joe?
Joe leans in close.
JOE
Yeah, Owen?
OWEN
I think it’s time to go home.
JOE
Sure thing, buddy. Sure thing.
INT. WARSHIP ELEVATOR LIFTS – SPACE
Owen and Joe stand near the lift doors, facing Aralla,
Kobor, Tessaracta, and Loothu.
Tessaracta gives Owen a hug.

!114

TESSARACTA
Goodbye, Owen.
EXT. GALACTIC SECURITY FORCE WARSHIP - SPACE
Joe’s ship disengages from the Security warships.
INT. WARSHIP ELEVATOR LIFTS – SPACE
Kobor grabs a hold of Owen and wraps his arms around him,
almost crushing the boy.
KOBOR
Good to meet you, Owen.
EXT. GALACTIC SECURITY FORCE FLEET - SPACE
Joe’s ship flies away from the Security Fleet.
INT. WARSHIP ELEVATOR LIFTS – SPACE
Owen isn’t quite sure how to hug Loothu as the alien offers
a snuggly, tentacled embrace.
LOOTHU
I’ll miss you.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE - SPACE
Owen and Joe sit at the controls with muted expressions.
INT. WARSHIP ELEVATOR LIFTS – SPACE
Aralla and Owen share one last, warm hug.
ARALLA
Maybe we’ll catch you later, Owen.
EXT. GALACTIC SECURITY FORCE FLEET - SPACE
Joe’s ship enters hyperspace.

!115
INT. WARSHIP ELEVATOR LIFTS – SPACE
Owen and Joe step into the elevator lift. Owen waves to his
friends, and they wave back. The door slides shut.
EXT. TERRA NOVA ORBIT - SPACE
Joe’s ship comes out of hyperspace above Terra Nova.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – SPACE
Owen and Joe look at the planet through the viewscreen.
Owen stares at the dust bowl, silent. Joe nods glumly.
EXT. TERRA NOVA ORBIT - SPACE
The spaceship heads down towards the planet.
INT. COLONY COMMUNICATION CENTER – DAY
Owen’s parents sit together, holding hands, morose.
The other colonists look over monitors and print outs. One
of the displays begins to beep.
EXT. TERRA NOVA SKY – DAY
Joe’s spaceship cuts through the clouds.
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – DAY
The boys watch the approaching planet on the viewscreen.
JOE
Should I drop you off where I
found you?
OWEN
No, just a little farther. I’ll
show you where.
INT. COLONY COMMUNICATION CENTER – DAY
Everyone crowds around the beeping display.

!116
OFFICER
Ma’am? I think they’re back.
EXT. TERRA NOVA COLONY - DAY
Owen’s parents lead a flood of colonists outside.
Joe’s ship flies towards them, slowing as it reaches the
buildings, touching down gently on the packed dirt.
The ship’s hatch opens, stairs extend, and Owen and Joe
step out into the Terra Novan sunshine.
Parents and child run to each other, embracing fiercely.
The parents look over the boy, their gleaming white jump
suits a stark contrast against his torn and filthy gear.
MRS. ADAMSON
Owen, where have you been?!
OWEN
Oh, you know, out there. Around.
All eyes turn to Joe, who stands ten feet behind Owen.
OWEN
Everyone, this is Joe.
JOE
Hey. How’s it going?
Eyes bulge and mouths go slack.
JOE
And they have absolutely no idea
what I’m saying.
OWEN
Right, right, the language thing.
Joe digs into his pockets, fishes out a handful of familiar
translator disks, and gives them to Owen.

!117
OWEN
(to his parents)
Hold still.
Owen smacks the disks dead center onto his parents’
foreheads. He looks over at the other colonists.
OWEN
Anyone else?
The Administrator and the team from the landing site step
forward. Owen decks them out with their own translators.
OWEN
Joe, try ‘em again.
JOE
Hey. How. Is. It. Going?
ADMINISTRATOR
It speaks. It’s intelligent.
JOE
Come on now, that’s not necessary.
I flew a spaceship here, yeah?
Joe slaps the Administrator jovially on the arm.
JOE
I’m just messing with you, I know
it’s your first encounter. Don’t
sweat it. Hey, I guess that makes
me kind of historic for you guys
now, huh? Cool. I like it.
OWEN
So, long story short: we’re not
alone. Not in the slightest.
JOE
It’s true.
OWEN
Man, where do I start?
(to Joe)
Mind helping with the narrative?

!118

JOE
Beats working.
The colonists slowly move in around the boy and the alien.
INT. COLONY SLEEPING QUARTERS - DAY
A white duffel bag lays open on a small bed. Owen, now
donning a fresh jumpsuit, rummages through storage space
and drawers as he packs the bag.
INT. COLONY LIVING QUARTERS – DAY
Owen enters the living quarters. His parents stand side by
side, waiting by the front door.
INT. COLONY CORRIDOR – DAY
Owen, flanked by his parents, walks down the corridor,
slowly, but not coldly.
EXT. TERRA NOVA COLONY - DAY
Owen and his parents exit the colony.
Joe sits on the stairs leading up to his ship.
MR. ADAMSON
Are you sure about this son?
Owen stares at Joe, then looks at his parents, the
colonists, the buildings and scientific equipment. The
entire colorless operation, bland, sterile, and lifeless.
OWEN
I’m sure.
MRS. ADAMSON
Owen, you just got back OWEN
And I’ll be close by. But this
isn’t for me. You know it.
Owen hugs his parents again, chuckling.

!119

OWEN
Plus, they got some pretty solid
interstellar spaceships. Makes
going back and forth a lot easier.
Owen reaches the spaceship. Joe gets to his feet.
JOE
Yeah?
OWEN
Yeah.
Owen and Joe climb the stairs, stopping at the hatch.
OWEN
Bye, everyone. I’ll be back soon.
MRS. ADAMSON
Sooner, rather than later, Owen.
OWEN
Sure thing, Mom. I promise.
MR. ADAMSON
And be polite to all of those
aliens, son, you understand me?
OWEN
Well some don’t really deserve it,
Dad, but I’ll try my best.
Owen watches the sun set on the alien horizon.
OWEN
Let’s go.
The boys board the space ship.
EXT. TERRA NOVA ORBIT - SPACE
Joe’s ship breaks through Terra Nova’s atmosphere.

!120
INT. JOE’S SPACESHIP - BRIDGE – SPACE
Owen and Joe sit side by side at the ship’s controls.
OWEN
Should I have said a speech? Was
that a speech moment?
JOE
I don’t know. Probably. What are
you gonna do?
Owen and Joe howl with laughter.
JOE
Ready, Owen?
OWEN
Ready.
JOE
Good. Because you ain’t seen the
half of it.
EXT. TERRA NOVA ORBIT - SPACE
The ship stretches out towards the cosmos, and in a flash
of light, it’s gone.
FADE OUT.
