The Twelve Vows of the Medicine Buddha upon attaining Enlightenment, according to the Medicine Buddha Sutra[5] are

: 1. To illuminate countless realms with his radiance, enabling anyone to become a Buddha just like him. 2. To awaken the minds of sentient beings through his light of lapis lazuli. 3. To provide the sentient beings with whatever material needs they require. 4. To correct heretical views and inspire beings toward the path of the Bodhisattva. 5. To help beings follow the Moral Precepts, even if they failed before. 6. To heal beings born with deformities, illness or other physical sufferings. 7. To help relieve the destitute and the sick. 8. To help women who wish to be reborn as men achieve their desired rebirth. 9. To help heal mental afflictions and delusions. 10. To help the oppressed be free from suffering. 11. To relieve those who suffer from terrible hunger and thirst. 12. To help clothe those who are destitute and suffering from cold and mosquitoes. Dharani and Mantra[edit source | editbeta]

may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. when I attain Buddhahood. there should be in my land a hell. If. a realm of hungry spirits or a realm of animals.In the Bhaiṣajyaguruvaiḍūryaprabhārāja Sūtra. humans and devas in my land should after death fall again . 1. when I attain Buddhahood. If. 2. These are the 48 Great Vows that Dharmakara made before he ascended to Buddhahood. the Medicine Buddha is described as having entered into a state of samadhi called "Eliminating All the Suffering and Afflictions of Sentient Beings." From this samadhi state he spoke the Medicine Buddha Dharani. The last line of the dharani is used as Bhaisajyaguru's short form mantra. There are several other mantras for the Medicine Buddha as well that are used in different schools of Vajrayana Buddhism.[5] namo bhagavate bhaiṣajyaguru vaiḍūryaprabharājāya tathāgatāya arhate samyaksambuddhāya tadyathā: oṃ bhaiṣajye bhaiṣajye mahābhaiṣajyasamudgate svāhā.

If. when I attain Buddhahood. at least those of all sentient beings living in a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of Buddha-lands. 14. If. when I attain Buddhahood. even if all the beings and pratyekabuddhas living in this universe of a thousand million worlds . may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. when I attain Buddhahood. If. 10. unable to illuminate at least a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of Buddhalands. when I attain Buddhahood. the number of the shravavakas in my land could be known. If. 9. humans and devas in my land should not possess the supernatural power of travelling anywhere in one instant. even beyond a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of Buddha-lands. when I attain Buddhahood. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. If. even to the extent of hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of kalpas.of knowing the thoughts of others. my lifespan should be limited. 13. 11. my light should be limited. humans and devas in my land should not dwell in the Definitely Assured State and unfailingly reach Nirvana. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

who awaken aspiration for Enlightenment. even ten times. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. sentient beings in the lands of the ten quarters who sincerely and joyfully entrust themselves to me.should count them during a hundred thousand kalpas. humans and devas in my land should have limited lifespan. when I attain Buddhahood. humans and devas in my land should even hear of any wrongdoing. at their death. see me appear before them surrounded by multitude of sages. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. If. 18. when I attain Buddhahood. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. when I attain Buddhahood. 17. If. . may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. If. should not be born there. 16. should not. If. Excluded. are those who commit the five greatest offenses. desire to be born in my land. innumerable Buddhas in the land of the ten quarters should not praise and glorify my Name. however. do meritorious deeds and sincerely desire to be born in my land. 15. 19. when I attain Buddhahood. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. when I attain Buddhahood. except when they wish to shorten them in accordance with their original vows. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. abuse the right Dharma.

may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. sentient beings in the lands of ten quarters who. 22. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. when I attain Buddhahood.20. deliver all beings from birthand-death. If. Tathagatas. Such Bodhisattvas transcend the course of practice of the ordinary Bodhisattva stages. Bodhisattvas in the Buddha-lands of other quarters who visit my land should not ultimately and unfailingly reach the Stage of Becoming a Buddha after one more life. human and devas in my land should not all be endowed with the thirty two physical characteristics of a Great Man. 21. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. enlighten uncountable sentient beings as numerous as the sands of the River Ganges. make offerings to Buddhas. when I attain Buddhahood. If. For they wear the armour of great vows. when I attain Buddhahood. should not eventually fulfill their aspiration. If. concentrate their thoughts on my land. accumulate merits. visit Buddha-lands to perform the Bodhisattva practices. having heard my Name. do various meritorious deeds and sincerely transfer the merits towards my land with a desire to be born there. perfect Enlightenment. manifest the practices of all the . and establish them in the highest. throughout the ten quarters. Excepted are those who wish to teach and guide sentient beings in accordance with their original vows.

to perform meritorious acts of worshipping the Buddhas with the offerings of their choice. when I attain Buddhahood. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. even with the divine eye. Bodhisattvas in my land should not be able. Bodhisattvas in my land should not be able to expound the Dharma with the all-knowing wisdom. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. to distinguish by Name and calculate by number all the myriads of manifestations provided for the humans and devas in my land. when I attain Buddhahood.Bodhisattva stages and actually cultivate the virtues of Samantabhadra. 27. when I attain Buddhahood. 25. in order to make offerings to Buddhas through my transcendent power. If. which are glorious and resplendent and have exquisite details beyond description. 24. there should be any Bodhisattva in my land not endowed with the body of the Vajra-god Narayana. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. 23. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. should not be able to see the Bodhi-tree which has countless colors and is four million li in height. should not be composed of both countless treasures. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. even those with little store of merits. 29. such as palaces. when I attain Buddhahood. If. . when I attain Buddhahood. revealing in its light all the immeasurable. when I attain Buddhahood. If. causing all Bodhisattvas who sense it to perform Buddhist practice. streams and trees. when I attain Buddhahood. If. whose fragrance pervades all the worlds of the ten quarters. ponds. 30. innumerable and inconceivable Buddha-lands.28. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. like images reflected in a clear mirror. pavillions. 31. all the myriads of manifestations in my land. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. Bodhisattvas in my land should not acquire eloquence and wisdom in upholding sutras and reciting and expounding them. If. 32. and of a hundred thousand kinds of aromatic wood. which surpass in supreme excellence anything in the worlds of human and devas. Bodhisattvas in my land. the wisdom and eloquence of Bodhisattvas in my land should be limited. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. If. when I attain Buddhahood. from the ground to the sky. my land should not be resplendent.

when I attain Buddhahood. sentient beings in the immeasurable and inconceivable Buddhalands of the ten quarters who have heard my Name . rejoice in faith. sentient beings in the immeasurable and inconceivable Buddhalands of the ten quarters who have been touched by my light. awaken aspiration for the Enlightenment and wish to renounce womanhood. 34. If. 35. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. women in the immeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten quarters who. should not. . who have heard my Name. 36. If. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. should after death be reborn again as women. when I attain Buddhahood. should not feel peace and happiness in their bodies and minds surpassing those of humans and devas. when I attain Buddhahood.33. after the end of their lives. always perform sacred practices until they reach Buddhahood. Bodhisattvas in the immeasurable and inconceivable Buddhalands of the ten quarters. when I attain Buddhahood. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. should not gain the Bodhisattva’s insight into the non-arising of all Dharmas and should not acquire various profound dharanis. having heard my Name. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.

Bodhisattvas in my land who wish to see the immeasurable glorious Buddha-lands of the ten quarters. dyeing or washing. 40. and if the fine robes as prescribed and praised by the Buddhas should not be spontaneously provided for them to wear. human and devas in my land should not enjoy happiness and pleasure comparable to that of a monk who has exhausted all the positions. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. humans and devas in my land should not obtain clothing. when I attain Buddhahood. when I attain Buddhahood. should not be respected by all the devas and people of the world. If. 41. If. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. and perform Bodhisattva practices. 39. bleaching. just as one sees one’s face reflected in a clear mirror. Bodhisattvas in the lands of the other quarters who hear my . 38. who having heard my Name. should not be able to view all of them reflected in the jewelled trees. prostrate themselves on the ground to revere and worship me.37. when I attain Buddhahood. as soon as such a desire arises in their minds. while dwelling therein. 45. Bodhisattvas in the lands of the other quarters who hear my Name should not all attain the samadhi called ‘pure emancipation’ and. have impaired. If. when I attain Buddhahood. should not always be able to see all the immeasurable and inconceivable Tathagatas . without losing concentration. 42. Bodhisattvas in the lands of the other quarters who hear my Name should not be reborn into noble families after their death. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment.Name should. 44. Bodhisattvas in the lands of the other quarters who hear my Name should not all attain the samadhi called ‘universal equality’ and. 43. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. when I attain Buddhahood. inferior or incomplete sense organs. If. at any time before becoming Buddhas. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. when I attain Buddhahood. should not be able to make offerings in one instant to immeasurable and inconceivable Buddhas. while dwelling therein. If. If. World Honored One. when I attain Buddhahood. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. Bodhisattvas in the lands of the other quarters who hear my Name should not rejoice so greatly as to dance and perform the Bodhisattva practices and should not acquire stores of merits.

when I attain Buddhahood. may I not attain perfect Enlightenment. If. If. second and third insights into the nature of Dharmas and firmly abide in the Truths realized by all the Buddhas. Bodhisattvas in the lands of the other quarters who hear my Name should not instantly reach the Stage of Non-retrogression. Bodhisattvas in the lands of the other quarters who hear my Name should not instantly gain the first. . when I attain Buddhahood. too become Buddhas. Bodhisattvas in my land should not be able to hear spontaneously whatever teachings they may wish.until those Bodhisattvas.
