The Online Airfare Booking Experiment Online Travel Is a Booming Business Do you make purchases online? While a lot of folks who are reluctant to do so, there are a growing number who are finding that the internet is a great way to buy what they want or need without leaving the comfort of their own homes. This is especially true for travel services. Of all the products and services that consumers purchase online, travel is at the top. Just look at some of the figures. YEAR 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 BOOKING REVENUE $46 billion $54 billion $62 billion $70 billion $77 billion $84 billion $91 billion % OF TOTAL U.S. TRAVEL REVENUE 20% 23% 26% 28% 30% 31% 33%

Plunkett Research refers to online travel booking as “the most successful niche of all of the world’s e-commerce efforts.” Since online travel booking is such a big business, it is no wonder that more and more booking agents are appearing online. There are literally dozens. So, when it comes time for you to book your airfare, which one should you use? Is there any that you should avoid? Is there a booking service that consistently offers the lowest prices? The Online Travel Booking Experiment is an attempt to answer these questions. We tested airfare prices on 14 different booking services. The goal was not to find the lowest possible fare for a particular route. That would have meant employing other techniques such as choosing different departure dates, airports, lengths of stay, etc. The goal was merely to determine if any one online booking service consistently presented travelers with the lowest price on airfare compared to their competition. Why survey 14 services? Booking services use different computer reservation systems or databases of available airfares. Computer reservation systems include Abacus, Amadeus, Galileo, SABRE and Worldspan. All these systems are represented by the booking services that we surveyed.

The Online Airfare Booking Experiment Secondly, we started out with more than 30 booking services but found that some of them were generating the exact same list of airfares. We eliminated several and reduced the list to the 14 below. Following is a list of the 14 online booking services surveyed: • • • • • • • Airfare.com Atiflights.com Cheapoair.com Cheaptickets.com Clickandfly.com Economytravel.com Expedia.com • • • • • • • Hotwire.com Jetcombo.com Onetravel.com Orbitz.com Priceline.com Travelocity.com Vayama.com

To reduce as many variables as possible, we used the exact same data for each route surveyed. • • • • • • • Round-trip Economy fare 1 adult Depart from major U.S. airport International destination (major city) Two week stay – leaving on a Saturday and arriving on a Friday Two month advance purchase

Since even the time of day you survey fares can affect the prices that are returned, each route was surveyed on all 14 booking agents within a just a few minutes time. We opened several browsers, entered our data and, then, clicked to get a list of fares. All the data was then entered into a table. You will find these tables at the end of this report. The information in the tables includes the name of the booking agent, airline, stop locations (the number of locations represents the number of stops), cost of fare, taxes and fees, and total cost. The lowest fare is highlighted in green and the most expensive fare in red.

The Online Airfare Booking Experiment The Numbers Are In: The Results of the Experiment The first thing to notice about the survey results is that the price of airfare can vary significantly from one booking service to another. We found airfare with prices that were nearly double those of other booking services. For the 13 routes we researched, EconomyTravel.com had the highest fare on 9 routes and not once did they produce the lowest price. This did not seem very economical to us. Airfare.com gave the highest fare twice and both ClickandFly.com and OneTravel.com produced the highest fare once each. Differently from the results above, there was not a single booking service that consistently produced the lowest fare. The number of lowest fares provided is as follows: ATI (4), Expedia (3), Jet Combo (2), Travelocity (2), Orbitz (2), Priceline (1) and ClickandFly.com (1). The reason there are more than 13 total is because two services produced the same low price on more than one occasion. Since the concern of this experiment was the lowest fare of a particular route in comparison with other booking services, there were occasions in which the lowest fare meant having an extra stop or taking a longer route and/or having longer layovers. Sometimes choosing the lowest fare meant spending double the amount to time to get to your destination. What Does This Mean for You? What this means is that finding the lowest fare for a destination may require you to survey several booking services. There are a few websites you can visit in order to accelerate this process. BookingBuddy.com allows you to enter your data and click on the services from which you want get a list of fares (opens new window each time). They offer many different booking services to choose from but the ones they have that produced some of the lowest fares include Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline and Travelocity. Depending on your flight, ATI may appear as an option. If not, visit ATIflights.com to check their airfare prices, too. Finally, if you want to do a thorough search, check prices at JetCombo.com and directly with the airline that services the route you plan to fly. Total time to search should only take about 10 to 15 minutes. And after all your internet searching is complete…

The Online Airfare Booking Experiment Visit a Trusted Travel Agent While it may be true that more and more people are booking their own travel services online, there are some advantages to using a travel agent. First of all, a travel agent can save you time. Instead of spending a lot of time exhausting all online sources, just do a quick search to get a general idea of the price range for the route you plan to fly. Then deliver the information to a travel agent and let him or her spend the time searching for a better price. Secondly, a travel agent is an insider. The agent knows the travel business. He or she understands the when, where, why and how of finding cheap fares. Experienced agents know how to work the computer reservation system so that it generates different results according to the criteria put in to it. Online systems are quite limited in comparison to what a travel agent can do. This means that an agent can frequently produce more and better results than you or I could unless, of course, you are an experienced travel agent and know these techniques. For example, one secret I learned from a man who spent 16 years working with a major airline corporation was that there is a “secret day to book” airfare. According to Tony Morrison’s Save on Airfare Secrets manual, “The best time to book for your flight is around 6 PM on Tuesdays” because “this is the time when airlines update their systems with new fares.” Since the number of seats that are designated for the lowest price are limited, whoever finds them first gets the best deals. If you want to learn many more helpful tips like this one, I encourage you to get your own copy of Tony’s book. It has a lot of good, general tips on saving money on airfare. The real value, though, is in the many “secrets” he reveals. These are practical tips that few know about. They can save you a bundle on airfare booking. Click to learn more about Save on Airfare Secrets How to Find a Travel Agent That Will Save You Money If you already have a travel agent with whom you book your travel services and are satisfied with his or her service, then this section may not interest you. The Online Airfare Booking Experiment the one you have been using, then keep reading. Finding a good travel agent is like finding extra money because of the savings they can get you. Travel agents are in the service business but, unfortunately, not all of them do a good job of serving. Just the other day, I was walking down the street when I noticed an advertisement for cruises on the window of a travel agency in my neighborhood. Since I had been thinking about a Trans-Atlantic cruise, I decided to step into the agency and get some information. The agency was a one-person operation. The young agent that attended me was apparently having a bad day because she did not seem very happy to have a potential customer. After explaining what I was looking for, she spent several minutes searching online and then in a catalog before informing me that she did not know where to find the information. She asked for my email and informed me that she would keep looking for the answer later that afternoon and then send it to me. That was over three weeks ago and I have yet to receive her message. So, how do you find a travel agent that will go the extra mile? How do you find one that really has your interests in mind? Here is a little trick that I discovered by accident several years ago. Put several travel agents to the test by creating competition for your business. Once you have completed your initial research online and are aware of the general price range for the airfare you want to purchase, it is time to find a travel agent. The first step is to make a list of 3 to 5 travel agents to contact. Local travel agents are ideal but this may not be possible if you live in a small town or remote area. You can find travel agents through the local yellow pages, consulting friends and family members, and searching the internet. Write down the contact information for each one. Now, contact each travel agent and say something like the following. “Hello. My name is John Doe. I need round trip airfare from X to Y, departing month, day and returning month, day. I found an online fare for $XXX and wanted to know if you could find me a better deal.”
© William Manor - U.S. Passport Service Guide Page 7

The Online Airfare Booking Experiment If the agent says “no” then thank him or her and hang up. If the agent says “yes” then give your contact information and any details you think may be important such as your preferences concerning departure and return dates, number of stops, length of trip, etc. There is one other thing to mention and this is very important. Inform the agent that you will be contacting other travel agencies. First of all, this should give the agent the motivation to work harder in an effort to conquer you as a client. Also, the agent will not be surprised if you need to inform them later that another agent found you a better deal. When the first agent calls and informs you that a better deal has been found than the one you located on the internet, then write down the information, thank the agent and inform them that you are waiting for a call from the others you contacted. As each agent contacts you, they will inform you as to whether they located a cheaper price than the one you found. If the price is higher than the first agent that beat the internet price, thank them and inform them that another agent found a better price. They will do one of two things. Either they will accept defeat and hang up or they will offer to look some more. Take special note of those that make this extra effort. Even if they only find a deal equal to the lowest fare you have been offered, their extra effort could still win your favor. If the second, third or fourth agents call with a better price than those with whom you spoke previously, tell him or her that you need to contact the other agents before making reservations. Contact the other agents. Inform each agent of the price that was located and ask if he or she could possibly find you a better deal. Again, they will either say “yes” or “no”. React accordingly. Just keep doing this until an agent gives you the best price and all the others tell you that they cannot beat it. If everything goes according to plan, you will have found both an excellent price on your airfare and a travel agent that you can trust to work hard in favor of saving you money. If you travel frequently, you may want to go through this process another time or two with the two or three agents that you felt worked the hardest before choosing one specific agent as your go-to person for travel services.

The Online Airfare Booking Experiment Now you know where to focus your online research when searching for low prices on airfare. Within minutes, you can have a pretty good list of prices for any ticket you need by just visiting 3 or 4 websites. These include BookingBuddy.com, ATIflights.com, JetCombo.com and the airline that services the route you will fly. Idea Sparks has a list of links in their worldwide airlines directory. Armed with the knowledge of current airfare prices, contact a trusted travel agent and let them go to work for you. If you don’t know one, just use the technique described above to find one. It may take a little extra work the first time but it will be well worth it. Finally, use some of the secrets found in Save on Airfare Secrets to save even more. The book is filled with secrets to saving on airfare, as well as, lodging, food and ground transportation. Thanks for taking the time to read this report. If you found it useful, please tell your friends and family where they can get their own copy. Travel more. Pay less.
