Shechem, Mount Gerizim, and Mount Ebal

Shechem
Many of the events connected with Mt. Ebal and Mt. Gerizim are also connected with the city of Shechem. Mt. Ebal was north of Shechem, and Mt. Gerizim was south of Shechem. Looking at the etymology (below) of the word “Shechem,” it seems that Shechem was the “neck,” and Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal were the “shoulders.” “Ebal” and “Gerizim” seem to have somewhat opposite meanings. “Gerizim” (see below) means “cut up” or “rocky,” while Ebal (see below) comes from a root meaning “bald” and means “bare.” It kind of reminds of unhewn stones (Gerizim, the mountain of blessing) and hewn stones (Ebal, the mountain of cursing). Shechem, Strong’s 7927, She kem, shek-em’; the same as 7926; ridge; Shekem, a place in Pal.:—Shechem.

Strong’s 7925, shâkam, shaw-kam’; a prim. root; prop. to incline (the shoulder to a burden); but used only as denom. from 7926; lit. to load up (on the back of man or beast), i.e. to start early in the norning:—(arise, be up, get [oneself] up, rise up) early (betimes), morning. From Smith’s Bible Dictionary —SHECH’EM (ridge). SICHEM (Gen. xxxiii. 18). It is not certain whether the city was named from Shechem, the son of Hamor, or that he was named after the city. It is on top of the ridge between the waters of the Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea, between Ebal and Gerizim (Judg. ix. 7). Called Sychar in John iv. 5, in the story of the meeting of Jesus and the woman of Samaria. Now Nablus (Neapolis, so named by Vespasian—Jos., B. J., iv. 8, 1). Also known as Mabortha (Pliny v. 13). The situation is a favored one, and excites the admiration of all travelers, Dr. Clarke saying, that “there is nothing finer in all Palestine.” The valley is sheltered by a high mountain on each side, and only about 1500 ft. wide, and elevated 1800 ft. above the sea. Water flows from the city E. and W. to the Jordan, and to the Mediterranean sea. The valley is full of gardens, orchards of all kinds of fruits, watered by fountains, and enlivened by the songs of birds. Abraham, on his first visit to the Land of Promise, pitched his tent under the oak of Moreh (Gen. xii. 6). Jacob bought a field of the children of Hamor (Gen. xxxiii.19), where he dug a well, about a mile from the present town, and left it as a special patrimony to Joseph (Josh. xxiv. 32). Shechem was given to Ephraim (Josh. xx. 7), was assigned to the Levites, and was made a City of Refuge (Josh. xxi.20, 21). The people assembled at Shechem to hear the law of Moses read, “half of them over against Mt. Gerizim, and half of them over against Mt. Ebal,” the chief men and the priests being around the ark in the midst (Josh. viii. 30–35); and again Joshua gathered all the tribes here just before his death (xxiv.), and delivered his last counsels. Abimelech raised a revolt in Shechem, and was made king (Judg. ix.); and Jotham denounced him and the men of Shechem from the top of Gerizim (ver. 22), and after 3 yrs. he destroyed the city and the strong tower that was in the city, but lost his own life also (ver. 53). The ten tribes made Jeroboam their king and Shechem their capital (1 K. xii. 20). When the people were carried away to Babylon the city was colonized from Assyria (2 K. xvii. 24), and again admitted strangers under Esar-haddon (Ezr. iv. 2). The present town of Nablus has about 5,000 people, living in stone houses of very ordinary style, except those of the wealthy sheikhs. There are no fine public buildings. There are not less than 80 springs of water in the valley. One of the largest, Ain Balata, rises in a chamber partly under ground, a few rods from Jacob’s well. Olives, figs, almonds, walnuts, mulberries, pomegranates, oranges, apricots, and grapes, about, besides vegetables of every sort. There are manufactories of wool, silk, and camel’s-hair cloth, and especially of soap; and the district around it is rich in wool, grain and oil. As a confirmation of the truth and accuracy, even to minute detail, it is interesting to cite the words of the original Hebrew, describing this spot, on which Joseph’s tomb stands, which are, CHELKAT HAS -SADE , meaning a dead-level; differing from SHEFELAH , (a plain), and emek (a valley), and this description is exactly correct—and besides, there is no other spot like it in all Palestine. Shechem Defiles Dinah Gen 33:18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram; and pitched his tent before the city. Gen 33:19 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for an hundred pieces of money. There was also apparently a Shechem of the Manassites. References are included here, but he is not Shechem the son of Hamor, who was the Shechem who was associated with the original naming of the location. Jos 20:4 And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them. Jos 20:5 And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime. Jdg 9:1 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying, Jdg 9:2 “Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.’”

Jdg 9:3 And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, “He is our brother.” Jdg 9:4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him. Jdg 21:16 Then the elders of the congregation said, “How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?” Jdg 21:17 And they said, “There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel. Jeroboam Becomes King of Israel and Builds Shechem in Mt. Shechem in the Psalms
Shechem appears in only two Psalms, both of which David wrote. Interestingly, both contain the phrase, “I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.” Shechem was west of the Jordan, and Succoth was east of the Jordan. Gilead and part of Manasseh were east of the Jordan, and Ephraim and Judah were west of the Jordan. Bullinger says David identifies these areas to represent the conquering of the whole of Canaan.

Jer 41:1 Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, and the princes of the king, even ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and there they did eat bread together in Mizpah. Jer 41:2 Then arose Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and the ten men that were with him, and smote Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan with the sword, and slew him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land. Mount GERIZIM
Gerizim, Strong’s 1630, Ge rîzîym, gher-ee-zeem’; plur. of an unused noun from 1629 [comp. 1511], cut up (i.e. rocky); Gerizim, a mountain of Pal.:—Gerizim. Strong’s 1629, gâraz, gaw-raz’; a prim. root; to cut off:—cut off. From Smith’s Bible Dictionary—GERIZ’IM (desert or shorn). S. of Shechem. The law was given on Mt. Sinai, and the blessing and the cursing on the two mountains Ebal and Gerizim (see EBAL). Jotham stood on G. when he denounced Abimelech (Judg. ix.). When Alexander took Palestine, he gave Sanballat (the Persian governor under Darius) permission to build a temple on Mt. G.;* and Manasseh, brother of Jaddua the high priest at Jerusalem, was made high priest at Shechem, about 420 B .C . This temple was destroyed by the Jews, 129 B .C . The ruins are still shown. The Samaritans worship here yet, without temple or altar. The view from the summit is one of the finest in Palestine, commanding the deep blue of the Great Sea, snowy Mt. Hermon, purple Gilead and Moab, and the lovely green valley of Mokhna at its foot.

Mount Ebal
Ebal Strong’s 5858, ‘Êybâl, ay-bawl’; perh. from an unused root prob. mean. to be bald; bare; Ebal, a mountain of Pal.:—Ebal. From Smith’s Bible Dictionary—E’BAL. Mt. N. of Shechem (Deut. xi. 29). Moses charged the Israelites to put the blessing on Mt. Gerizim, and the curse upon Mt. Ebal. Both mts. are now terraced and cultivated, from bottom to top, by fine gardens. Ebal is 2700 feet high; Gerizim 2600 above the sea, and about 1000 above Shechem. The valley is about 600 ft. wide.
