Job Opening Part-time Research Intern

Dates of employment October 1, 2013 May 29, 2014 (position may end earlier depending on funding) Work hours Variable: 10-15 hours a week Salary: $20.00 an hour BASIC FUNCTION: Under the supervision of a college researcher, compile summary tables and graphs profiling demographic, academic performance and survey response data. Duties may include extraction and tabulation of data from local, state and national sources; support for administration and compilation of student surveys; querying of databases; creation of summaries from literature reviews on various research topics; and support for special research studies and planning initiatives. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Provide analytical support to Institutional Research and Planning. Perform data entry and data integrity checks. Create data summaries by querying specialized databases and information systems to support research. Conduct independent data collection from existing state and national sources. Administer surveys and apply appropriate computer tools and data collection techniques to summarize and draw conclusions about target populations based on survey samples. Support strategic planning and institutional effectiveness processes by distributing reminders, assisting at events, monitoring participation, and summarizing information about ongoing processes for the Director and college leadership. Other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Research theory, methodology and applied statistics Survey design 1

Research report writing Personal computers and client-server computer systems Spreadsheet entry, calculations, and graphing capabilities Data entry and data querying ABILITY TO: Participate in analytical studies. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Analyze, interpret and summarize complex data. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Approach problems objectively. Exercise good judgment, diplomacy, tact and patience. Operate research and analytic-related computer application programs such as database systems and statistical software such as SPSS. Meet schedules and timeframes. Reason logically and creatively and apply that logic to research topics. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must have a bachelors degree in a specialization involving social science, economics, higher education, social or educational research, psychology or a related field, with some experience with conducting data analyses and/or survey research. Education including at least one graduate course each in research methods and statistics is desirable. WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbents in this position sit for extended periods of time using a personal computer with an LCD screen. Travel across campus or off campus to confer with the other programs, faculty and staff or to attend periodic meetings may be required on a daily basis. Ability to move from one work area to another as needed.
