BRIEFS
The YMCA of Burlington and
Camden Counties, a cause-driven
non-profit charitable organiza-
tion, will host the inaugural Pedal
With A Purpose Spinathon in
partnership with Reconstructive
Orthopedics on Saturday, Sept. 7
from 8 a.m. until noon at the Mt.
Laurel YMCA.
Proceeds from the four-hour
Spinathon will provide children
in local communities with YMCA
Youth Scholarships and access to
programs that will have a lasting
impact helping them learn,
grow and thrive.
In addition to Reconstructive
Orthopedics, the Spinathon is
sponsored by Ivy Rehab.
Reconstructive Orthopedics
has been a member of this com-
munity for 36 years. We ap-
proached the YMCA with this
idea because we knew that their
mission to serve the community
not only in Burlington and Cam-
den counties but throughout all of
southern New Jersey is in align-
ment with ours and we are
thrilled to be partnering in this
worthy endeavor," said Robert
Greenleaf, M.D., spine surgeon
with Reconstructive Orthopedics.
Teams may consist of up to
eight members.
The bike must be occupied for
the entire four-hour event.
Cyclists can ride in one or two
15-minute increments.
After a maximum of 30 min-
utes on the bike, the teammate
must switch.
The teams must meet the mini-
mum fundraising entry fee of
$500, in addition to a $25 team reg-
istration fee. Friends, family and
supporters can donate money to
teams directly or send a Cheer-
Gram to be announced during the
Spinathon by a DJ for $25.
Participants have three ways to
register: online, in person with
deposit and completed registra-
tion form at the Mt. Laurel YMCA
at 59 Centerton Road, Mt. Laurel,
NJ 08054, or by phone by contact-
ing Jen Segelken at (856) 234-6200
x243.

Boys soccer team prepares for season
By NICK COHEN
The Cinnaminson Sun
Despite a surprise run to the finals of
the South Jersey Group II tournament last
season and a roster filled with returning
players, the Cinnaminson High School
boys soccer team is taking the preseason
very seriously.
Were not quite there. We still have a
few guys fighting for spots. Right now, we
have 25 guys fighting for 20 positions, Pi-
rates head coach Jason Meile said.
Though some would think the expecta-
tion for this season would be to advance
further than last year, Meile said the out-
look changes year to year.
You want to set the goals for the season
as a team. I like to hear what the team
wants to accomplish, Meile said. Its a
fine line because you want to prepare for
the playoffs, but you know you need to
focus on every game as if it is the most im-
portant of the season.
Last season, the Pirates advanced to the
finals of the South Jersey Group II tourna-
ment before losing on penalty kicks to West
Deptford. The experience that the then
sophomores and juniors received will
translate to this season, Meile said.
We had a young team last year that had
a lot of sophomores and juniors. Now those
guys return hoping to build on what we did
last season, Meile said.
Leading that returning group will be
two four-year varsity lettermen, Jake
McDevitt and Andrew DeBellis, as well as
Tristan Scott, who was elected captain at
the end of last season.
Tristan has a maturity that was evident
his junior year. He fought through some in-
juries but his demeanor never changed.
Hes not a guy who will get in somebodys
face and yell at them but hell lead by exam-
ple, Meile said. His work ethic and his at-
titude make the other guys on the team
work harder.
Meile, in his second season as head
coach of the Pirates, says he feels more on
top of things this year as opposed to his
first.
Last year, the process of becoming head
coach was so quick that my head was spin-
ning a bit. This year, I feel we are much
more organized, things are much more
thought out, and I have more of a hands-on
approach with the entire program, not just
the varsity team.
Meile has also taken steps to make the
use of technology more prevalent in the
program.
please see FIRST, page 7
A
s students return to school
this week (or early next), we
all get back into a daily rou-
tine. The unofficial end to summer has
passed, and with it, a return to a nor-
mal life whether you were lucky
enough to have a three-month vaca-
tion or not.
Back to school signifies a new begin-
ning, maybe even more so for many
than the drop of the ball on New
Years. Its a time for looking ahead,
not for looking back.
Here at The Sun, back to school sig-
nifies the start of a busier time. In this
weeks paper, and in coming weeks pa-
pers, youll begin to see coverage of
the return to school from stories
about upcoming changes in the school
district to high school sports team pre-
view stories to photos of students ar-
riving, backpacks in tow, to their first
day.
And as students prepare to embark
on a new adventure in a new school
year, we remind you that The Sun is
here to shine light on your school,
your team, your son, your daughter,
your teachers, your group, your PTA,
your organization and your neighbors.
We want to congratulate Suzy on a
job well done when she is named to
her schools honor roll, deans list or
when she receives academic recogni-
tion.
We want to print photos of Johnnie
waving goodbye to mom or dad as he
enters his new school for the first
time.
We want to announce your PTAs
meeting dates and times, so that new
members can join and support the
school. We want to send a reporter to
cover that big game, big event or big
fundraiser for your school.
But we cant do all this without your
help. Please reach out to us via e-mail
(our preferred contact method) or
phone anytime you have an item for
publication or an idea for us to track
down. Our contact information is to
the right.
As we said from Day 1, this is your
newspaper. And we mean it. Play a
part in making it better by keeping us
informed. Welcome back to school!

First game of season
against rival Delran
I really want to embrace the
use of technology for our team.
For the first time, we are bringing
a videographer to help us, and we
are also using a software program
called Huddle that our football
and basketball teams have been
using. It allows our players to see
what parts of their game will be
most effective against certain
teams we play, Meile said. The
implementation of technology
into our program is definitely
something Im excited about.
Meile said hes found Cin-
naminson to be unique in that
coaches from other sports often
encourage their most athletic stu-
dents to play multiple sports.
All the coaches really work
well together and want to see
each others teams succeed, so
there is a lot of encouraging our
best athletes to play sports across
all the seasons, Meile said.
Cinnaminsons schedule al-
lows them to see how they fare
against some of the regions best
teams but also doesnt allow them
to take any opponent lightly.
Our division is a good meas-
uring tool for how we are playing.
We think we can compete with
any team we play, but we also
know these teams can beat us if
we look past them, Meile said.
The Pirates wont have any
time to ease into the season as the
first game on the schedule is
against heated rival Delran.
Were getting to it right out of
the gate, Meile said with a laugh.
It will be fun.
