Fitness center brings community together
By CANDICE ROBERTS
The Delran Sun
A fitness center brings togeth-
er a community in the Delran
Township School District.
Andrew Estrada, the athletic
director for Delran High School
and the supervisor of health and
physical education for K-12, has
been instrumental in the design
and implementation of the fit-
ness center at the school, which
has become a community event,
bringing together students,
teachers and staff.
Included in the fitness center
are three super racks with the
Delran bear logo, three elliptical
machines, three treadmills, two
stationary bikes, one recumbent
bike, seven individual resistance
machines and a multiple-use jun-
gle gym.
The business administrator
split the cost between the 2011-
2012 and 2012-2013 school year
budgets.
Funding between two sepa-
rate school year budgets was very
creative, Estrada said.
The fitness center flooring in-
cludes rolled rubber, made of the
recycled rubber from sneakers,
according to Estrada.
There was a change in admin-
istration while the fitness center
was being designed, and Estrada
checked in with the business ad-
ministrator and superintendent.
Estrada is happy with the way it

Council accepts $65K
Community Development
Block Grant at meeting
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Delran Sun
The council accepted a $65,000
Community Development Block
Grant at last weeks meeting.
The grant will be used to pay
for a flapper valve to help curb
flooding from the Rancocas
Creek.
When it rains, it gets flooded
pretty badly, said Mayor Ken
Paris. At least a half a block is af-
fected.
According to Paris, the flood-
ing has caused damage to proper-
ties in the area, spurring an out-
reach to FEMA, the Army Corps
and the governors office.
There wasnt much those of-
fices could do, however the grant
will pay for the valve, which is ex-
pected to help with flooding.
The valve project recently re-
ceived state Department of Envi-
ronmental Protection approval.
The township is going out to
bid for the project.
According to Paris, residents
are looking into raising their
houses as well to solve the issue.
In other news:
The township council is con-
sidering passing a resolution al-
lowing the council to include lan-
guage that holds bidders respon-
sible for their employees to have
proper training.
This language would indicate
people would have to have gone
through the proper training,
said council president Gary

Adding the fitness center
a positive change for district
came out.
I was free to steer the ship,
he said.
The alumni are jealous they
did not have access to the fitness
center as students, according to
Estrada.
Delran High School alumni
participating in college sports
can use the fitness center on
their college breaks, though.
Estrada said he thought they
would have an increase in ath-
letes using the fitness center, and
has now seen an increase in staff
using it as well.
There is a community feel,
he said.
Barbara Edwards, secretary of
curriculum, athletics and tech-
nology, is part of a group of sec-
retaries that uses the fitness cen-
ter three times a week.
The elliptical is my favorite,
she said.
Superintendent Dr. Patricia
Camp said she is thrilled that
the district was able to add the
new fitness center. It has already
done positive things for the dis-
trict, she said, including adding
teaching stations for physical ed-
ucation classes, adding an exer-
cise facility to support the athlet-
ic teams and providing a place for
both students and staff to exer-
cise.
Jim Puglia, a high school math
teacher, football coach and
weight room coordinator for the
district, said the staff and stu-
dents have the opportunity to use
the fitness center at the same
time after school.
Sports players have the oppor-
tunity to work out Monday
through Friday. Im there for ad-
vice, helpful tips and to super-
vise, he said. We have the op-
portunity for a different relation-
ship with our students, by work-
ing out with them after school.
We are a more fit staff. Basi-
cally, we are the best looking staff
in South Jersey, he joked.

Catrambone.
Cinnaminson Mayor William
"Ben" Young attended the meet-
ing to voice his concerns with the
resolution and financial impact it
may have.
Young said he was concerned
vendors would not comply with
the restrictions put in place by
the township.
I can almost guarantee local
vendors cannot comply, and it
will increase costs, Young said,
adding it may decrease the bid-
der pool, cost more tax dollars
and add time to projects.
According to Catrambone, the
resolution simply gives the coun-
cil the opportunity to insert the
language in contracts when it
chooses.
A decision is slated for the next
meeting.
James Bauer, secretary for
the Delran Board of Fire Com-
missioners, attended the meeting
to provide council with updates.
Bauer indicated the fourth An-
nual Smokin Hot 5k Run/Walk is
coming up on Sept. 7.
Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.,
and the race is scheduled to begin
9:30 a.m. at the Delran Municipal
Complex. The race will feature
electronic chip timing, t-shirts
for all runners and walkers and
breakfast after the race for all
participants. For more informa-
tion on the race, visit www.del-
ranfire.org/5k.
Bauer spoke highly of his vol-
unteers, with two of his men re-
cruited for full-time positions in
other states, including the
Philadelphia Fire Department.
If you want to make firefight-
ing a career, you have to go out of
state, Bauer said. Were very
proud of our training. Im so im-
pressed with our guys.
According to Catrambone, a
joint shopping center will be
coming to Delran and Cinnamin-
son. He did not provide a time-
line on the project.
Its great to see businesses in
Delran, Catrambone said. Peo-
ple are welcoming that.
The next township council
meeting is scheduled for Tuesday,
Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Delran
Municipal Building.

A
s students return to school
this week (or early next), we
all get back into a daily rou-
tine. The unofficial end to summer has
passed, and with it, a return to a nor-
mal life whether you were lucky
enough to have a three-month vaca-
tion or not.
Back to school signifies a new begin-
ning, maybe even more so for many
than the drop of the ball on New
Years. Its a time for looking ahead,
not for looking back.
Here at The Sun, back to school sig-
nifies the start of a busier time. In this
weeks paper, and in coming weeks pa-
pers, youll begin to see coverage of
the return to school from stories
about upcoming changes in the school
district to high school sports team pre-
view stories to photos of students ar-
riving, backpacks in tow, to their first
day.
And as students prepare to embark
on a new adventure in a new school
year, we remind you that The Sun is
here to shine light on your school,
your team, your son, your daughter,
your teachers, your group, your PTA,
your organization and your neighbors.
We want to congratulate Suzy on a
job well done when she is named to
her schools honor roll, deans list or
when she receives academic recogni-
tion.
We want to print photos of Johnnie
waving goodbye to mom or dad as he
enters his new school for the first
time.
We want to announce your PTAs
meeting dates and times, so that new
members can join and support the
school. We want to send a reporter to
cover that big game, big event or big
fundraiser for your school.
But we cant do all this without your
help. Please reach out to us via e-mail
(our preferred contact method) or
phone anytime you have an item for
publication or an idea for us to track
down. Our contact information is to
the right.
As we said from Day 1, this is your
newspaper. And we mean it. Play a
part in making it better by keeping us
informed. Welcome back to school!

We want all of your news announce-
ments, event notices, accomplishments
and photos throughout the school year.
Be sure to send them
in to us, and well share them
with the rest of the town.
What is Cub Scouting? Cub Scouting is
fun! No matter what grade you are in, first
through fifth, it can be a blast. Do you like
to learn by doing? This is just the place.
You can learn to tie knots, set up a tent,
shoot a bow and arrow (archery). Have you
ever cooked a meal on a campfire? Sent a
secret code to a buddy? Built a birdhouse?
Played Ultimate? Hiked? Earn rewards for
doing these things in Cub Scouts.
Cub Scouts belong to packs and dens. As
a Cub Scout, you will be part of your own
pack. The pack is divided into smaller
groups called dens. Each den has about six
to eight boys. All of the Cub Scouts in your
den are in the same grade and may even go
to the same school.
The Cub Scout pack belongs to a church,
a school or some other group of people in
your community or neighborhood. This
group makes sure your pack has good adult
leaders, a place to meet, and exciting things
to do. The group gets help from the Boy
Scouts of America, which is part of Scout-
ing around the world.
Cub Scouts do things and go places. Have
you been to the local police station and
talked to the policemen on duty? Or visited
the fire station and sat in the drivers seat
of the pumper truck? These are some of
the places you might go.
Cub Scouts earn awards. Each time you
complete an accomplishment or learn a
new skill, you will be rewarded. Sometimes
the reward is a bead, belt loop, patch or pin.
Sometimes it is a smile on your parents
faces to see you grow and learn.
For more than 50 years, Cub Scout Pack
17 has been serving the Delran area. Often-
times, maintaining the momentum of a
successful pack is a challenge. September
is our recruitment month! We will be hav-
ing several recruiting events throughout
September. Here is a list of recruiting
events we will be having:
Sept. 17 - Open House at Delran Fire-
house No. 231, 9 S. Bridgeboro St., Delran, 7
p.m.
Sept. 17 - Delran Farmers Market, 4 p.m.
6 p.m. - We will have a tent set up to an-
swer questions and show the types of activ-
ities in which we participate.
Sept. 29 - Delran Day, noon 4 p.m. - We
will have a tent set up to answer questions
and show the types of activities in which
we participate.
We will also be sending flyers home with
students from Millbridge and DIS the first
week of school.
If parents are unable to attend any of
these events, contact Jim Thomas, assis-
tant cubmaster, via email at pack17del-
ran@gmail.com or by phone at 316-9874.

FALL AND
8PRINO
The following was taken from
reports on file with the Delran
Police Department:
On Saturday, Aug. 24, at 5:32
a.m., the Delran Fire Depart-
ment was dispatched to Lowes
Home Improvement Center,
Fairview Boulevard in Delran
for a fire alarm activation.
Upon arrival, no fire was dis-
covered, however the police de-
partment officers discovered
that the business was burglar-
ized overnight.
Upon arrival of store employ-
ees, and after an inventory, two
Dyson vacuum cleaners were
reported stolen, having a com-
bined value of $1,200.
During review of the store
surveillance video, it was deter-
mined that a male subject wear-
ing dark clothing scaled the gar-
den center fence and then
smashed a store window using a
mallet to gain entry. The video
shows the male subject remove
the two vacuum cleaners from
the shelf and exit through the
entry window. The suspect
climbed over the fence to exit
the garden area, and during his
flight dropped one vacuum
cleaner behind. Investigation
will continue.
