Gatekeeping Practices of Nurses in Operating Rooms Robin Riley, Elizabeth Manias Background of the Study/Rationale Lack of knowledge, lack of self confidence, lack of experience, and lack of trust of everyone to the team can influence everyones perception and insight about their team and the thought of them working together. Communication is a very important key for to the whole surgical team and communication is also the main reason why the team is having a hard time coordinating and working together with competency. Both of the study are focused on the communication of the health team members most particularly the nurse doctor relationship inside the operating room. Statement of the Problem Biblio 1: Will the 1-3 minute preoperative interprofessional team briefing with a checklist be effective to support communication in the OR? Biblio 2: Is the gatekeeping task of the nurses in the operating room a good way to maintain a sense of open communication and trust not only with the doctors/surgeons but also with the whole health care team members? Summary Biblio 1: Researchers observed 11 general surgeons and al members of the OR teams working in those surgeons including 116 OR nurses and 74 anesthesiologist, most OR nurses were assigned with different general surgeons and most anesthesiologist came from different institutions and services. The research was done in three tertiary hospitals in Toronto, Canada. The researchers focused on getting the data on the interpersonal skills of the health care team members in the operating room most particularly on the nurse-doctor relationship. Consent forms were signed by the health care team member for them to know that theyre being observed and all the data that are observed by the researchers will be used for their research. Biblio 2: Data were taken from three different operating room department, participants are composed of 11 operating room nurses who are tasked to be an informant by the researchers to report to them their cultural group and social environment place assignment. The researchers studied the view of the operating room nurses as gatekeepers and also studied the insights of the doctors with regards to the job of the nurses as gatekeepers. Findings Biblio 1: There are three different forms of silences in the operating room, absence of communication in the health team; not responding the questions and requests; and speaking quietly and not being understood by the health care team. Biblio 2: The nurses are known to keep the documents private to the person who have no business with it even the doctors who are not involved in the procedure, another is
