Miley Cyrus' performance on the VMAs, and i turned the TV off. at first i thought she looked ugly and stupid, to put it bluntly. just trying to follow a trend and a style that is very current today, very in and prevalent. and when i use the word ugly it is no insult to her appearance. she is a beautiful young woman. then i saw her performance again and i judged it solely on its own. for what she was trying to show, it had value purely from a perspective of self expression. she did very well, she out performed even Madonna. her moves were perfect for that particular style, everything about her was pretty unforgettable. yet i still did not like the performance at all. there was an unattractive element to the whole thing, and i suppose that was actually the point. to look somewhat demonic and dark, like a female she devil icon. which she did a little too well this culture embraces the darkness, it embraces s and m as a valid way to express itself in music, books, movies. that has always been with us, more so now than ever, even by younger groups. when i was a kid and a teenager, i liked music that was on the edge, fierce, disturbing, i liked Alice Cooper, who for my generation was one of the most disturbing performers. i thought he was fun. today he may be considered pure fun as well, harmless, just part of the act of performing. yet as time goes on, i notice more and more, certain styles are normal, everyday, acceptable, and deeply in our lives. sign of the times? maybe. good or bad? i think both, but extremes can never be entirely healthy. just think. if sexualizing in music, TV, movies, ways of dressing and looking and acting, is par for the course, what does that do to the rest of society? to us? does it hurt the way we see each other, or children? does child sex abuse rise? human trafficking? having sex and babies at earlier ages? i understand that sex is a part of life, and a beautiful aspect of being human. sacred even, for some. yet it can also be destructive a powerful force that can harm us. because of its power. double edge. if you notice, when sexuality, sexual deviance, extreme behaviors, illicit, outrageous, become acceptable, oftentimes, other behaviors accompany addictions, illegal activities.
no religious condemnation, here, not even mentioning or thinking about religion - just what i have observed, read, seen i once mentioned and i may have written as well - when certain sexual behaviors and addictions, etc. are engaged in, what does that mean? does it mean something about us as human beings? even though people use the word freedom - free to be what i want, do what i want - no judgements, no rules, no restrictions -freedom is never free - it always has a price - and true freedom may not look the way we think it does. i think it means something may be wrong with said behaviors. something not healthy for us - hence the addictions, the illegal activities the secrecy, the way families and family loyalty - children, wives, fidelity, self control - may often get pushed away. almost like our souls, minds and hearts are telling us, showing us, something we need to look at closely. i am no prude. i just judge according to what i feel, see, hear, read about and think. some things tend to weaken us as human beings, as family members, as husbands, wives. i do not like repression, either, religious lifestyles that are extremely restrictive. very harmful and life killing. not good for anyone, especially children, who will rebel so when i see the trend in music, in videos, i think on these things, and i know embracing darkness, embracing all aspects of life and living, can be powerful. yet be careful how you embrace. and try to be different. if a lot of females seem to be in their lingerie onstage - acting like dominatrixes dare to like or be different. go in the opposite direction. if music seems like it comes from the depths of hell - go for something softer, prettier, more meaningful. of course, we have all kinds of music and styles, which is wonderful to see. there is diversity, clearly, i see it and i love it. yet i see many performers and people in general following a certain style which i note above - and it seems like the popular fashion - never follow because it seems enticing. do not be afraid to go against a current trend, whether in listening to music, in your choice of clothes, in how you act. we may be expressing something deeper in our choices here - something about society, about where we are headed. as i mentioned, the sexualization at times, the embracing of a darker element in us. it is a darker time in our world, and yet more hopeful, more complex, more choices and freedom as individuals i think for the sake of the truly innocent, in our children, and in us, we just need to hold on to something better - not go to extremes. because what is in our culture, what is shown on TV and movies, pervades our lives and our beings in a very profound unseen unexpected way. let the other side get a
voice - both in yourself and in every aspect of culture and life. when things begin to lean toward one particular voice or way, move it in the other direction for the sake of clarity, fairness and balance i was saying how in ancient times Rome and Greece embraced the idea of living with all kinds of sexual behaviors and activities - and the fall occurred. because inherent in that kind of lifestyle is decadence. Decadence will almost always corrupt a system, a society, a human being. it can be glamourous, even beautiful, nonetheless, not healthy for what is inside you. to stay strong, you need health. and health implies moderation, self control, values, restraint, all things in their place and in their time. thanks for reading!
