Season Scouting Report Sam Houston State (9/7/2013) Last Year and So far This Season Went to the

e NCAA Division 1 National Championship game, but lost. Went 11-4 (6-1 in conference play) Coming off of the best two seasons in their 97 year history and won their past two conference titles Outscored other teams 643 to 138 last year. Returning 11 starters and 7 All-Southland Honors (their conference) Coming off of a 74-0 win against Houston Baptist. Offense Type o Run a pistol style formation with many variations o Heavily lean towards running the ball 365/465 yards last week was rushing o Sometimes run the bearcat (wildcat) o Returning 6 starters Quarterback o Brian Bell 5/13 last week against HBU Was an efficient passer last year though This doesnt seem to be the norm Only threw 4 interceptions last year against FBS schools (and 22 touchdowns) Which sounds good until you think about how much SHSU runs the ball. Team leader and veteran player All time winningest QB in SHSU history (30-8) Most yards, passing yards, and touchdowns in SHSU history Running-back o Timothy Flanders SHSU all time rushing and scoring leader Has rushed for more than 100 yards in 25 games o Richard Sincere (wildcat back and wide receiver) Look to see him switch back and forth between these two positions. 2011 Southland Conference player of the year o Steven Hicks led the team in rushing last week against HBU o Have two other running backs that will see some game time too (notable one being Keshawn Hill) Wide Receiver

o Chance Nelson and Torrance Williams are the two best receivers Tight End o Cannot find much information. Appears that there is one tight end transfer from Texas A&M and one or two other tight ends. o They appear to be average players who are utilized mostly for blocking. Offensive Line o Biggest question mark on the offense o Only one returning starter Strengths o Solid running-backs o Experienced quarterback and wide receivers Weaknesses o Inexperienced offensive line

Defense Type o Dominant in the past two years (only allowed 12.0 points per game) One of the best (if not the best) defenses in the FCS last year o Lost over half of their starters from last year though. o Returning 5 starters o Shut out Houston Baptist last week (74-0). Held HBU to only 90 yards o Just got a new defensive coordinator (Mike Collins) o Hard to tell how good of a defense they really have this early in the season and with a new defensive coordinator. Defensive Line o Returning three quality starters Jarret Brown (21 career starts) at defensive end Andrew Weaver (17 career starts) at defensive end Gary Lorance (34 career starts) at tackle Linebacker o Jesse Beauchamp (LB) has been impressive thus far o Returning a lot of linebackers from last year Defensive Back o Bookie Sneed (CB) has been impressive thus far o Sneed is the only returning CB o No veteran safeties Strengths o Defensive line o Linebackers o Rush defense Weaknesses o Safety

o Cornerback o Pass defense is expected to be bad due to lack of experience, but had three interceptions last week (Hard to say) Special Teams New punter (averaged 44 yards per punt last week) New kicker (made one field goal from 41 yards and all 8 extra points last week) New return specialist (had one return for 50 yards last week) Key Players QBBrian Bell RBFlanders, Hicks, Hill WRTorrance Williams DL-Gary Lorance Key Matchups SHSU inexperienced secondary against our young receivers Our veteran offensive line against their veteran defensive line Our linebackers (inexperienced and several suspensions) and defensive line (several suspensions) against their run heavy offense o We will be missing 2/3 defensive ends (Hall and Stansbury). o We will still be missing out defensive leader in senior Steve Jenkins What to Watch For Kicking Game o Will Bertolet continue to make extra points and field goals? Kicking game will be important in close conference games later this season. What is happening to our defense?!!!!!!!!!! o Last week many of Rices extended plays were results of missing basic defensive assignments and poor play calls Ex. Not realizing the offensive guard and tackle switched positions, not minding which side of the field the tight end moved to, blitzing from the wrong side, etc Either Mark Syder (our DC) called some bad plays or Rices OC figured out of defense (both are equally as frightening). o Will Mark Snyder make sure the defense understands our scheme more soundly? o Will we continue to have so many missed tackles? Charles Ross was bigbut not that big (235 pounds) o Will our defense be able to adapt and recover from missing from 5 defensive starters? o Will our freshmen at linebacker, defensive line, and cornerback continue to step up and improve? We played a total of 11 freshmen on defense last week

Very limited offensive plays/strategies o Expect Clarence McKinney and Jake Spavital to continue to have a very basic and limited play selection. (This is on purpose to save our better plays/strategies for more difficult games). How will our freshmen receivers do this game? o We will probably play 3 true freshmen receivers this game (Jeremy Tabuyo, LaQuvionte Gonzalez and Ja'Quay Williams).

What Else You Should Know Kirby Ennis (DL) and Floyd Raven (S) WILL be playing this game. Deshazor Everett (CB) and Dashason Hall (DE) WILL BE OUT for HALF the game. Steve Jenkins (DB), Gavin Stansbury (DE), and Devante Harris (CB) will be OUT for this game. Drew Kaser had a 77-yard punt last game! He averaged 63 yards punting in 3 attempts. Was it a fluke or is he really THAT good? There are rumors that Ricky Seals-Jones is out for this game due to reinjuring his knee. He is not listed on the depth chart for this game either. Brandon Williams (RB) was out last game. No official word on whether or not he will be back for this game. If Johnny continues to cause trouble, look for Matt Joekel (who did VERY well last game) to get significant playing time. SHSU is used to playing in front of crowds of less than 10,000 people. Expect the 12th Man to help us BTHO them. The Bottom Line We show up. We get another W. Our offense runs simple, but effective plays. Our defense continues to improve. Sumlin leads us to another easy victory and we move on to focus our attention towards Alabama on September 14th. Prediction 57-24
