Dan Bates is now
charged with leading a
McQuaid tradition of
power running with
hopes of its first title
since the 1970s
T
o say that Dan
Bates has en-
joyed his 30-year
coaching career
in Section 5
might be an un-
derstatement.
The veteran offensive line coach
has eagerly awaited the fall so he
could get back on the football
field to work not only with some
of the areas top players, but out-
standing head coaches.
This offseason though, Bates
knew he needed to be more
than just the right-hand man on
the sideline. He
wanted to take the
lead at one of Section
5s most consistent
programs, and help
them end a section-
al drought of 25
years.
Bates took over at
McQuaid this offsea-
son, hoping to lead
the Knights to their
first sectional title
since 1978. McQuaid
hosts Canisius (Sec-
tion 6) at 7:30 p.m.
Friday in their sea-
son opener.
At first I didn t
want the job, after a
while they hadn t
named a head coach and I revis-
ited the conversation I had
with (the schools administra-
tion) and decided to step up and
take it, said Bates, who joined
the McQuaid coaching staff in
2010. It was my way of doing
something for the school and
my part. We have a bunch of
great young men and they need
to be coached.
Bates is one of the areas most
highly respected line coaches, as
his Knights have paved the way
for some of Section 5s top run-
ning backs in recent seasons, in-
cluding the Jenkins brothers
and Cory Parker. You can expect
the same brand of smashmouth
football fromBates, who called
this offense a running backs
dream because tailbacks often
receive 20 to 30 carries per
game.
He fits in with what Mc-
Quaid is, said senior kicker
Will Mahar, who is being re-
cruited by several Division I
schools. Hes a great guy who
has good faith. Coach Bates is
selfless. He is always helping out,
extending his hand. We had a lot
of seniors step up in the offsea-
son and take leadership in our
workouts too.
Senior Dave DAngelo will
look to carry the load for the
running backs, with help from
fullbacks Cole Purpura and
Zach Poudrier. The talented re-
turning skill position players
will cause plenty of nightmares
for defensive co-
ordinators.
Quarterbacks
John Vanden
Brul and Mark
Nozzi return af-
ter seeing signif-
icant playing
time last season.
Mahar is also ex-
pected to be the
teams top receiv-
er.
We are pretty
well-rounded,
said Purpura,
who also starts
at linebacker.
Our defense is
pretty good.
Everything is
coming together, not just this
week but at camps over the
summer.
Despite 15 returning starters
(eight on offense, seven de-
fense), questions remain about
the Knights offensive and defen-
sive lines, where the teamcould
have inexperienced players in
key slots to open the season.
Seniors Miles Powe and Josh
Moore will anchor the offensive
and defensive lines.
Poudrier and Clement Lewis
will join Purpura at linebacker
in the teams 4-3 defense. DAn-
gelo and Mahar lead the second-
ary.
We had good teamchemistry
last year, but this year we had to
work on it, Vanden Brul said.
So far in camp it has come to-
gether much better than we
thought it would.
The Knights certainly had
their chances to break the sec-
tional title drought in four years
under former head coach Bob-
by Bates. McQuaid lost twice in
the sectional finals and suffered
a double-overtime loss to even-
tual Class Achampion Eastridge
in the semifinals last fall.
The Knights have their work
cut out for them early in the
year, as they open with one of
Section 6s top programs. Mc-
Quaid opens Rochester City
Athletic Association play against
East, who defeated the Knights
in week six last season.
We play tough games, but we
are going to do our very best,
DAngelo said. We expect to
win, be fearless, play our game
and see what happens. We have
to play with no regrets.

The 3 teams
from Greece
are all looking
to take the

WAR
The three-way cross-town rivarly that exists between the three high schools in Greece Athena, Arcadia
and Olympia is alive and well. While claiming bragging rights is important, all three programs have their
sights set on bringing a championship back to the town. Jack Haley | Messenger Post Media
TEAM PREVIEW
13
T
radition, pride
and hard work
are three things
that define the
community of
Greece, and also
the core princi-
ples of the three head coaches of
the varsity football teams in the
area. The Olympia Spartans,
Arcadia Titans and Athena Tro-
jans all travel a similar road as
they battle for area supremacy
and a sectional title.
The history and success of the
football teams in Greece runs
deep, with more than 20 league
championships in the past 40
years between the three. Sec-
tional titles in high school are
hard to come by in any sport,
but football might be the most
difficult with the smaller num-
ber of classes and tougher lev-
el of competition from top to
bottom. Olympias last section-
al crown came back in 1997, Ar-
cadias in 1988 and Athenas in
1981, (Aquinas, which draws
heavily from the Greece dis-
trict, has won eight sectional ti-
tles since 2000), and every year
each coach and player gives
their all in hopes their school is
the next to hoist that illusive
banner.
There is a great sense of
pride in this community when it
comes to sports, and especially
in football, said Arcadia head
coach John Lockhart, who is in
his 12th year with the Titans.
Regardless of stature or posi-
tion, you can never count on a
win when you face another
Greece team. The intensity,
toughness and emotion runs
much higher in those games.
TimHill is in his 18th year as
head coach at Greece Olympia,
and the Spartans have brought
home two league titles, as well
as the programs lone sectional
crownwhile onhis watch. Work-
ing through adversity, building
mental toughness, commitment
and dedication are all required
to be successful in the game of
football and are all essential
parts of Coach Hills approach to
helping his players realize their
potential and prepare for life be-
yond high school.
We set many teamgoals inthe
beginning of the season, and
whenAthena or Arcadia showup
on the schedule you knowthose
games will always mean a little
extra, said Hill. The players,
coaches and the fans all take a
great deal of pride in their
schools and those games. Greece
has a lot of great coaches at all
levels, and in all sports, as we
need to remember the common
goal of helping the kids in our
town become better citizens,
community members and peo-
ple as we begin talking about an
improved facility for the town
and its teams to take pride in.
All three Greece teams play
their home games on their own
fields, though each home game
for every team must be sched-
uled for Saturday afternoon be-
cause none of the schools have
the lights. In an era inundated
with budget cuts to sports, arts,
music and nearly everything
else, the committee dedicated to
bringing Greece an updated
sports facility hope to affordably,
objectively and economically
provide its teams a home field
they can be proud to defend.
Qualifying for sectionals and
earning a home game are always
two of our goals when we start
the season, said Athena coach
Rob Cerone, who is in his 19th
season as head coach and also
sits on the committee working to
get Greece a newfacility. Every
game against one of your cross-
town rivals is big and getting a
win against another Greece
school is always good to look
back on at the end of the season.
All three coaches believe that
football is a great vehicle to help
guide kids on the right path
and teach them commitment,
sacrifice, adversity, discipline,
toughness (both physical and
mental) and howto work togeth-
er. They have faced each other
numerous times on the grid-
iron and share a mutual respect
for one another despite never
giving an inch to get a win.
With 21 teams in the Monroe
County football league, Arca-
dia and Olympia will battle for
a championship in Division III
while Athena will look to bring
home the Division II crown.
The three schools will cross
paths onmore thanone occasion
during the regular season when
Arcadia travels to Olympia for a
showdown on Sept. 28 and the
Trojans will play host to the
Spartans on Oct. 12. Each game
will not only play a role in which
team becomes the toast of the
town but where they will be
seededcome sectional time, as all
three schools find themselves as
one of 15 teams competing for
the Class A crown.
We always focus on team
chemistry and put an emphasis
on family and treating each oth-
er with respect before anything
else, added Lockhart. We have
so many great coaches not only
at Arcadia but all throughout
Greece, and every time you get
a win against a colleague who
you respect it means a little ex-
tra.
All three schools are fortunate
enough to have had a coach in
place for a number of years,
and that stability shows the ath-
letes, their parents and the com-
munity that we are dedicated to
providing the best coaching and
teaching possible to all our play-
ers, added Cerone. Every time
you hit the field you are working
to be the best in the league, the
section and the town.
Olympia and Arcadia will compete in Monroe County Division 3
this season, while Athena plays in Monroe County Division 2.

TEAM PREVIEW
F
or a teamthat was
seconds away
from playing in
the state semifi-
nals last year,
Eastridge has a lot
of question marks
in 2013.
The Lancers lost 19 seniors
from a team that hasnt lost a
regular-season game since Sep-
tember 2010 and rolled to 10
straight wins and a Section 5
Class Achampionshipa year ago.
Eastridge eventually fell to Sec-
tion 6 champion Sweet Home in
overtime of the Western Re-
gional final.
The uncertainty
doesn t faze the
Eastridge players.
Call me crazy, but
I think states is our
goal this year, sen-
ior slotback/safety
DAngelo Moraza
said.
Among the voids
needing to be filled:
running back Jere-
miah Ortiz (1,474
total yards, 21
touchdowns), quar-
terback Alec Mor-
tillaro (9 yards per
carry, 22 total
touchdowns), line-
backer Jake Allen
(14.5 tackles for
loss), and linemen
Chyron Brown-Wallace and Alex
Officer (D-I Pittsburgh).
The Lancers return E.J. White
a senior getting Division I
looks and juniors Greg Herrera
and Nico Piacentini on the line,
along with senior tight
end/linebacker Jayshawn
Pinkard.
Seniors Dan Sprague and
Jametrius Lewis, a transfer from
Waterloo, are battling to replace
Mortillaro under center.
The rest of the offensive back-
field, however, is even more un-
clear. Coach Chad Green is look-
ing at several players to replace
Ortiz and slotback Nate Corbett.
Two other transfers junior
Jayvon Hampton (Greece Arca-
dia) and sophomore C.J. Turn-
er (Webster Schroeder) are ex-
pected to compete for significant
roles in the backfield or slot,
along with Moraza and fellow
seniors Markayl Armstrong and
Alejandro Cruz.
Green, nowin his eighth sea-
son with a record of 47-19, said
roster turnover is nothing newto
him and his staff.
Every year for every high
school football team it does
change up quite a bit, unless you
do have a lot of returners, he
said. Having their veteran lead-
ership is something that were
going to have those young guys
stepinandmake sure they do get
to that level.
Moraza said the
traditionally up-
tempo Wing-T
Eastridge offense
will rely even
more on speed
this year, as will
the defense.
If youre not a
fast-paced de-
fense, its going to
be hard to keep
up with us, and
on defense we fly
to the ball every
single play, he
said. Were not
trying to mope
around that we
lost players. Were
coming with what
weve got. We put
in new stuff this
year that will help our talent, and
were just doing things to fit
what we have this year.
While trying to look forward,
the Lancers havent been able to
shake the memories of that
heartbreaking 28-21 loss to
Sweet Home last November.
But instead of dwelling on what
could have been, theyre using it
as motivation.
We make sure that were
ready for five quarters of foot-
ball, Moraza said. When the
time comes and people get
thrown in positions, weve got to
be ready to play, because it still
sticks with us.
Thats the only thing I keep
thinking about, Pinkard said. I
dont want to lose any games. I
want to go undefeated.
As his teamprepares to face a
Monroe County Division III
schedule full of familiar oppo-
nents including a Canandaigua
team the Lancers pummeled
47-7 in last years sectional final
Green is keeping his expecta-
tions broad.
I dont make comparisons
between the two teams, he said.
But having those young guys
step in and be productive, be
competitive and have good lead-
ership, thats what Im looking
for.
Moraza said the teamrealizes
it cant be complacent if it wants
to top last seasons success.
We cant just think that since
we won last year that its just go-
ing to come easy to us this year,
he said. What we do in the
locker room and on the field,
were working ourselves to know
that we have to fight for every-
thing this year, and every team
is after us this year. We have a big
target on our back.
As long as we play to our
systemand dont ruin ourselves,
no team can beat us this year. I
Were not trying
to mope around
that we lost play-
ers. Were coming
with what weve
got, we put in
new stuff this
year that will help
our talent, and
were just doing
things to fit what
we have this year.

T
he 2012 season
couldn t have
gotten off to a
worse start for
the East
Rochester/Gana
nda football
team. Playing on the road
against Wayne, the defending
Finger Lakes East League cham-
pions, the Eagles easily marched
down the field and scored a
touchdown on the first posses-
sion of the game.
The Bomber players could al-
ready hear the rumblings from
their disappointed fan base.
I could hear it on the sideline,
people said another bad season
for the ERBombers, said Zach
Hauser, who will start at quar-
terback for ER/Gananda again
this season. After that it was like
we came out and buried them.
The Bombers quickly bounced
back, as they returned home
with a 40-12 victory. The win
was only the beginning of what
turned out to be a special season.
ER/Gananda won the next
three games by a combined
score of 158-12. The Bombers
then lost to eventual league
champion Geneva, but they
showed a keen ability to put de-
feat behind them as they even-
tually won the Class B title.
ER/Gananda will take aim
at a Class C title this fall as
they host Midlakes at 7 p.m. on
Friday intheir seasonopener. An
excellent group of returning
players has fans of the program
hoping the team can not only
win another sectional title, but
gain an elusive league title.
The returning skill position
players are going to be key for
us, said Dennis Greco, who is in
his 21st season as a head coach.
We have a ton of depth at run-
ning back. Its a great problem
to have. Right now we have to
see how our offensive line is
going to perform.
The Bombers never struggled
to score points last season, par-
ticularly against Livonia in the
Class B championship when
they scored 48. ER/Ganandas
biggest strength last season was
running the ball and their potent
ground attack will play a key role
in determining if they can fulfill
their preseason goals.
Seniors AkeemHosang, Jake
Miller and Nate Teeter lead the
stout Bomber backfield. Hauser
has excellent targets in wide re-
ceivers AndrewFischer and Ri-
ley Palmer.
Our team is mostly younger
guys, but we do have some expe-
rience, said Brendan McDer-
mott, senior linebacker/offensive
tackle. We have a good, solid
group of seniors. The younger
guys knowwhat they are doing.
Senior center Chase Reeves
and sophomore Hayden Ricci
will look to anchor an offensive
line that lost three starters. Mc-
Dermott and Alex Brothers are
expected to start up front.
The Bombers should score
plenty of points, but in a league
where teams can score in bunch-
es, can they make enough stops
to win games?
Weve just been trying to
teach our young guys the funda-
mentals, the basic techniques
and how to go hard every play,
Greco said. We want to im-
prove every day and bring (the
young players) along slowly, but
win at the same time.
The move down to Class Cfor
sectionals will mean plenty of
new faces come sectional time,
including Livingston County
powers Hornell and LeRoy.
ER/Gananda has not enjoyed
success against the LCAA in
sectionals, having lost to LeRoy
twice and Cal-Mumonce in past
finals.
It doesnt really matter where
you play in sectionals, Teeter
said. You still have to play your
games and you have to winto get
into sectionals. Class C is going
to be tough.
