com SCPSS APPLAUDS US INTENT TO STRIKE SYRIAN REGIME
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Syrian Center Supports President Obama’s Decision to Hold Assad Accountable The Syrian Center for Political and Strategic Studies (SCPSS) announces its full support for US President Barack Obama’s recent declaration of intent to conduct military action against Assad regime military assets in Syria. Last Saturday, the president declared that he would request approval from Congress for the use of force in Syria in response to chemical weapons attacks perpetrated by Assad regime forces on Eastern Ghouta in Damascus on August 21. According to reports from local hospitals and human rights organizations, more than 1400 Syrian civilians were killed in the attacks. The strikes left thousands injured, including many women and children. These chemical rocket strikes, which rank as the second largest chemical attacks perpetrated in history, represent one more predictable escalation in the Assad regime’s consistent use of internationally banned weapons and lethal force against civilians. The war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Assad regime over the past two and a half years, and chemical attacks similar to black Wednesday’s, will continue without decisive action from the international community. “It is necessary for world leaders, particularly President Obama, to hold dictators such as President Assad responsible for these brutal chemical attacks.” said SCPSS Executive Director Radwan Ziadeh. “I urge members of Congress to pass the resolution authorizing use of force in Syria as soon as possible in order to prevent the further loss of innocent Syrian lives.” Since the Syrian Revolution began in 2011, more than 100,000 Syrians have lost their lives in the resulting violence. In addition, within the past week, the number of refugees fleeing from Syria has reached the 2 million mark, with another 4.25 million internally displaced inside Syria. Therefore, SCPSS urges the United States, in concert with an international coalition of the willing, to bring a hasty end to the Syria conflict and prevent such horrific chemical weapons attacks as those inflicted on Eastern Ghouta last week from ever occurring again. Targeted airstrikes should be conducted and a no-fly zone enforced in order to protect civilians from further regime bombardment.
