An incident where Clarity of communication helped in achieving the desired goal During the execution of the O.P.Jindal 4 x 600 MW project, a project which is going to be a trendsetter for BHEL there was a very big crisis at site. The boiler was about to be lighted up, and that the Milestone had to be achieved within that span of time when it was found that the manufacturing of a mandatory product of Haridwar got delayed. The product is Strainer which will be attached in the main steam . The construction manager of the site, had a discussion with me on this issue. The discussion was very casual one, when were discussing the supply status of the Piping Centre supplies. But in the way he explained the crisis , something stroked my mind instantaneously. The issue was that, since the strainer manufacturing was getting delayed at Haridwar, the light up of the boiler could not be done as planned even though the other units have made their supplies on time. So it went to my mind that, the efforts taken by other units should not become a waste due the delay in supply of one product from one unit alone. So I immediately asked the Construction manager that if there is any alternative to solve this issue and meet the milestone. Then he said, we can add a connecting member in that line instead of the strainer. And he explained the function of the strainer. Then I asked him if some pipe can be provided by Piping Centre instead of that Strainer. He thought for a while and then he replied that it sounds meaningful. We further started clarifying certain things and ultimately landed up with a solution. The solution was that, if Piping Centre would supply a P91 pipe and a connecting elbow, it can substitute the strainer to achieve the milestone. Actually it was brilliant Idea. Then I asked him, in how many days will that be required at site. He said, he wants it within 8 days. I said to him positively that Yes We Can. Then I started with the action plan for achieving this target. I discussed with my engineering colleagues and explained them this issue. And the feasibility of this plan was also assessed taking into considerations the pressure, temperature and other factors. Within the next one hour everything was finalized. The next step was to check the material availability. Since P91 procurement period is very high, I had a fear in myself. But

with the support of my Operation colleagues, we were able to identify the required length of P91 pipe required. But the next challenge was to identify a suitable bend for this pipe. But unfortunately the matching bend size was not available. I was fed up, I was about lose my confidence and random thoughts went in my mind, if I had to drop this plan and if this milestone could not be achieved, but I told to myself that It is possible and the mission is still ON. Then I spoke to the construction manager at site, and explained him the issue. Then we arrived at a solution, to change the pipe size to lower/higher thickness and match the bend accordingly. That seemed to be a brilliant idea. We worked on the same grounds. Luckily we had a matching pipe and bend of the matching thickness. Finally we had the materials, but the edge preparation of the bend and pipe will be a time consuming one, hence again I had discussion with the construction manager and asked him if the EP can be done at site, so that I can prioritize to despatch the materials at the earliest. He accepted the suggestion and then told to proceed further. So immediately we took efforts and cleared the materials within eight hours. We despatched the materials within 24 hours from Trichy Unit to site. It reached the site in five days. And site was able to do the Edge preparation and erected the material within 3 days. Site was able to achieve the milestone as planned. The customer was highly delighted with the efforts taken by BHEL. This was a recent incident, where clarity in communication helped me in achieving the desired goal.
