Top 10 Most Horrible Looking Diseases

Skin is the largest organ in human body both weight and surface area wise. Weight of skin is between six and nine pounds and it spreads over about 2-square yards. Skin functions to protect human body from harmful bacteria, infections and regulates body temperature. Sometimes, skin is affected by germs, infections, genetic ailments, parasitic and everything in-between. These diseases not only affect and scar the skin of their victims for life but also affect and scar them mentally for life. 10. Blaschkos Lines:

Its true that all of us have Blaschkos Lines, but these are usually invisible in healthy human beings. These lines appear on the human skin as a result of different diseases, which can change the pigmentation on human skin. The lines become visible as a v-shape on the back, an s-shape on the front, and as wavy lines all over the head. It has been theorized that the lines form at those sites from where the embryonic cells are transported in utero. The most worrying thing is that there are more than nine different diseases that can make you striped like a freaking zebra. 9. Guinea Worm:

Guinea worm disease also known as Dracunculiasis, is one of those horrible diseases that people from the third world tell you about. It is a water borne disease meaning that the affected person swallows the baby worm with dirty water. At this point it happily chills out in the digestive tract of the affected person for a year or so. It then travels to a limb, most often a foot and forms a large and very painful blister. How they get it out? They fish out one end, and pull it out slowly and keep on rolling it over a twig over the course of days or weeks. If they try to pull it out quickly, it snaps, recoiling into the body to live again.

8. Cancrum Oris:

Cancrum Oris, commonly known as Noma, is gangrene of the face, and for some reason it affects the children more often than adults. It eats away the the tissues and musculature around the jaws, hence more than 80% of those affected by this disease die early. It is caused by an opportunistic infection that infects those people who are immunocompromised ( for example kids suffering from AIDS), are malnourished, have no access to clean drinking water, have poor dental hygiene, and live in close proximity to farm animals. 7. Neurofibromatosis:

Neurofibromatosis also known as von Recklinghausen disease is a genetic disease in which the nerve tissue grows excessively to form tumors (neurofibromas), which may be benign or may cause serious damage by compressing nerves and other tissues. This disorder affects all types neural crest cells (Schwan cells, melanocytes and endoneurial fibroblasts). Cellular elements from these cell types grow excessively throughout the body, forming tumors; melanocytes (skin pigment forming cells) also function abnormally in this disease, resulting in disordered skin pigmentation and cafe au lait spots. The tumors may cause bumps under the skin, colored spots, skeletal problems, pressure on spinal nerve roots, and other neurological problems. 6. Filarial Worm:

Filarial worm is another horrible parasite, what makes it even worse is the simple fact that it can live in human eye. Even worse, there are some leeches, which can latch onto human eyeball. The most disturbing

3 fact about Filarial worm is that it is the second most common cause of blindness in the world. That means it infests the tons of people. My eyes are itching just thinking about it. 5. Madura Foot:

Madura foot is also known as Eumycetoma and is a chronic fungal disease of the foot. It is not as simple as an athletes foot rather it will not be wrong to call it an entire ecosystem established on your extremities. Usually found in farm workers who get infected with the fungal spores while working on farm fields, from where the spores invade from the soil to open cuts on their feet, where they quietly take root, and dont cause any pain, just some milky discharge, for up to a year. Then all of a sudden enormous pus filled nodules appear all over the infected feetall the way down to the bone. There is no vaccine against this infection neither there is any real cure for the disease, leaving the treatment to antifungals or amputation if they dont work. 4. Elephantiasis:

Elephantiasis causes massive thickening of the skin and underlying tissue usually over the legs and genitalia. Affected persons scrotum can swell to the size of a basketball, which by no means is a sexy sight. This disease is caused by a worm along-with its symbiotic bacteria and a mosquito. Mosquitoes can inject the parasite into your body, which will permanently destroy lower half of your body. Thankfully, this is one of those horrible, horrible diseases, which actually are being defeated by us and it is predicted to be eradicated by 2020. 3. Necrotizing Fasciitis:

Necrotizing Fasciitis is caused by flesh-eating bacteria, which are far more common than we want them to be. It attacks the affected human beings when the person in question is already under siege from something

4 else: MRSA, immunocompromised, diabetes, alcoholism, etc. Even worse, when it happens, nothing can save the tissues. The only treatment is to limit it by just cutting out the affected bit ideally just a few small lumps of skin, but potentially a huge chunk of flesh including skin and muscle, a limb, or even genitelia. 2. Harlequin Ichthyosis:

This so very deadly genetic mutation leads to formation of super-thick skin in new born babies. This skin cracks where it should fold, leaving open wounds prone to infection. There eyes, orifices, and soft tissue are often painfully contracted, and moving can be agony for them. Currently, the chances of a child, suffering from this disease, to live have greatly improved, and theres even a 27 year old survivor of the disease currently still alive, whos the oldest survivor on record. 1. Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva:

In this disease human bodys repair mechanism is completely broken, and starts healing the fibrous tissue (such as muscles, tendons and ligaments) by turning them into bone. Thats right, affected persons whole body is slowly petrified, as the person in question quietly transforms into a creature made of bone. These newly formed bones are neither flexible nor have joints in between them, hence its like having a body filled with twigs that scrape and hinder every moment. Question is why not just cut off the growths? Answer is that it will cause the repair system to kick into overdrive, converting more of the body into bone and faster. Theres no known treatment for the 450 sufferers worldwide, and in one famous case a sufferer survived up to the age 40, at which point his entire body except his lips had transformed into bone, leaving him completely immobile. Its a nightmare, isnt it?
