Letter from the Director

In 2010, I announced that Golden West was the recipient of a $375,000 grant from the City of Boulder Affordable Housing Fund to replace the windows in the Central Tower.
With the grant money and matching funds from Golden West, and with the cooperation of our residents, families, and staff members (who went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure residents were cared for during construction), I am happy to report: mission accomplished. The new windows have greatly improved resident comfort. The old windows were a product of the 1960s and window technology has come a long way since then. The new windows keep out the cold, temper the noise from the high winds, and add an aesthetic improvement to the apartments. Based on resident feedback, the new windows have been a welcomed addition. Another benefit that comes with installing new windows is improved energy efficiency. While we havent seen the full impact yet, we know we can look forward to substantial cost savings in our natural gas bills. Updating our windows has allowed us to continue the preservation of our buildings. We need to tackle some major improvements now and in the future. Investing in our buildings will ensure that we can continue to serve fixed income seniors now and well into the future. In the coming years, we need to replace boilers, repair roofing, and replace windows in the south tower. The estimated cost for these projects is $1.4 million dollars. Our partnership with the City of Boulder and dedicated donors to the Golden West Foundation will help us to achieve these goals. Ultimately, an investment in Golden West is an investment in people the hundreds of elders that we house and provide services for every day. Not only do we need donors to support our capital needs, but we need donors to support our programs. These include the wellness center, rent subsidies, and personal needs items. For example, the Golden West Foundation allocates funds for Medicaid eligible seniors in assisted living. These seniors have limited housing options due to finances. Thanks to our generous donors past, present, and future, we currently provide 33 residents on Medicaid a rental subsidy they need to call Golden West their home. So, I want to thank all of you who contribute to Golden West. Your support is needed and appreciated to ensure that we remain a vital part of the Boulder community for another 48 years.

Invested in Golden West

Caregiver Annie Kosenski started working with Golden West 12 years ago in April of 2001. Like many individuals who serve our community, she was drawn to the opportunity of helping others. Annie said that I love the people here, not just the residents, but my co-workers as well. Working for an organization like Golden West creates countless opportunities to meet people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. This assortment of personalities can teach us all something new every day, something Annie appreciates and loves about her job. Talking to these people makes me appreciate their life experiences. They have lived through things other generations will most likely never have to experience, like the depression and WWII. When we are given the chance to sit down and learn from our residents, the lessons we take home can be even greater than we anticipated. The greatest lesson that Annie has learned from her time at Golden West is to always appreciate your life. Go with the days that you feel good and relish in the good times. When Annie goes home for the day, she takes care of her aging parents. My job comes home with me, and it has taught me how to care for my mom and dad. T he commitment that Annie shows to her residents has not gone unnoticed. Mezzanine Assistant Manager Emily Franta said She is simply wonderful. In her free time, Annie enjoys spending time with her dog Lily. You may even see Lily visit Annie at Golden West. Residents and co-workers alike notice and appreciate Annies dedication to her residents and to Golden West. Resident Bill Booze stated that Annie is great, she always does special things for us. She will bring in little treats and put them on our tables. We really love Annie, she does a great job. It is the staff members like Annie who work at Golden West that have made our organization what it is today. Always happy to go above and beyond, we all appreciate the work that you do for the residents. Thank you!

A Positive Outlook
Since the first residents of Golden West moved in over 48 years ago, countless seniors have peered out their windows out west onto our breathtaking view of the Flatiron Mountains and out east miles into the plains of eastern Colorado. The windows served us for many years protecting us from the cold and windy winters and hot, rainy summers. By 2008 the windows had aged well past their prime and when Golden West was awarded our grant from the City and County of Boulder, resident Toni Parrish was full of excitement and anticipation. "I was so excited, I thought ah! I will finally sleep without the wind blowing and waking me up in the night!" Soon after Golden West Senior Living was built, the City of Boulder began enforcing height restrictions on all new construction in the area. This 1970's building code has left us with our unobstructed views of Boulder. If you could manage to look beyond the clunky metal window frames that divided each window into panels, it was impossible to forgive the whistling from the wind and the cold air that leaked in each winter. Since the team from Calahan Construction successfully installed new windows in the central tower, residents can keep their apartments at a more comfortable climate. Toni has enjoyed every minute of it. "I feel so free now that I don't have to stare at those bars. I have my curtains open all the time! For those who have not visited Golden West recently, we invite you to stop by and take a look out of our new windows. On many quiet evenings Toni can be found watching the sun set behind the flatirons to the south. When the 4th of July comes around and the fireworks display is set off from Folsom Field, she can watch the show from the comfort of her bed. I hope the south tower can get their new windows sometime soon so that they can enjoy their new view too. This is the best thing thats been done to the building since I moved in seven years ago! With future grants south tower will receive new windows as well. For those residents, that time cant come soon enough. Toni expressed her gratitude to the staff of Golden West saying I just dont have any complaints. I appreciate what I have here and I really appreciate John. He really works to improve all of our lives!
