OPTIONAL RULE – For artillery and musket smoke.

At the start of the game players may agree that the accumulation of smoke created by artillery and musket firing will cause the firing unit to have reduced fire effect as a result of not being able to see the target clearly. If this is the case players should use the following rules. NOTE: This optional rule does not cater for actual wind direction. At the start of the game players should determine and agree the season in which the battle is being fought. The seasons shall be as follows: 1) 2) 3) 4) SPRING SUMMER AUTUMN WINTER March, April, May. June, July, August. September, October, November. December, January, February.

Once the season has been established players shall determine the wind strength by rolling 1 x D10 and comparing the dice score with the following table. Any unit that advances forward 100% of its movement allowance through its associated smoke may automatically remove all its smoke counters. 4) Removal of smoke Smoke counters are removed from the unit at the end of its own turn and after it has fired. 3) Any unit with 6 or more smoke counters is no longer permitted to fire as it can not see the target. NOTE: the unit does not need to be activated to remove smoke counters. EXAMPLE: Unit has 3 smoke counters.After every 4 complete turns (Side A and Side B have had 4 turns) players shall re-dice to determine wind strength. Repeat this process throughout the game. If the wind is calm (for four turns) and after re-dicing to determine the new wind strength the wind strength is still calm. once the unit has fired it will accumulate its own smoke counters and their associated effect. Smoke counters are placed in front of the unit up to a maximum of 6 smoke counters. Light Breeze = 2 counters removed.
