PART IX-A - SUMMARY OF DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES:
(1) $164,822.80 for the NANCY SUSAN REYNOLDS AWARDS - With prior approval from the IRS, in 1986 the Foundation established awards to be given annually to up to three North Carolina residents who have shown resourcefulness in tackling problems that may have resisted traditional approaches. The awards seek out and honor unrecognized individuals who have worked to make a positive difference in North Carolina. The awards are presented each year at a luncheon ceremony attended by over 350 people. The --recipients-receive-an award of $5,000 for personal use and they are able todesignate charitable recipients to receive an additional $20,000. (2) $124,906.80 for the SABBATICAL PROGRAM - In 1990, with prior approval from the IRS, the Foundation established a sabbatical program for individuals in paid full-time leadership positions who have served their North Carolina nonprofit organization for at least three years. The sabbaticals were established to provide an incentive to leaders of charitable organizations to continue their charitable work, and to improve and enhance their leadership capacity, skills, and talents. Each recipient is awarded $25,000, some of whom will not take their sabbaticals until 2008. (3) $278,693.18 for SPECIAL PROJECTS, OPPORTUNITIES, CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS: (A) $35,992. 23 for meetings and research on issues facing women in North Carolina, including economic exclusion, violence at home and in the workplace and the need for leadership development.

(B) $95,772.18 for the development and implementation of a project to assist the Foundation in its ability to understand how community development organizations are working.

(C) $36,175.58 to support a special project of the Foundation designed to improve the delivery of professional development to teachers and strengthen schools, particularly those in low-wealth areas of the state. The project was approved for adoption by the State's Education Cabinet.

(D) $10,000.00 The Foundation supported Action for Children by sponsoring a table for 10 at its Action for Children Legacy Award honoring Tom Lambeth, a former executive director and current Senior Fellow of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

(E) $75,000 In 2006 the Board approved funding for the K-12 Master Plan, which was developed by a number of NC funders to address issues raised by No Child Left Behind, LeAndro, and other education policies in a comprehensive way. Over the past year, NC Network of Grantmakers' Education Working Group has been meeting to discuss the needs facing NC's elementary and secondary schools, and what organized philanthropy can do to help. The work will continue into 2008 as a report to education policymakers and stakeholders is developed from this work.

(F) Fiscal Modernization Study Commission - $4,146.76 The General Assembly and Governor Easley have established a fiscal modernization study commission to undertake the task of recommending ways to modernize North Carolina's tax code, and examining and making recommendations with respect to state and local government revenue sharing and taxing authority. ZSR funds were used to pay for follow-up work relating to a commission retreat held in 2006 and for outside experts engaged in developing reports for the commission and advice to staff. (G) Global Warming Initiative - $21,606.43 for meetings/conferences on issues relating to global warming.
