every child. one voice.® AFTER-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM 2012/2013 The Shaker Road PTA is pleased to announce the start of its 2013-2014 after-school enrichment program. All classes are from 3 – 4 p.m. Space is limited. Deadline to enroll is two(2) weeks prior to the beginning of the course (Last minute add-on must be approved by the ASEP chair - no exceptions). PLEASE READ POLICY AND PROCEDURES CAREFULLY!!! THE MAGIC OF SCIENCE! (GRADES 1-4) The magic of science is all around us. In each session, we will explore scientific principles and perform experiments that seem impossible, yet are easy to understand as well as (safely) repeat at home. Amaze your friends with each week's new found knowledge. Whether you tell them the secret behind the science is up to you! Course Instructor: Brook Bourgeois has been employed by South Colonie Schools for the past 12 years as a technology education teacher at Lisha Kill Middle School. His classes center on an active, "hands-on" approach to problem solving, design, and critical thinking. He believes that students learn best by doing! Participation, team-work, and experimentation are encouraged! Learning should be fun, so let's go explore! Fee: $50.00 for the 4 –week course. Mondays: September 23, 30 & Oct 7, 21 from 3 – 4 p.m. in The Art Room. KARATE (Grades 1-4) *Note: there will be two opportunities to take part in this course This four-week course will involve students working at various stations learning karate and getting fit. The Sensei is a 2nd Degree Black Belt who is also certified in teaching and holds a Master's Degree in Education. The goals of this program are to give the students a karate based workout along with a sense of individual accomplishment. Session 1: Fee: $60 with uniform ($40 for those who already have a uniform from a previous session)for the 4 – week course. Tuesdays: October 22, 29 and Nov. 12, 19 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the Gym. Session 2: Fee: $60 with uniform ($40 for those who already have a uniform from a previous session)for the 4 – week course. Tuesdays: March 4, 11, 18, 25 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the Gym. LEGOS! (Grades K-4) *Note: there is a fall and spring offering of this course What better but an hour of Lego fun to end the school-day? This course will allow your child to use their imagination week after week and build what's on their mind! Course instructor: Ms. Evette is a PTA member and a grandmother to two shaker road students (2nd and 3rd grades). She is very involved in our community and has been volunteering at shaker road since her oldest grandchild was in kindergarten. She is creative and loves to help kids tap into their imagination. Fall: Fee: $50.00 for the 5 –week course. Wednesdays: October 16, 23, 30 and Nov. 6 and 13 from 3 – 4 p.m. in Room 14. Spring: Fee: $50.00 for the 5 –week course. Wednesdays: March 12, 19, 26, and April 2, 9 from 3 – 4 p.m. in Room 14.

Zumba (K-4)
These classes are fun, high-energy fitness-parties packed with specially choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all the music kids love, like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia and more. Parents love Zumbatomic because of the effects it has on kids, increasing their focus and self-confidence, boosting metabolism and enhancing coordination. Kids should come with sneakers and comfortable clothes. Instuctor: Tina Hennessey is an experienced, group fitness instructor through NETA (National Exercise Trainers Association) with a specialty as a Zumba fitness instructor. She provides classes to various fitness centers and programs in the Colonie and Latham area. She is CPR and AED certified with the American Red Cross. As a mother of four children she understands the importance for healthy active children. Fee: $40.00 (includes materials) for the 4 – week course. Thursdays: October 17, 24 & Nov. 7, 14 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the gym. SIMPLY CHARMING I AND II (Grades 2-4) Getting older, going new places and having more independence and responsibility is all a sign of growing up. Show your great personality and earn respect by learning the dos and don’ts of mastering the best manners possible. Have fun practicing the Fabulous American Girl Manners. Participants will learn the secrets to grace, confidence and being your best. Learning manners gives you the skills you need to handle all kinds of tough and tricky times that will come your way. New lessons will be presented weekly followed by fun hands-on activities including games and skits. Special presentations from the school of thoughts of Emily Post and Miss Manners will also be highlights. Participants will create a take home guide showcasing the lessons and activities of the course and will design a very special take home reminder token. Instructor: Judi Hicks year of experience teaching Global Fashion Studies, a college prep course offered to 11th and 12th graders at the BOCES Career and Technical School in Colonie as well as HVCC Summer Academy on fashion and etiquette. Produces the Colonie Center Mall Back to School Fashion Show, the largest fashion event in the Capital District. I) Fee: $45.00 (includes materials) for the 4 – week course. Mondays: Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 18 & Dec. 2 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the Music Room. II) Fee: $45.00 (includes materials) for the 4 – week course. Mondays: March 3, 10, 17, 24 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the Music Room. SEWING AND CRAFTING (Grades 2-4) Chris Mele, owner of Apple Interiors , will be working with second, third, and fourth graders on the basics of sewing and crafting. She will introduce hand stitching a hem and buttons, embroidery techniques, and each child will choose a special holiday project to complete. Fee: $40.00 (includes materials) for the 4 – week course. Thursdays: Nov. 21 & Dec. 5, 12, 19 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the Art Room. AMAZING ATHLETES (Grades K-2) Amazing Athletes is a developmental sports and fitness program that teaches children the basic fundamentals and mechanics of 9 different sports: Baseball, Basketball, Football, Golf, Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Tennis and Volleyball. Introducing children to sports and fitness at an early age and exposing them to an active and healthy lifestyle is our main goal. Our program incorporates exercises for gross motor development, hand-eye coordination, cardio-vascular fitness, speed and agility and stretching and muscle tone. The sports will be divided up over the course of the session so the children are able to learn and practice the basic fundamentals of each. Fee: $49.00 for the 4–week course. Wednesdays: November 20 & Dec. 4, 11, 18 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the Gym. (Maximum: 16 students)

WOOD WORKING TOY SHOP (1-4) Come explore woodworking! In this introductory course, each boy or girl will build and take home their creations each week. Using pre-cut kits (no saws, drills or sharp tools) students will sand, build and glue in a fun, constructive environment. When the construction is complete, students can decorate their projects to their liking. No prior experience is necessary- just be ready to have fun! (The projects are completely different from the ones in the Summer session. If you participated, we would love to see you again!) YOGA (Grades K-4) This course will integrate mindfulness, breathing techniques and yoga stretches/postures/movements to support students with physical strength, flexibility, attention and concentration skills. Students will learn to use yoga to calm the mind and the body, allowing them to feel focused. It will be a fun and active class, supporting the children to release energy in a positive way. Instructor: Jessica Lubin, graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood & Elementary Education. She is the owner and operator of the Good Karma Studio off of Wolf Rd. She trained in NYC, spent 5 months training in Guatemala, and then received her certification in Ashtanga & Vinyasa Yoga while studying in India for 4 months. Fee: $45.00 for the 4 - week course. Mondays: March 31, and April 7, 21, 28 from 3 - 4 p.m. in the Gym. BOOT CAMP GAMES (K-4) A fun fitness class using hula hoops, jump ropes, light weights and other child friendly equipment. Kids will progress through stations for short bursts of activity. Kids will be taken through fun warm up movements then will progress through balance, coordination and cardio drills. Instructor: Stacy Quinn is an experienced group fitness instructor certified through AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Assoc. of America) and CPR and First Aird certified through the American Red Cross. She teaches at many health clubs and college fitness centers including RPI. She is a busy wife and mother of two young boys and believes in making fitness fun! Fee: $45.00 for the 4 - week course. Tuesdays: April 1, 8, 22, 29 from 3 - 4 p.m. in the Gym. Money Mania (Grades 2-4) What’s your money style? Are you a spender or a saver? How can you earn more money? What’s a trick for saving for something and being a better shopper? Learn how to make it, save it and spend it. You are never too young to learn the value of saving and how to establish a budget. Setting short-term and long-term buying and saving goals will be practiced. New lessons will be presented daily followed by hands-on activities including games, skits and puzzles. Students will create a take home guide showcasing the lessons and activities of the week. Judi Hicks, Instructor (please see bio from simply charming) Fee: $45.00 (includes materials) for the 4 – week course. Thursdays: April 3, 10, 24, May 1 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the Art room.

DANCE (K-4): Ballet and Tap are combined in a four week course, offering students an opportunity to experience two of the best loved forms of dance. Each class will begin with stretching and an introduction to basic ballet movements and vocabulary. Creative movement will be used to help foster grace, poise, and confidence. The class will then progress to tap. Tap skills will be taught and explored in a fun and energetic manner. Ballet and Tap shoes are not required since it is only a four week course. If students do not have these shoes, socks for ballet and sneakers for tap will do just fine. Instructor: Deborah Anthony has a BFA in Musical Theater from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy/ The New School in New York City, and a Masters Degree from John Jay College. She is an American Ballet Theater affiliate teacher in The National Training Curriculum Primary through Level 3 and has been teaching in New York City for the past 6 years. Deborah has also choreographed numerous musicals. Some of her favorites include A Christmas Carol the Musical, Beauty and the Beast, Anything Goes, and 42nd
Street.

Fee: $45.00 for the 4 - week course. Mondays: May 5, 12, 19 & June 2 from 3 – 4 p.m. in the Gym BASKETBALL AND SOCCER PROGRAM! (Grades K-4) Amazing Athletes is offering a game-based sports program designed to keep children active and engaged through advanced physical fitness challenges and interactive sports lessons. This session will focus on basketball and soccer, including in each class a re-cap of basic fundamentals and introducing new skills through drills and a variety of fun games. Soccer (1st two weeks) Skills: Dribbling, Ball Control, Passing, Kicking Basketball (2nd two weeks) Skills: Dribbling, Ball Handling, Passing, Shooting All of our sports games are skill based rather than competition based. It is our goal with Amazing Athletes to promote teamwork and progression rather than competition. Fee: $49.00 for the 4–week course. Wednesdays: May 7, 14, 21, 28f rom 3 – 4 p.m. in the Gym.

REGISTRATION: Fill out the attached registration form completely for each child and bring to school by the dates indicated. Include check payable to Shaker Road PTA for the appropriate amount. Class space is limited. Please keep this registration handout for class dates, time and room information. IMPORTANT NOTE: Last year many of the registration forms and checks did not make it to the main office. Parents, it is your responsibility to make sure that registration forms and payments make their way to the main office.

FOR YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY! 1. Parents/Guardians MUST send a NOTE with their child to give to their teacher as a reminder each day in which the student is participating in ASEP program. 2. If you realize you have forgotten to send a note please call the school immediately (518-458-1440). THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Children could be sent home on the bus when parents are not expecting them and may not have proper arrangement in place. CONFIRMATION OF ENROLLMENT: Confirmation of enrollment will be conveyed via telephone or email. If you have not received confirmation then your child is NOT enrolled, WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED YOUR REGISTRATION OR PAYMENT. If you have questions about whether or not your child is enrolled please contact the ASEP chair as soon as possible.

Refunds/Cancellations: Courses with insufficient enrollment or insufficient parent volunteers* may be cancelled and a full refund will be given. In the event of a snow day or emergency early dismissal, any enrichment classes scheduled that day will be cancelled and no refund will be given. Classes may be rescheduled with principal approval only. *Parent Volunteers: Parent volunteers are vital to the success of the program. Volunteers are needed in each class to take attendance, oversee class dismissal, assist the teacher, and help clean up. Insufficient numbers of volunteers may result in a course cancellation. BEHAVIOR: 1. Students are expected to follow all usual school rules and the South Colonie Code of Conduct while attending enrichment classes. 2. Unruly or inappropriate behavior by your child may result in elimination from the program and no refund will be issued. 3. Students who refuse to participate will be asked to stop attending at the discretion of the volunteer and the approval of the ASEP Chair (as this takes focus away from the volunteers duties). Dismissal: Students must be picked up promptly at the end of the class. Parents must enter the school by the front door and come directly to the enrichment classroom. Under school rules, persons already in the building are not permitted to allow anyone access to the building through the locked side doors. Parents must list the name or names of the person(s) who are authorized to pick up their children on the program registration form. For your convenience, several alternates may be listed on the form. If a designated person is unable to come on any particular day and the parent is sending someone else not previously listed, the parent must send in a written note to the enrichment teacher either with the child or the adult who is to pick up the child on that day. Persons picking up children may be asked to show a photo ID. Anyone picking up a child will also be required to sign a sign-out sheet. Chronic late pick-up may result in elimination from the program and no refund will be issued. Students enrolled in the Colonie Youth Center after-school program will be escorted to that program at the end of an enrichment class.
