State Representative Mike Dovilla Announces Field Hearing on Ohio Veterans Services House Panel Will Focus on State and Local Efforts to Improve Veterans Services
State Representative Mike Dovilla (R – Berea) today announced the House Committee on Policy and Legislative Oversight will hold a hearing on veterans’ services. The hearing will take place on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio at2:30 p.m. BACKGROUND: Ohio has the fifth largest veteran population in the Nation, estimated at over 899,000 residents who have served in conflicts ranging from World War II to the Global War on Terrorism. With such a diverse veteran population, myriad needs must be met in order to ensure these residents have access to services ranging from medical care to job placement. House Bill 490 from the 129th General Assembly mandated a number of reforms to make Ohio’s veterans services more efficient while assisting the families of service members including: enabling county veteran service officers to be certified and trained to access discharge forms; allowing the electronic publication of county veteran service center information and increasing representation on the Veterans Advisory Council; and allowing the spouse or dependents of a veteran, who is deceased, regardless of the location of the death, to be eligible for in-state tuition if they are living in Ohio on the first day of their enrollment. In announcing the hearing Chairman Dovilla said, “I am pleased that our final summer field hearing will address veterans services, an issue of great importance to many Ohioans. As a U.S. Navy veteran and Baldwin Wallace University graduate, I am particularly gratified that my alma mater, which has been recognized as a Yellow Ribbon institution for its robust program to attract returning veterans, has offered to host our committee for this hearing right here in the 7th Ohio House District.” FOCUS OF THE HEARING: The hearing will focus on the changes being implemented by the Department of Veterans Services and as a result of House Bill 490 from the 129th General Assembly and the support services offered to Veterans by myriad organizations throughout the state.

DETAILS FOR SUBMISSION OF WRITTEN COMMENTS: Any individual or group desiring to testify must submit written comments for the hearing record to rep07@ohiohouse.gov. All submissions must be in either Microsoft Word or PDF and received no later than Tuesday, September 24, 2013. -30-
