Equipment Criticality and the Prioritization of Work Orders

Company Confidential

By giving your equipment a rating and setting up guidance

rules, you can ensure that your maintenance and engineering efforts are focused in the correct areas

This will allow you to quickly and easily make decisions

regarding which preventive maintenance work may be moved in the schedule and which must be done on the date specified.

In addition, you will be able to prioritize any new defects that

occur in order to keep your most critical equipment available and to maintain maximum plant uptime.

Equipment in SAP can exist in many different forms:

These items of equipment can be used to create your asset register

What is equipment criticality? How to rank your equipment Risk matrix Equipment reliability reporting Prioritization guidelines Work Order Life Cycle Posting history

A criticality rating for a piece of equipment can be used to

determine how often the equipment should be inspected or maintained, as well as giving a scheduler a guide to which notifications and work orders can be rescheduled to a future date and which require more immediate attention

Consideration should be made for each assessed item of

equipment as to its vulnerability (the likelihood of failure) versus the criticality of the equipment (the consequence of the failure)

List your equipment Form an assessment team

Score your equipment

Consider the business risk if an item fails Convert score to risk rating

Use criticality when reviewing work lists or new

notifications Create a variant sorted by criticality to allow concentration of greatest risk equipment Use criticality for a long term view to concentrate teams efforts

Ensuring correct priority means your plant output will

be interrupted less often Draw up some guidance rules to follow Use the rules to decide which PM routines may be missed, and how many times they can be missed Use the ABC indicator to prioritize new defects

Validate Equipment & Identify Labor/Parts/Procedures

Compare to plan Test and adjust frequency between interventions

Validate Resource Availability

Confirm work hours Update Work History

Distribute Work Package/Perform Work

Created by whoever carried out the work Add as many details as possible State why the work was carried out

Timely recording of history High quality information

Assemble a team including several departments Decide what equipment you want to include Rank your equipment Determine the criticality for the equipment Establish guidance rules to decide how to prioritize preventive work and defects efforts to maximize availability and reliability

Use reporting to show where to concentrate team
