*FACT SHEET* HISTORY OF SCHOLARSHIP FUND The New Mt. Hermon Scholarship Fund was established in 1996, with a deep sense of educational advocacy to the youth of our community. The fund provides scholarships to students to assist in their matriculation through college. The annual concert shows the city youth that there are individuals like themselves that attend college. The youth will also have the opportunity to converse with the students of Howard University to gain insight of the college experience, first-hand. FORMER CONCERT PARTICIPANTS In the past, this presentation has featured: COCO and Dr. Deborah Smith-Pollard both from FM98WJLB; gospel artists Darius Twyman, 21:03, Chris Clark; and comedian Horace H.B. Sanders. INSIGHT/RECOMMENDATIONS We are excited about the opportunity to partner in support of New Mt. Hermons college scholarship fund. I strongly encourage young people to attend this concert. Last year, I was really touched by the choirs ministry because it consists of people our age that relates to us, expressed Aneyshia Minter, scholarship recipient and early childhood development major at Wayne State University. We will present five scholarships during this years concert, says Miranda White-Redley, scholarship committee representative. THE CONCERT The 3rd Annual Scholarship Benefit Concert is scheduled to take place on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 7 p.m. It will be held at Leland Baptist Church located at 22420 Fenkell Street, Detroit, MI 48223. The concert will feature the Howard Gospel Choir of Howard University from the nations capital, Washington, DC. Detroits own LaToya M. Turrentine, the granddaughter of the Queen of Quartet Evelyn Turrentine-Agee, and Derrick Milan & the Krew will be the guest artists. The event will be hosted by COCO from FM 98 WJLB. The tickets are $15 in advance and $17 at the door. They can be purchased at Gods World or New Mt. Hermon Missionary Baptist Church. All proceeds will benefit college fund.

History of the Howard Gospel Choir of Howard University


Formed on the campus of Howard University in 1968, the Howard Gospel Choir (HGC) is a body of students, alumni and community members dedicated to using the gift of music to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. As one of the first college gospel choirs, HGC is a trailblazer for all Gospel music ministries across collegiate campuses in the nation. HGC is a Howard University religious life organization under the auspices of the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel (Rev. Dr. Bernard Richards, Dean of the Chapel). With a legacy of four decades committed to excellence in music ministry, this musical aggregation has bred and shared with many of the most prolific people of this century. Some of their most noted alumni include include Grammy Award winners Richard Smallwood and Cor Cotton (member of Sounds of Blackness), as well as Elbernita Twinkie Clark of the legendary Clark Sisters, R&B star ngela Winbush and Sunday Best finalist, Clifton Ross III. The choir also travels extensively throughout the United States and most recently headlined tours to Italy and Slovakia [Europe]. The choir is currently under the direction of Reginald A. Golden, a fine arts degree candidate from Cleveland, OH. With such a rich legacy of excellence, the Howard Gospel Choir, a beacon light in the Howard University community, will continue to fulfill its calling to the world using Christ centered music as a means of healing, restoration and empowerment.
