Minelab Introduces 2 Great Smart Phone Apps For Hunters!

Coins Artifacts Rings Treasures from all over the world

Worldwide Discoveries in Every Issue

Welcome to Relic Hunter Magazine!
Dont you just love this hobby. What other activity can give you such great exercise, where you can find some change for your pocket, a gold ring, or even discover a piece from your history. Another great aspect of relic hunting is that many of us will spend just as much time doing research as we do hunting in the field. Libraries, books, computers, maps and old timers stories can give you just as much fun in learning about where to hunt as you get when youre swinging that loop. Those of you who are new to this recreational hobby should look up a local club and join it. Youll make lots of new friends and youll learn so many ideas on how to hunt and where to hunt. Many clubs support charitable activities and most clubs have member outings where you can win some great prizes in competition hunts or just enjoy hunting with a few friends. During the 60s and 70s when some of old timers were hunting, it wasnt uncommon to come back with pouches bulging with minnie balls, coins and other artefacts. Relics were abound. Theyre still more there, you just have to look a bit harder and think smarter to find them. Just be thankful that you dont have to worry with shifting settings and constantly retuning your machine while on the go. Todays metal detectors are truly amazing Simply turn on and go. Happy hunting and good luck!

Most of us take along a camera in our kit of tools, but lets take that a step further by using your smartphones camera as a GPS recorder for your find. Minelab has an app for you! Finding a great ring is always a thrill. See this one and more inside. Beau Ouimette Todays finds... This afternoon I got out after it warmed up a bit. The fields are frozen solid, but the woods are still easy to dig. I found a pre-Civil War homesite and scored some buttons and a Draped Bust half cent (18001808). Its very worn, but I can make out the type of Lady Liberty. On the way to the dig site I found the Navy button. It was made between 1860 and 1870, so I cant say for sure if it was lost during the Civil War, but it was in a likely area. On the way back I found the silver pocket knife. It has a dog on it that appears to be a bulldog. All in all a good days dig. Thanks for looking!

Found this today. Found using the E-trac. Its the first time Ive used it since I bought my Deus. But I think of myself as a veteran with it and know the sounds. I opened her up in all metal and went over the hot spot that the Deus found a hammered a week ago on. Its a noisy patch and the etrac gave a constant high pitch tone telling me of all the iron - but going mega slow I picked out the low grunts - and the odd high which are more tricky in the iron......... Its a small patch that, I swear, I went over with the Deus, but of course I could of missed it. But there is that niggling doubt that the E-Trac picked it up and the deus didnt. Impossible to say - but I will try taking both and running over the signals together tomorrow. Anyway - that said, Im loving the Deus and think it will work in harmony with my E-trac. So glad I kept it. Its a real war horse and when learnt - its takes so beating. Both will miss bits the other will pick up etc it seems.....find the hot spot quickly with the Deus and use both machines to winkle is my plan........ Cheers all

Recently, I discovered an app for my iPhone called Minelab Treasure Tracking and decided to give it a go. Its available for free at the Apple iTunes Store and it looks to be very promising. Much work went into coordinating all its functions that this application has to offer. I know this, after designing and redesigning the magazine app for Relic Hunter. The Apple xCode toolkit isnt very forgiving. The Minelab Treasure Tracking has some great features for general use: Its compatible with both iPhone and Android smart phones. It allows you to photograph your find. Also, if you have your GPS location setting turned on for photographs, the app will automatically attach this information to your photograph.
22 Relic Hunter January - February, 2012

The app will also plot the GPS coordinates on a map, pinpointing your location. This is all processed without manually entering in anything. Its all done in the background, which is a real time-saver. Youre able to type out a description of your treasure, giving it a name and a brief description if you care to. The app saves your photograph to a separate file, called the Gallery. This is a collection of all your finds. One interesting aspect of this app is that each time you save an image to the Gallery and youre doing the GPS record, another pin drops down on the map. Your information is 100% safe. Nothing is transmitted to anyone. If you want to share your discovery, youve got an option to email your find. This will show photo

like the one here on the page. Your information is sent as a PDF file. Now for all you Minelab owners, youll appreciate this special item that is also available. This app can also provide you operators manuals for current Minelab detectors. E-Trac users get a special benefit from this app. You can display all factory set patterns and treasure hunting modes for this detector.

Find treasure anywhere with your pocket metal detector!

Minelab: Epic Find uses your iPhone camera to simulate real-life metal detection, with special audio cues to help you learn and distinguish among the varying tones and values of different treasures like Golden Nuggles, or mysterious relics like the Sheriffs Remains.

Unlock five popular metal detectors from Minelab, the industrys world leader in metal detection technology, and hunt across four worldwide locations. Exciting Features: * Detect Mode: Use your iPhone camera to scan the ground until you hear or see a change in tone. * Pinpoint Mode: With your potential targets detected, pinpoint them by running your finger over tiles and listening for tones. A target ID (TID) on your detector interface will help you differentiate metals and strategize which digs to pursue. * Dig Mode: Tap on individual tiles to reveal finds. Be frugal and accurate with your taps; you will have limited battery life on your detector, as well as fluctuating patience levels. * Locations: Hunt for pirate treasure among the tropical islands of Florida, western relics in the desert mountains of Arizona, war relics in historical battle fields of Virginia, and gold along the western coast of Australia. * Minelab Rewards: Unlock and redeem a special in-game offer once you advance to the last level!

Multiple Silvers, Buffalos and A BIG First For A Young Man!

by Bell-Two Wow what a day, Doug, Malachi and I joined Steve and Mark for a mini group hunt, it turned out to be a very good day. Cool and crisp to begin with but warmed up later. Malachi Dougs eight year old son was looking for his first silver, using a modified Explorer with a tight discrimination pattern that would most likely only hit on a good coin target he was raring to go. Well about three hours into the hunt he nailed his first silver, a nice 1948 Rosie, ironically he got his first just about in the same area I got my first silver ever, a little over two years ago! Lets see he is eight and I was sixty six at the timeI think he will end up will more lifetime silver than I will! I did alright getting a Rosey and a Merc plus 7 wheaties. We all had large amounts of clad I had 19 nickels, Doug had 30 and Malachi had some too so we had over 50 nickels! Doug had a monster day with 8 silvers, 3 Mercs, 2 Roseys, 1899-O Barber dime, for his trifecta, a war nickel 1943-P and a dateless Standing Liberty Quarter, 5 Buffalo nickels and a Sterling pin with the seal of Ohio on it and a cool ring, while not silver it is still very nice. I had over $6.00 in clad and during the last hour or so I stopped digging dime signals unless they were deep, and penny signals unless I was sure they were a wheatie. The old hip caused me to drag along. A great day was had by all.

Rva Diggn, Richmond, Virginia, USA Heres what I found on Christmas day. Trying to put an age on it but Im not too sure about these things. I really dont have a clue of why it was here. There was a famous person that was a firefighter for the Orlo Vista FD and he traveled alot with the circus as the worlds tallest man, but Im not sure if this belonged to him. My research told me this fire department wasnt formed until the 1950s, when this guy, Hi Johnson was a fireman. He was made chief at some time though. For some reason I was thinking this badge was way older than the 1950s, but maybe not.

I got out for a while Friday and only got a 27 Merc that I scratched. I knew Id be back at it with the weather holding, so I waited in hopes of getting something else to post. After striking out yesterday, I found a new spot that looked promising. It looks as if Ark and I were right. I got a 1907S Barber dime at 8, along with several older wheats. Looks like maybe two more days before I have to put things away for a couple months. Lets hope for a mild winter!

Yeasty

A couple weeks ago I pulled out my very first Seated Liberty coin at a construction site where a new High School is being built. A sweet 1876 dime. My research showed that the site was once owned and farmed by a Presbyterian minister back in 1868. So, because the temperature had finally dropped and the ground was soft from Irene, I returned today and Ill be d@mned if I didnt find another! A one year older 1877 Seated Dime! To date Ive found only one Barber dime and now Ive found 2 Seated dimes. Go figure. This site has already produced 2 Rosies, 2 Mercs, an XF Barber quarter, the previously found Seated dime, and now the second Seated dime. Anyhow, Im as happy as a little girl and plan to return there again soon and will be all over this site LIKE THE DEVIL AT A CHURCH REVIVAL!

Sean Magee, Spain Hi all, went out for a 3 hour session this afternoon. The water still a bit lumpy but not too bad. I tried two new beaches that I have never been in before and dug quite a few coins. Still no gold but had 6 rings, 5 silver and 1 stainless, 1 silver pendant, 1 silver earring, stainless steel pendant, silver neck chain 26 grams, 600 Pesatas and 22 in spendable. I am going to try these beaches again in a few days when ill have low tide in the morning and less swell. Although there isnt much tide in the Med the difference will be about 18 inches lower than today and I can get another 20 metres out over the length of the beach which should produce a lot more signals. Well see! Bye for now Sean

I would like to give everyone a heads up. The pavilion in Holcombe was asked for last year after we got done with it so it was taken for the time we wanted this year. I have checked around and found that the pavilion was available in Cadott at the River View Park. I went ahead and signed for the park for June 2nd 2012. Because of being late on getting this going we will be working on getting fliers and signup sheets done to get them out quickly. Myself, Secretary and the Vice President will be very busy sending out invitation letters, seeking contributors. Plan on a great hunt! We will keep everyone informed as to what is going on. 1793 Penny Fetches $1.38M At Fla. Auction

By The Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A once-cent copper coin from the earliest days of the U.S. Mint in 1793 has sold for a record $1.38 million at a Florida auction. James Halperin of Texas-based Heritage Auctions told The Associated Press on Saturday that the sale was the most a United States copper coin has ever sold for at auction. The coin was made at the Mint in Philadelphia in 1793, the first year that the U.S. made its own coins. Heritage officials said in a news release that the name of the buyer was not revealed but that he was a major collector. One of the coins earliest owners was a well-known Baltimore banker, Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Mr. Eliasberg was nicknamed, `the king of coins because before his death in 1976 he assembled a collection that consisted of at least one example of every coin ever made at the United States Mint, a feat never duplicated, Halperin said in the news release.

The final bid for the coin last week was one of the largest sales at the Florida United Numismatists coin show and annual convention, which runs through Sunday. Halperin said a five-dollar gold piece from 1829 also was sold. Halperin said there remain a few hundred 1793 coins in different condition, but that the one auctioned off Wednesday night is rare because it wasnt in circulation. Officials say it shows no wear on its lettering, its Lady Liberty face or the chain of linking rings on its back. The news release said the coin is known as a Chain Cent because its chain of linking rings was supposed to represent the solidarity of the states. The design was changed to a wreath after some critics claimed it was symbolic of slavery. Halperin said the auction had more than $64 million in transactions. The show runs through Sunday.

Panning for gold, a rich prospect in search for engagement ring.

FINDING the perfect engagement ring is a daunting prospect for most men. John Greenwood set himself an added challenge. Rather than take a trip to the jewellers, the 46-year-old decided to pan his own gold in the Scottish Highlands as a unique symbol of his love. To the astonishment of experts, Mr Greenwood produced 34 grams of gold that he claims to have collected in just three months. He had it made into a ring set with three diamonds (above) and presented it to his girlfriend of three years, Morag Shearer, in a Christmas proposal. Mr Greenwood, an explosives technician currently between jobs, took up panning only 18 months ago and said his Midas touch was down to beginners luck as he worked the rivers in the Ochils near his home in Crieff, Perthshire. I started in September and by December I had 34 grams, which is a huge amount, he said. Ive been incredibly lucky to find so much gold to make a ring but I was out there every weekend and in the evenings before it got dark, in freezing cold water. Some days Id be camping next to the river and Id start as soon as the sun was up. I must have beginners luck. Mr Greenwood used a simple gold pan, trowel, shovel and rake to collect tiny specks of gold from rivers around the Highland Boundary Fault.

Grant Logan, a goldsmith from Campbeltown, Argyll, used Mr Greenwoods collection to fashion the ring. When John realised he was finding gold he contacted me to ask how much he would need to make a ring, said Mr Logan. I told him hed need more and that gave him the incentive to keep going. Miss Shearer, 40, a physiotherapist, was aware that her partner was panning for gold but thought it was simply a new hobby. The ring used just under four grams. Mr Greenwood said: Ive actually got so much left over I am holding it back to make our wedding rings. Jeremy Harding of Wartski, the Mayfair jeweller responsible for making the Duchess of Cambridges Welsh gold wedding band, said, I would say its highly unlikely - almost impossible - to find this quantity of gold in such a short time unless you are a skilled panner. A spokesman for the British Gold Panning Association said, Panners can go 30 years and get just a fraction of this amount. He has been extremely lucky if hes found that much in that short a time. I should think the world and his aunty will be trying to find the spot where he did it. If I was him Id keep quiet.

Thieves steal 400,000 of Minelab detectors from a parked truck.

by R2tag Detectives are hunting a gang of thieves who stole a haul of metal detectors valued at hundreds of thousands of pounds from a lorry parked in Bradford. Post Hotel. It is understood the Turkish driver slept in his cab and discovered the theft the following morning. Minelab general manager Sheila Kelleher said the Turkish agents were offering a reward for information about the theft. She said the metal detectors were a very specialist product, used at the higher end of the market to identify gold nuggets. Mrs Kelleher said the theft was of tremendous concern. We are desperate that any information about who has carried out this hijacking, or where the product is now, should be given to the appropriate authorities in confidence. Detective Constable Imran Haider of Bradford South CID, who is leading the investigation, said: Whoever has taken these items must have done so using a large vehicle and it is highly likely there will have been more than one person involved. Detective Con Haider asked anyone with information, or anyone who may have witnessed the theft which took place between 8 PM on Thursday and 8 AM the following day, to contact police, on the nonemergency number 101, or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.

About 300 boxes of detectors, with a total value of 400,000, ($622,512 USD) were taken when the thieves broke into the lorrys trailer while it was parked up overnight in Common Road, Low Moor. The high-value theft took place as the lorry stopped off en route from Ireland to Istanbul in Turkey. Boxes of Minelab GPX 4500 metal detectors were taken from the red and white Renault heavy goods vehicle. The stolen metal detectors are owned by Minelab, of County Cork, and were being transported from Ireland to Turkey by Turkish agents. The HGV had stopped at a Bradford warehouse but had been parked up overnight on the roadside, close to the Guide

Precious gold ring, lost for EIGHTY YEARS is returned to owners grandson, 75, after being discovered in an underwater cave.
By Hugo Gye

A man has been united with his grandmothers class ring, decades after she lost it in a Florida spring. The scuba diver who discovered the ring said that everything happens for a reason following his successful mission to track down the descendant of the woman who dropped her college memento in the water. The gold ring travelled 800 miles from its finding place to its new home after being found by keen diver Reed Banjanin during one of his regular expeditions. Discovery: This gold class ring from 1923 was lost by Louise Hearst, right, a graduate of Mississippi Womans College now called William Carey University Finding place: This is the area in Florida from which Reed Banjanin dived down to a cave and found the ring Mr Banjanin told MSNBC that in July he was diving 25ft below the surface in a spring in Longwood, Florida, and ran a metal detector along the mouth of a cave.

He tracked down her 75-year-old grandson, also called John Entzminger, and offered to return the ring. Mr Entzminger, who lives in Oakton, Virginia, said: I just couldnt believe it. I had absolutely no idea that my grandmother lost it. He now plans to hand the historic memento on to his own grandchildren.
