Northern shrimp are found in the cold waters of the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and Arctic Oceans. On the U.S. Atlantic coast, northern shrimp are mainly found in waters off of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Northern shrimp live on soft mud bottoms in waters approximately 30 to 1,000 feet deep. Northern shrimp are often referred to as salad shrimp because they are small, reaching only 2 to 4 inches in length. They have a sweet taste, more flavorful than warm-water shrimp. When live, their tails are more red than pink and their bodies and shell are translucent.
Cooked, the shell is pink and the meat is white tinged with pink. Cooked northern shrimp is fairly firm and moist.

Nothern shrimp are low in saturated fat and high in iron, phosphorus, and zinc. Despite its high cholesterol content, shrimp is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and is a great lean protein source. Try this fabulous and healthy version of Shrimp Scampi!
