Firstly: The Sharia (Islamic Legal System) in respect to reality is like the core [of a fruit] in relation to its seed

and not like the peel in relation to the core and seed, as was mentioned earlier, because as the core‟s shell is the only protection for the seed, likewise the essence and reality of Islam is always protected under the shade of the Sharia and its devotional guidelines. Hence, religiousness has no meaning if it is not in accordance with the Sharia. Secondly: The Holy Prophet‟s existence represented the essence and soul of Islam, until the very last moments of his life; he acted upon the Sharia and its tenets immaculately. He was not neglectful in the deliverance of his message. So in this way, the station of his servitude which was gained as a result to acting upon the Sharia and its tenets was higher and greater than all of his other stations including that of his message. Thirdly: Worship and servitude are part of the natural disposition of man and all humans, be they the most perfect or the most wretched, have been moulded together with the servitude and bondage of Allah. Thus, in reality, disobedience to worship and servitude is a movement away from and in the opposite direction of man‟s natural disposition. The method, by which these natural dispositional needs are fulfilled, can only come from a wise and all-knowing creator, who sent it down in the form of the Sharia which perfectly conforms to the natural disposition of man and therefore, no one has the right to authorize or invent a method of servitude by himself. It is for this reason that the method and manner for successful worships can only come from and be determined by Allah. The Prophets Worship; Personification of Allah’s Manifestations Based on religious teachings, worshippers can be classified into three categories: 1) those who worship for fear of Hell, 2) those who worship in the hope of receiving the divine blessings of Paradise and 3) those who worship solely out of love and adoration of the Almighty. In a narration, it is reported that Imam Sadiq (as) said: „Some people worship Allah out of fear; this is the worship of the slaves. Some others worship in the hope of receiving rewards; this is the worship of the traders. However, others worship Allah solely out of love and adoration; this is the worship of the free and is the best form of worship.‟ On the basis of this narration, the highest form of worship is the worship of the free, who worship only because they love and admire Allah. Moreover, it should be seen whether the worship of the Holy Prophet was in line with the worship of the free or something higher. Ayatollah Khomeini considered the worship of the free, to be the final stage in the worship of an ordinary individual and the initial stage in the worship of the perfect man. In connection to this, he writes: ‟In reality, the worship of the free is nothing else but the display and exhibition of love and admiration from the lover. However, complete attention towards Allah and a full disconnection from anything other than Him, does not materialise by this type of worship. The worshipper at this stage does have attention to his worship and tries his outmost to perform it with love and admiration but pureness and disconnection will only be realised

It was then revealed to me to say. I looked and noticed such a reality that its sight caused me to fall down. the Holy Prophet (saw) made wudhu (ablution) with water that was flowing from the right side of Allah‟s Throne and stood for prayer. I again recited the verse that was taught to me and got up and then after sitting for a while. Hence.‟ Glory be to my Lord. „the worship of the perfect man is the stage of the boundless irradiations of the Truth and his bodily movements during the prayer are a function in the manifestation of the Beloved‟s Beauty. At that time it was revealed to me to say. be it the ultimate goal for the rest of humanity.”‟ Even though many secrets are hidden within this wonderful narration.‟ In these words of Ayatollah Khomeini. the worship of the sincere awliya is the stage of the boundless irradiations of the Beloved. After reciting the chapters of Fatiha and Tawheed. I saw that magnificence again and fell down in prostration. is only classified as the midway point for the perfect man. The majesty of the Lord and gratitude for His unlimited bounties had made comfort and ease foreign to his holy being. are never negligent of any of the stages of servitude. the pen does not have the ability to explain and analyse them. The Holy Prophet (saw) said: “When I looked. It is for this reason that Ayatollah Khomeini called the worship of the pure friends of Allah (awliya) as the stage of the irradiations of the Beloved: „Know that…the worship of slaves and hirelings was foreign to the sacred station of that master. it was said to him to drop his hands and place them upon his knees and look towards the Throne. which seems to possess countless secrets. with little deliberation. suffused with love. In continuation. I saw such magnificence. The holy awliya (as) while being absorbed in the beauty and glory of the Beloved and effaced in His attributes and Essence. While I was standing I was told to recite chapter Fatiha and then to recite the chapter Qadr as this chapter is in respect to you and your Ahl al-Bayt till the day of resurrection. Imam Sadiq (as) said: „On the Night of Ascension. I saw a large group of angels and prophets standing in front of me and was ordered to greet them. and praise belongs to Him. I was then told to send salutations upon myself and my Ahl al-Bayt. Their bodily movements are subject to their spiritual stirrings. the worshipped and the worship become one and a complete dissolving into the worship is manifested.once the worshipper. which are subject to the quality of the manifestation of the Beloved's beauty.‟ After reciting this I regained consciousness and was told to look upwards.‟ becomes clear. I performed ruku (bowing) and sajda (prostration). the Great. I got to my feet.‟ After reciting this I regained consciousness and sat up. Then. the meaning of Ayatollah Khomeini‟s words. it is necessary to quote here a portion of the Ascension Narration.‟ which has been reported from Imam Sadiq (as) is an indicator to the first stages in the worship of the perfect man and not the peak of his worship. just like the first rakat. In order to gain a better understanding and unravel the secrets within the words of Ayatollah Khomeini. However. and praise belongs to Him.‟ The saying. At that time. as indicated previously. „…I worship Allah out of the love I have for him…. he named the worship of the perfect man as the stage of the irradiations of Allah and the bodily movements during the stages of the prayer as a function to manifest the Beloved‟s Beauty.‟ Glory be to my Lord. Rather. as pointed out in the prayer of the heavenly ascent. The method of worship that is included in the sharia of the Holy Prophet (saw) is the most complete and most befitting . many deep secrets are hidden. the Most High. worship performed out of love. its awe caused me to pass out and go unconscious. for example by referring to the Ascension Narration (Hadith Me‟rāj).

it becomes clear that the best and most beautiful method of servitude is this method that in the words of Ayatollah Khomeini. take wudhu. The result of this knowledge is the presence of mind and heart during worship and a joyfulness at the blessings bestowed upon him by Allah. favours and effects. extracted from the Narration of Ascension. The mystics about the concept and levels of thankfulness have said that the meaning of thankfulness and praise is nothing but a complete knowledge of the Granter. for if they were. is called the stage of the boundless irradiations of the Beloved. Thus it is impossible to even imagine a better form of worship other than the one revealed to the Last Prophet (saw).’ It can be said that the message in the above narration. but as the Sharia of Islam is the most complete set of legislation. Allah is the only true helper and assistant. his tongue should continuously be singing and glorifying His praises and efforts must be made to always be in the state of obedience and worship. he would show and present his thanks and praises towards Allah via supererogatory prayers. Allah then revealed the following verse: ’ Ta Ha! We did not send down to you the Quran that you should be miserable. He must always have good intentions towards the servants of Allah. is that making efforts in acquiring greater perfection and the attainment of higher goals through worship and supplication is one of the practical lessons we can gain from the Holy Prophet‟s (saw) life. Then supplicate towards Allah and recite the verse. „And take recourse in patience and prayer…’ The Prophet’s (saw) Worship of Thankfulness One of the secrets hidden within the worship of the Holy Prophet (saw) was that. The Holy Quran says:‟ And take recourse in patience and prayer…‟ the word recourse (isteaanet) means to seek help because in reality. a complete connection to the station of Allah is the only way to get assistance and find the way towards salvation and success. based on the verse. enter the masjid and perform two units of prayer. . Imam Sadiq (as) has said: „Whenever problems face you. bowing and prostration of a believer in prayer. In reality the standing. praise and exalt the Grantor of these blessings and ponder on His signs. How beautiful it is.expression of servitude and bondage in the presence of Allah. Allah would have announced it to His Prophet and ordered His servants to follow that method. which is represented through his worship and is manifested in the prayers of the believers. The Prophet’s (saw) Ascetic Worship Imam Ali (as) is reported to have said:‟ The Holy Prophet (saw) for a period of 10 years used to pray on the tips of his toes till his feet became swollen and his blessed face became pale. through which they could have travelled the path towards spiritual perfection quicker and more complete. The thanks giver in seeking this knowledge and concentration must intend to honour. is the exact representation of the method manifested upon the heart of the perfect man. „In the Apostle of Allah there is for you a good exemplar…’ that a believer can acquire the secret of success only by imitating the actions of the Holy Prophet (saw).

This matter. what is the reality in the meaning of Night of Ordainment? And why Allah in describing it says: „the Night of Ordainment is better than a thousand months?‟ By using the mystical approach we can expound on the above questions as follows: {a thousand months} is symbolic of all creation.” Therefore. one of the secrets of the Holy Prophet‟s (saw) worship was that it was in recognition of the indescribable favours of Allah and through his worship presented his gratitude in the court of Allah. However. the Night of Ordainment is introduced with having many varying connections to the perfect man.e. that the reality of the Night of Ordainment is the Holy Prophet (saw) himself. some have said because the decrees of the year are ordained and established on this night. for example. e. Ayatollah Khomeini has pointed out a very subtle point about the naming of the Night of Ordainment.” Ta Ha! We did not send down to you the Quran that you should be miserable. Another possibility in this regard is that among all the nights. that has acquired a special place in the words of Ayatollah Khomeini.g. one of the discussions is that the perfect man (the Holy Prophet (saw)) is the reality of the Night of Ordainment. the night on which the real lover reached his Beloved. i. The Prophet (saw) and the reality of the Night of Ordainment (Laylatul Qadr) The chapter of Qadr from a variety of angles and points of view is connected with discussions concerning the perfect man. The Semantics of the Night of Ordainment In the explanation of how the chapter of the Night of Ordainment attained its name. this chapter was revealed in relation to the Holy Prophet (saw) and his Ahl al-Bayt (as). {thousand} is a complete number and comes into exist with the repetition of other numbers and thus represents entirety. what is meant by the superiority of the Night of Ordainment . it is called the Night of Ordainment. as was indicated and explained in the above verse and narration. it has also been recommended to use this chapter to prove the authority of the Imams (as). Therefore. {month} represents the different types of creation. e.‟ Now.g. In conclusion.Imam Baqir (as) in describing the Holy Prophet‟s (saw) thankfulness performed during prayer. many differing opinions can be mentioned. there exists in the Night of Ordainment special conditions and circumstances for the performance of prayers and supplications and thus it was named as such. Although what has been said about the Holy Prophet‟s (saw) worship is far from its reality. needs to be analysed from two angles: firstly the meaning of the Night of Ordainment needs to be clarified before we can reach an understanding." the Night of Ordainment" was described as "the honoured night" because it was the night of the meeting of the Sealing Prophet. he writes:‟ Consequently. be it from the aspect of love or thanks. he used this form of worship to manifest the essence of the gratitude of his heart upon the parts of his body. the misery of the Holy Prophet (saw) during his worship was a symbol of the thankfulness and praise giving that he presented to his Lord. In this way. as stated in a previous narration. the decrees of the year are ordained and regulated and presented to the perfect man. In addition. has said: „Ayesha… said: “O Prophet of Allah! Why do you put yourself under so much stress whilst Allah‟s forgiveness is for you…?” The Holy Prophet (saw) replied: “O Ayesha! Should I not be a thankful servant?” Imam Baqir (as) then said: „The Holy Prophet (saw) then stood on his toes till Allah revealed to him.

the reality of the Night of Ordainment is that it was the first and is most perfected existential reality that has been designed. the complete Muhammadan (saw) mirror.‟ whereas „Days‟ represents the moment in the stage of the arch of ascension when the sun reveals its true self. because of this the levels of descent of the existential reality has been elucidated as „Nights. Is this anything other than the Muhammadan reality? . are the epitome of this reality. manifested and covered with the Greatest Name of Allah and shines upon all His other creations.e. the Holy Prophet (saw) is better and superior over all created existents. he explains it as such: „Another possibility occurs to the writer. Thus.e.e. it can be said that the Night of Ordainment is that specific existential design and its greatest stage in which the Unity of Allah. Within a lengthy discussion. too. as Allah. it must be said that every creation possesses a celestial aspect and every apparent has a hidden reality. similarly. the Holy Prophet (saw) and the Imams (as). this especially hidden name is known to nobody except to the sacred essence of the Final Messenger (saw). In further explaining this matter.over a thousand nights. and the Night of Ordainment of the Muhammadan constitution is also a hidden name. For example. Hence. From a mystical perspective. that is. the Night of Ordainment in the view of the mystics is the existential reality of the perfect man i. The mystics are of the opinion that existence according to its stages of descent contains levels and designs. and" a thousand months" may be the manifestations of the other Names. the reality of the sun that exists on the horizon are those hidden and covered designs whilst those designs in actuality are differing manifestations and levels of that reality. the perfect man i.e. Conclusively. And. is manifested. the Greatest Name. the Night of Ordainment is hidden. the Exalted. i. Ayatollah Khomeini provides his take on this topic. and as one Name is especially hidden in the unseen world.‟ Thus. will be that the existence of the perfect man i. the Night of Ordainment may be a hint at the manifestation of the Greatest Name.. the Holy Prophet (saw) and the Imams (as). has a thousand and one Names.
