But it always rains in Spa, right? Except, not this time. Dry races meant the teams had to find the best tyre strategy to shine as bright as the sun on track.

Marcus Ericsson is quickly becoming a force to reckon with this season. The mighty Swede is making it a habit appearing on the feature race podium.

The five-way race to the GP2 crown went up a notch again last weekend in SpaFrancorchamps after Sam Bird and James Calado both closed the gap to Stefano Coletti, Felipe Nasr and Fabio Leimer. The five men are now just twenty-four points apart with Series leader Coletti having not scored one single point since the Nrburgring Feature Race bringing his total of pointless race to seven the highest of all five title contenders. Both Leimer and Bird have failed to score six times, Calado four times and Nasr only twice. The Brazilians consistency compensates for the fact that he has yet to win a race. Coletti still holds the record of this seasons podium finishes (seven). Calado is second with five rostrums. The other three drivers all register four, but Birds are all wins. The Brit records the most wins this season so far. Leimer, Bird and Coletti have one pole position each, the Swiss recording three front row starts whilst Calados best qualifying result is P2 and Nasrs P3 (five times). There are now six races left in the season, three qualifying chances to nab extra points and glory until it comes down to the wire in Abu Dhabi.

No birthday podium for Felipe Nasr who turned 21 last week but a blazing Sprint Race saw him fight his way back from P26 to P8.

Julin Leal enjoyed a maiden GP2 podium on Sunday with a strong second place. He crossed the finish line a mere 0.4s behind Calado.

A first pole position and a fourth win in Spa for the talented Brit who is now just fourteen points behind Coletti in the drivers standings. Can he repeat his good form in Italy in two weeks and snatch the lead from the Monegasque driver?

Work remix
While most of us were shamelessly lying on a beach somewhere working on our summer tan, the GP2 drivers chose to keep the pressure on and work on their physical form instead to be ready for the challenge that is Spa. Thats what Alexander Rossi and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs did notably joining a training camp organised by Pro Performance at Bisham Abbey at the English Institute of Sport where the national Olympics teams train. I would have rather enjoyed some beach time back home, but it was quite good to train in such a facility, said Alexander. It was cool because you can train with other drivers otherwise its a very individual thing. You get to be very competitive with each other which made the training more interesting. Sports Performance consultant Andy Wellfare who follows Alexander at the track during the season was one of the trainers at that camp: It was four full days of training with also different workshops on nutrition and psychology. Its easy to go away for four weeks and lose that little bit of a competitive edge. Having all the drivers together, they really competed against

Hes been working towards this first win all season. The ART ace was all smiles on Sundays podium enjoying his success. He is now within reaching distance of the lead of the Series. Never give up is his motto.

each other. They kept that little bit of edge about them.
Alexander added: On top of our regular gym training, we had group sport activities like football or tennis. That part was nice because its surprising the amount of training you get without realising it because youre having fun. Our days ran from 8am till 6pm. Thats intense. It kind of shocks your body and your system to go into a place where youre completely focused on bettering yourself. Id say you get a spike out of that. Andy concluded: We did a lot of grip strength work, leg strength work, and some exercises for the neck obviously. Whenever they come to the gym, we have specific machines to work on. But this time, we tried to make the training as general as possible. As much we want to keep things driver-related, we also appreciate that they do need to have a break so we try to give them that rest from driving whilst still doing driver-related training if that makes sense. But you know, some of the seasons toughest races are coming up: you cannot let the drivers lose their good form!

It had been a while since we last saw the American on a podium. A strong qualifying and a daring tyre strategy meant Rossi enjoyed some well-earned champagne on Saturday with a third place.

ALEXANDER ROSSI

Oh! Rouge
Eau Rouge. You hear about it. You see it on TV, but you dont know what it feels like from a speeding car. Its quite an amazing feeling, said Stefano Coletti. When you arrive down the straight and you have to go up that hill, theres a lot of G force and a lot of compression. It produces a feeling in the car you dont have anywhere else. It squishes you against the seat! Felipe Nasr agreed: Its a unique place. You cannot know what to expect until you go over it for the first time. Sam Bird confirmed: For sure its the most roller-coaster ride corner on the calendar. The fact the approach is downhill you can see it looming large in your face. Youre coming towards this massive rise with a corner in the middle of it and you know youre going to take it flat out. Once youre used to it, its an easy flat out but still the first time of the weekend you do it flat out theres a bit of a Woah factor. Felipe added: You have to take it flat-out to make time because after it you have such a long straight and you can make a lot of time if youre a little bit braver than the others. But you dont see much! Up to halfway you dont know where youre going to end. Its when youre at the top that you see where you land. A shared feeling by Stefano: You just do it blind. When you turn and arrive at the top, you dont see anything. You dont know what to expect, especially in the wet. You just look at the trees to see where youre going. Sam concluded: There are no reference points because you cant see through the corner. You just have to trust your judgement and placing of the car. If you lose the car there its very hard to correct it. You have to pay respect to this corner because it can bite. And when it bites, it really bites!

No matter how badly his knee hurt all weekend, the young Brit had a field day slicing his way up through the traffic on Saturday and up to third place on Sunday. A better qualifying in Monza could mean even bigger points in Italy for the Hilmer man.

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS 2011

Grosjean crowned champion in Spa

Romain Grosjean arrived at SpaFrancorchamps with a commanding 25 point lead in the championship over Giedo van der Garde, but if he was taking the title for granted he hid it well, telling anyone who asked that nothing was done, and all he was concentrating on was going for pole, having only one in his CV so far in the season.

HAMILTON on the podium in SPA

If Lewis Hamilton was unhappy with his car at SpaFrancorchamps, you couldnt tell from his appearance on Saturday: being the last man across the drying line in a rain affected qualifying session helped, but pole position against the odds was reason enough to be cheerful. Sunday showed that the pace wasnt there to fight Vettel or Alonso, so a podium was the most he could achieve: against that teammate Nico Rosberg was the first man to show what could happen in qualy, albeit he was too far up the road and had to make do with P4, a position he held well in the race despite pressure for most of the race from Webber. Sergio Prez had a similar problem: being on track too soon meant he wasnt able to escape Q2 and had to make do with a P13 start, and his fightback in the race saw a misjudgement overtaking Romain Grosjean penalised by a drive through, finishing just outside the points in 11th as a result. The Frenchman, however, had another strong weekend: out qualified his WC teammate for P7, survived Prezs attentions, and struggled through a tough one stop strategy to finish 8th. The Sauber pair had an up and down time at the hilly track: Nico Hlkenberg looked on for a strong performance after qualifying P11 and moving up at the start, but was soon struggling for rear grip, dropping back to 13th by the end of the race. Esteban Gutirrez was on track too early in Q1 and therefore missed his window in the changing conditions: but for that, P21 would have been far higher. The Mexican was much quicker than his teammate throughout the race, but a penalty for exceeding track limits while fighting with Pastor Maldonado dropped him back to P14. The Venezuelan was fighting his car all weekend, as was teammate Valtteri Bottas, with neither driver able to escape Q1 for P17 and P20 respectively. Maldonados race wasnt much better, after a scrappy dice with Gutirrez and a collision with di Resta at the pit entrance, while Bottas struggled to hang on to the back of the midfield: the pair finished P17 and P15. Giedo van der Garde had probably his best race in F1 to date after making a brave call for slicks in Q1 meant he finished the session in P3, and ultimately qualified in a best ever P14 spot. In the race he fought hard to hang in early on, but ultimately drove a strong race to easily win the Caterham/Marussia battle, and even picked up the scalp of Maldonado as a bonus. Against this, teammate Charles Pic had a weekend to forget: wrong place at the wrong time after being caught on the weighbridge in qualifying to finish the session in P22, he at least overtook both Marussias before retiring with an oil leak. Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton also escaped Q1 for P15 and 16, but fell backwards in the race to finish P18 and 19 respectively.

The Frenchman started the weekend well, claiming the top spot in free practice just before the rain came down halfway through on it tightened at the start when van der Garde was pushed wide at the first corner, spinning and clipping the barriers as he fell to the back of the field, while up front Grosjeans usual strong start saw him head to Eau Rouge in P3. Another downpour hit mid-race, and an extended safety car period after a number of resultant accidents had his heart rate up, which was pushed further into the red by challenges from Marcus Ericsson and Luca Filippi when the race restarted, but it only served to make the result sweeter: Grosjean finished third, behind Vietoris and Jules Bianchi, to write himself into the history books as the 2011 GP2 champion.

the session, but with the rain continuing in qualifying Grosjean struggled to get a clear lap as the track improved later in the session, finishing 8th behind poleman Christian Vietoris, which improved one spot when Charles Pic was pushed to the back after running out of fuel. Grosjean needed to finish two points ahead of van der Garde to claim the title and, with the Dutchman three spots behind him on the grid, it looked like the Frenchman had one hand on the trophy ahead of the feature race. His grip

At Pirelli, competition is known as the ultimate research laboratory and in the GP2 Series there are 11 of them, corresponding to the 11 circuits raced on all over the world. Out of all of them, Spa is one of the most challenging for tyres because of its fast corners and highenergy loads. The compression at Eau Rouge in particular subjects the front tyres to the highest vertical load of the GP2 season. All of Pirellis tyres are put through a series of laboratory tests to assess their performance and strength before taking to the track. There are three types of standard test to check the strength of the tyres in extreme conditions:

to the way that Pirelli prepares tyres for Formula One races. But the design of the GP2 tyres is very specific, as the characteristics are quite different to those of the Formula One tyres. These tyre characteristics all have to be assessed thoroughly in testing and races, so that Pirelli can best respond to the needs of the GP2 drivers. The information Pirelli gathers from these extreme tests is vital for the teams, allowing them to make accurate predictions about how the tyres will behave in all types of usage conditions. Not just that, but Pirelli is also able to provide teams with historical data regarding average temperatures, pressures, tyre wear, tyre life and wear profile at every race. The teams are then able to compare averages with data taken from their own cars, and this is very useful when it comes to properly setting up the car and finding the best strategies for individual races.

First of all, high speeds: the tyres are driven on a rolling road at speeds of up to 400kph far quicker than anything that would happen in real life, even at Spa. Vertical loading is checked too: not only are vertical loads of up to 1000 kilograms placed on the tyre, but the tyre is also fired at high speed into solid objects to simulate impacts with kerbs. Finally, camber angles are checked up to values that far exceed any normal usage parameters. There are other tests to simulate the behaviour of the GP2 tyre while cornering. In order to achieve this the tyre is steered by a machine at high slip angles. So every base is covered, similar

Calados back in the game

GP3 is truly a global Series. Over the past three and half seasons weve had 35 different nationalities represented by the drivers with Great Britain as the most successful nation. The Brits have scored eight wins since the inception of GP3, Finland have six, Mexico and Switzerland are joint on five whilst Canada, USA, New Zealand and Portugal have four, Indonesia and France have 3, with Cyprus and Germany on two apiece. 13 teams have competed in GP3, covered by 10 different countries with France topping the victories on 21, Great Britain have 12, Australia 9, Canada 8, Switzerland 6 and Finland 2. During the 2013 season, 28 drivers from 16nations have raced in GP3, with 8 different nationalities victorious from 12races: Cyprus, Finland, USA, Romania, Great Britain, Italy, Argentina and Russia. 2011 GP3 Vice-Champion James Calado got his title hopes back on track after converting reverse pole into a commanding victory in the GP2 Sprint Race. The Brit lies just 24 points behind Series leader Stefano Coletti, another former GP3 ace. There were also podium finishes for GP3 graduates Alexander Rossi and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs. The Monegasque driver failed to score in Spa despite a brilliant comeback drive in the Feature and he will be keen to protect his championship advantage with three GP2 rounds remaining. It was a tough weekend for reigning GP3 Champion Mitch Evans, after qualifying mid-pack, the Kiwi finished just outside the points in both races. Daniel Abt also failed to score after a difficult qualifying session saw him start from P24. F1 Qualifying didnt exactly go to plan for Valtteri Bottas (2011 GP3 title winner) and Esteban Gutirrez (GP3s inaugural Champion). The duo were both caught out by the changing weather conditions and failed to make the cut for Q2, starting 20th and 21st respectively. Despite a drive-through penalty, the Mexican came home in 14th place for Sauber, one place ahead of the Williams ofBottas.

A difficult qualifying session left the Koiranen GP ace failing to score in Spa. The Finn was given a five place grid penalty for Monza after an incident with Sa Silva but he will be looking to claw his way back into the title chase.

Aaro Vainio

The Brit was running in a strong fourth place in Race 1, but he made contact with Carlos Sainz which resulted in a crash and a grid penalty. The ART Grand Prix driver retired in Race 2 but dont rule him out of a title comeback just yet

Adrian Tambay: P27 to P1.

Tambay takes back to front victory

Spa Francorchamps is famous for changeable weather, but 2010s weather was notorious even by the usual standards: the GP3 field saw rain during free practice, qualifying and both races, but none of the downpours threw up quite as much chaos as the one during the sprint race, which turned Adrian Tambays race upside down. The Frenchman, who started the race in P27 after being involved in a multi-car pile up at the first turn in the feature race, had little expectation of a result despite showing his speed by topping the times in a wet free practice, and when the race got underway in dry conditions there was no clue of the surprise to come.

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS 2010

When the rain returned midway through the race Tambay had nothing to lose by staying out on slicks while everyone else pitted, picking up a ten second lead next time round in the process. His rivals, led by Nico Mller, were closing in as the rain eased up, with conditions sitting almost perfectly between slicks and wets as they caught the Frenchman with three laps to go. Mller kept up the pressure but Tambay was equal to the fight, and when Alexander Rossi passed the Swiss driver on the penultimate lap it gave the Frenchman the breathing room to resist: Tambay held on to claim a memorable victory by just 0.4 seconds to the delight of the fans, who applauded the Frenchmans determination as the chequered flag dropped.

LEWIS WILLIAMSON
My helmet design popped into my head after five minutes. I always had a plain helmet as I was too scared to have a design as was worried I would roll the car and crash it. And that actually did happen in Turkey when I had my first helmet paint job. Now I just have the red, white and blue.

MELVILLE McKEE
Ive always been really into my helmet designs so I change it up a bit every year but I keep the colours mainly the same. This year Idid something special as Im half Singaporean so I have used their logo and kept the colours red and white, and added some blue for the UK too. I flashed it up with some sparkles.

Carmen Jord
Ive kept my initials on the side of my helmet but I have changed the colours. One reason for this is because of my sponsor, so I have changed it to orange as in orange fruit. I think the colour is very bright and stands out. I want to do a new helmet design for Abu Dhabi, something more fun with a cartoon theme.
