A FRIEND IN NEED
Fall approaches…that time of year when we find ourselves tiring of the heat, envisioning comfy winter sweaters, mugs of hot tea, cocoa, hearty soups and evenings by the fireside. Yet we know for many of our neighbors, this is not a time of comfort or anticipation. For those among us who haven’t even the most basic of human comforts – a home – this is a time of uncertainty, anxiety, and fear. Here at We Care, as we prepare for our twelfth season sheltering Turlock’s most vulnerable citizens, our friends are in need, and we are painfully aware we cannot do this without you. The We Care Program is proud to be a partner in the local network of homeless services provision, collaborating with other nonprofits, faith-based groups, and city and county agencies assisting those in need. However, public agency funding is declining, and we increasingly find ourselves challenged to build a more diverse funding portfolio. We are stepping up outreach and fundraising efforts, but our most important resource is you! County-wide, there are only enough shelter beds for approximately one-third of those who need them. The homeless men of Turlock, benefactors of your continued generosity, have nowhere else to go. The We Care Emergency Cold Weather Shelter provides programs and services that meet the core needs of Turlock’s homeless adult men. More than 50,000 shelter beds have been provided since 2003. Last season, 184 unduplicated men were served at the We Care Shelter, for a total of 6,229 shelter beds and over 7,000 hot meals provided. Shelter guests also have access to counseling services, provided by a licensed professional, employment, resume skills and job searches, computer lab, drug and alcohol cessation classes, notary public services, bus passes to essential services, and assistance with obtaining vital documents such as Social Security cards and birth certificates. In addition, our case management-based supportive housing and homelessness prevention programs assist individuals and families by ending or preventing their homelessness, depending on their unique circumstances. Last year alone, We Care housing programs assisted more than 100 individuals to gain or maintain their housing. These important services are making a difference in our community, and your support is vital to our efforts to maintain the quality and efficiency of service we have provided over the past ten years. Currently, the We Care Program has enough funding to operate the Emergency Cold Weather Shelter for only two of the five projected months for the coming season. We need your help! We recognize and appreciate the difference you are making in our community, and know our program successes are made possible by your continued generosity. Won’t you please consider donating today?
